Hi all, this insurance saga continues. Went to Shannons yesterday to pay the policy typed up for my van 3 months ago, seems the person who ok'd the policy has resigned and so the policy is no longer an option. The gentleman I spoke to said they only insure teardrops that are put on display and towed by hotrods, camping voids the policy. Looking thru this thread GIO seemed to be an alternative so rang them. After a long waiting period they informed me 1981 was their cut off for vintage vans, they offered me the insurance ombudsman number, gonna try that tomorrow. Other companies have been mentioned in this thread but has anyone had a claim for vintage caravan damage approved? or is everyone paying a premium on a policy that is useless? Dave

G'day Dave01, This issue must just about qualify as the longest running and most confusing on the forum! I must say your post has made me feel a little nervous. Our van is insured with GIO, and they know it's a 1949 model - it says so on the insurance renewal, and it was discussed at some length (and in quite positive terms) when the policy was set up... But perhaps now they just think it's got a 1949cc motor? ;D ;D ;D Seriously though, maybe there's just been a change in GIO's policy. We recently had to find a new insurer for our house because the company we'd been insured by for 30+ years changed their policy and we no longer fitted their criteria. I appealed on the basis of loyalty - our loyalty should result in their loyalty, but to no avail. I can imagine that in ten years time we will still be discussing problems with arranging insurance for V V's, but I sincerely hope not! Don Ricardo

Hi Dave,
Just like Don Ricardo, both my vans (1954 & 1968) are insured with GIO and I when I first insured the 1954 with them (4 years ago), I was able to name a higher amount than their standard pricing for insurance for the van, the annex and the contents, I just needed to send them a list of all the items and their replacement value in order for that to happen.
Each year I check with all the other companies and I always end up staying with GIO as I have found them to be the cheapest and easiest to deal with.
Good luck Di

I rang around a while ago and went back with CIL. The age wasn't a problem and they were very well priced and helpful . My cars and house are with Shannons but I'll be staying with CIL for the van. Rollydog

We rang CIL originally for Lucy, "no problems, send photos". The guy we used for transport had insurance so that wasn't a problem. When we finally got the van and sent photo's, CIL refused insurance as it was sign written. No amount of assurance on my part that she was sound made any difference. I had rung RACV previously and the guy was very confusing but as the van had been insured with the NRMA I tried them. Seems the same company provides the insurance for NRMA, RACV etc. This time all was very easy and cheaper than CIL. Go figure.

Hi All
Looks like same crap different day storey again. Seems to happen regularly.
I just rang Shannons again, to check the validity of my insurance policy. In clear print it states "1956 caravan custom deejay 19 foot", & the comprehensive value. As useage it shows " private use" & " extreme limited use".
I asked what "extreme limited use " was, & was told up to 3 weekends a month, & that the van couldn't be used for permanent living in a caravan park.
I questioned what would happen if I was partway through a longer trip, & was told that as long as it averaged out the same overall useage, there would be no problems.
So I guess 6 days a month equals 72 days a year, or 2 months. No records have to be kept, or asked for that I know of.
I was also told that there is a limit of $500 cover on removeable items only. My annex is specified as part of the van on this policy because I asked them to originally.
Same things I was told months ago when this topic was raised on the Forum previously.
I dont know why some people have so much trouble with insurance. I guess some dont like to deal with Shannons. Thats fine with me, but no company can please everyone.
I'm staying where I am. I've had many years with them, they have paid for several damage repairs to my hot rod over the years, always easy to get on with, & checked on my satisfaction afterwoods.
I guess "to each his own" is an appropriate saying in this instance.

Hi All Hopefully, this will be the last word on whether or not Shannon's will insure a vintage caravan. I just phoned Shannon's and was told that they won't insure a vintage van if it is used for general camping purposes. PLEASE READ ON I rang back a few minutes later and spoke to another rep who was only too happy to insure the vans. Our Roadmaster is now covered for $10,000 for a cost of $136.89 and a second van is covered for $4,000 for a cost of $75.73. The insurance has all the same advantages of Classic Car Insurance, ie. choice of repairer, salvage rights etc. An added bonus was that the additional policies meant that the insurance cost for the Lincoln has been reduced. The rep also told me that it didn't matter whether the vans were on full registration or historic registration, used for regular camping or only at shows, Shannon's would be happy to cover them either way, although historic registration allows them to reduce the policy cost. He mentioned that if any of our members contact Shannon's for a quote and are told Shannon's could not insure them (and they are then directed to their sister company, CIL), they should ask to speak to a SHANNON'S TEAM LEADER, who will be aware that Shannon's are prepared to insure vintage caravans and will process your inquiry. He stated that vintage caravans fall directly into their insurance category and will always be acceptable for cover. I hope this clears up a few uncertainties and I encourage all members to give Shannon's an opportunity to offer cover on their vintage caravans. Why not give them a call - 13 46 46 Geoff 'n Jude

GEE !! GOLLY!! hi again all
when i spoke with shannons this morning, i didn't ask about travelling around australia, nor did i ask whether i must have a car insured with them, because it doesn't come into my equation.
what i did do, is find that shannons will definitely insure your vintage caravan under the same conditions they insure your classic car, if you ask them to.
i suggest that any specific inquiries be put to them at the time you seek your quote.

Hi All
I am sure it varies depending on how you want to use your van - we have a policy that lets us take it anywhere and use it basically every weekend of the year (equaling a total number of days / percent of the year).
There were other options, but for our purposes, that was just fine. There were no restrictions about if you used all the days at once, how far you went, or were only going to van shows (like some limited liability schemes).
Choice of repairer, salvage, etc.
Perfect, Seeshell

Well I have opened a can of worms trying to get my bondwood insured: I will list the excess, what is covered & cost to help others - sum insured is $6000
GIO - will not insure over 1975 vintage
Shannons: classic - will not cover any contents. Agreed value excess $500, quote $117.27
NRMA: V&V - will not cover any contents. Asked to check, then they said $350 contents with $300 excess <9000km pa excess $300, quote $103.95. Agreed value, salvage rights, accidental damage, hail extra excess.
Ken Tame - CMCA insurer - not a motorhome, slideon or 5th wheeler - won't insure
MHIA - I have dealt with in the past with my unregistered caravan/on site cabin - very expensive
CIL - touring insurance only $1000 contents + extra $1000 $18.05), excess $200, quote $220.40, excess $600, quote $203.94. Agreed value, salvage rights, accidental damage, hail damage.
QBE - won't insure caravans over 10 years of age.
HOME CONTENTS INSURANCE - portable, transit, valuables, miscellaneous; the name varies with each company. Eg QBE Option 2 $500/item, $3000/claim $125.80pa, Option 4 $1000/item, $5000/claim $187.77pa. This is the better option for the caravan contents as it can be used outside the home Australia & NZ wide (can be world wide with extra premium).
What a pain! Going with the extra QBE valuables & NRMA VC at $103.95. Sue

Hi Guys, I recently tried to get insurance on my 1958 Kennedy van and after a very long phone call was informed by Shannon's that, as I was towing the caravan with a modern vehicle I did not qualify as a "vehicle enthusiast" (ONLY a caravan enthusiast!!!!!) and they would not be able to insure me, I requested that a manager contact me, but unfortunately that never happened???. So after feeling a bit disillusioned I hesitantly phoned CIL Insurance who, quite honestly could not have been any more helpful, they were easy to talk to, insured the van, contents and annexe and did not discriminate because the van is vintage. hope this helps

I'm with CIL - they do agreed value. But just got my renewal last week, and looked and they have lowered the agreed value by $600 - the premium went down $11, but that's not the point, as in general, when kept well maintained, vintage vans go up in value not down, don't they? Will be ringing them before we renew.

I approached Shannons to insure my renovated 69 vintage caravan but since I was not a vintage car enthusiast or collector they didn't want to know me. What happens to us c/van enthusiasts only???

Hmm! How odd. Mine is insured with Shannons - and we don't have a car or anything else with them. Usually they try to determine if you are an enthusiast by asking if you have more than one van, which meets the test. Alternatively, being part of an enthusiasts group is also a factor, so it might pay to tell them you are part of a Vintage Van enthusiast group who meet and have runs regularly (which does happen). That might get you over the line - alternatively ask to speak with a manager about it, they'll know more than the work experience kid on the phone! Cheers Seeshell

We too have now started the insurance merry go round and today we received the same "not a motor vehicle enthusiast" because we will be towing the van with ordinary modern vehicles. We phoned the company who insures our cars APIA but they wont insure a van older than 30 years. The person on the phone referred us to CIL who were very helpful, however, we had to send photo's, we'll have to get a certificate for the electrics and it has to be registered. Once we get all that sorted I expect we'll end up going with them Of course to do all these things we have temporary permits to move it around as required but NO insurance. Does anyone know if you can get the equivalent of 3rd party property like you can with cars?

That $600 could be depreciation for your annex. (If you have one)
Call them and ask.

Hi Everyone, I had to deal with some insurance companies today, to get a policy on my newly acquired 16ft Olympic Fibreglass Riviera (think it's a 70-72 model). Okay I tried CIL as my cover with my 14ft Olympic Fibreglass Debonair (1969 model) was taken out with them, I had no problem with them at that time I took out the policy, however the Debonair was bought in pretty mint condition, I had to provide photos to them though of the caravan before they would insure the van. Link to Debonair pics vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&thread=10863Okay, not the story today, I sent them pictures of the van that I'm picking up next week in Qld, I need to get an insurance cover to supply this to get the temporary permit with Qld roads transport authority. CIL um'd and ar'd, they didn't like the pics of the van cause the body wasn't clean and also one side of the van wasn't showing in the pics, they wanted me to clean the van and resend them photos, I explained the situation but they were very unhelpful. Link to Riviera pics vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&thread=11768I then rang their sister company, Shannons, however Shannon's didn't want to to cover me for the caravan as I wasn't a vintage car / bike owner, nor did I have a participation in vintage cars / events or that I hadn't owned a vintage car before, they referred me back to their sister company, CIL......had enough at this point, so I decided to contact GIO as I'd seen someone else had cover with them on this forum topic. GIO was so helpful and no problems at all, the didn't need pics, just had to answer their questions honestly and give them all the information relevant to the caravan....I got the insurance cover for the caravan and it's also cheaper than CIL's policy by $32.45 and I have coverage of contents for $2800 for the same agreed value as my Debonair policy with CIL and that has less contents insurance. So it pays to go to GIO peoples, not CIL....I rang CIL to let them know that they have loss my business and that if that's how there going to do business there going to lose people as why would you wnat to have to jump thru that many hoops with them when you can get great customer service with GIO with less hassles. When i get back next week from pickin up my new (sounds funny saying new when it's a vintage, you know what I mean lol) I'm going to cancel my CIL policy and go with GIO. Hope this is helpful to anyone else wanting to get insurance. Cheers Tory (Torrich)

Don't cancel until GIO confirm they will insure it When I was bringing Winterwood home (yes, I know it's a bit remiss of me to be arranging insurance when I am towing the van), GIO, who I have many policies with, wouldn't cover it. Possibly pre 1970 they won't do? I rang Shannons, & as hubby had had (many years ago though) a car with them, they insured it no problem. It appears you get conflicting advice depending on who you get on the other end of the phone. Maybe you will have to buy a vintage car ;D

It appears you get conflicting advice depending on who you get on the other end of the phone. G'day Shesgotthelook, Never a truer word said I reckon, and the truth of it is borne out every time the issue of caravan insurance comes up. A few years ago (2008?) the company that had insured our van for 20+ years changed their policy and refused to insure a van that was built before 1980 - which well and truly ruled out our van, by 30 years or so. I approached Shannon's who told me they wouldn't insure our van under any circumstances, even though we had a car (though not the tow vehicle) insured with them. I then tried GIO who couldn't have been more helpful. They wanted a lot of details, which was fair enough, but didn't ask for photos. The fact that the van was close to 60 years old at that stage wasn't an issue. So since then we've had the van with GIO. But you had the opposite response from each of the above. As a bunch of V V'ers our natural tendency is to look for an insurer that will take a consistent approach to our beloved vans, but I've come to the conclusion that that insurer doesn't exist. My take on it is that you try all the insurers and when you find one that is willing to cover your van for the way and frequency you use it, insure with them and don't worry about the rest. I can't recall anyone on the forum who hasn't been able to find some one to insure with eventually. As long as that remains the case we're probably OK. Don Ricardo
