Thanks guys, we were all supposed to be on our best behaviour but I think someone forgot to tell some of those boys in the 'stangs - some got a bit cheeky shoving it up the inside - they obviously don't know about the huge blind spot on a humpy ute running a 4" peep mirror!! ;D ;D Had a ball though not too often you get to have a play around Lakeside.

After the "fail to proceed" on the way to Millmeran, we've been doing a bit of work on the "phantom" and discovered the main reason it wasn't selecting gears ..... Yep, thats the auto selector cable and its melted the outer sheath. Stilll changed the box (thanks John and Di) as the one in it has obviously been well overheated. Also changed the thermo fan for a SPAL 16" job as well as repositioned the trans cooler and new selector cable. Just leaves changing over the distributor as the old points one seems pretty worn and may not be advancing properly - have a pointless one to put in. So the phantom will hopefully make an appearance at Crows Nest with van in tow!!! Oh great, that means its got to pull up the range again Cheers Doug and Tracy By the way, the supposed auto trans specialist in Toowoomba reckoned that someone had cut the kick down cable - it doesn't have one its the modulator type! They also reckoned the selector assembly was loose inside - that problem was the cable above ... and it was visible with the gearbox in the car (but was hard to see). So they wanted $1100 to overhaul the box .... all I can say is beware of "tradesmen" when you are on the road; seems that if you are stuck it is taken as an opportunity to sting you. I have been told that (from the description of what happened and what we found) that it is likely the auto would have kept going after it cooled down with a change of oil and filter! Obviously, changing gears would have been a problem but the $1100 overhaul wouldn't have even included the new selector cable (that cost over $200, so who knows what that would have ended up costing through the Toowoomba mob).

Hi Doug,
Over the years I've had cable shifted auto's in several cars, & have had a few failures in the cable housing/sheating. It was worse when the cable was looped around in a circle to fit it.
I ended up getting rid of the B&M type cable operated shifters, & fitted mechanical linkage types, like the old HK-T-G Holden on our EH's, & modified a Cortina one to fit the C10 in my rod.
Problem never occured again.

Thanks for that Dennis if it lets me down again it will be binned! We have spent a fair bit of time trying to make sure it is away from heat and snags so we will see how we go - its all ready in so not ready to go for mechanical linkages unless it gives out again ... Started it up last night and the thermo cut in and out in a minute or two - pretty good but will just have to wait and see how it goes when the ambient temp is up.

Well we have been addressing a few issues with the ute when towing the van ... New thermo fan: Its a 16" SPAL pumps heaps of air, had to do a bit of "adjustment" to the grille support bar to fit it in .... Remounted the transmission cooler so it will catch the breeze a tad better (it was mounted horizontally and above the stone tray) And have also opted for a lower ratio diff than the 2.78 to 1, now 3.55 to one So, after a test run this weekend hopefully will be ready to tackle the range for Crows Nest!!! Oh and also have binned the old points distributor for an electronic one ... the old one seemed to have a bit of stiffness in the advance plate so may not have been advancing the timing properly. GO THE PHANTOM!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Cheers, Doug and Tracy

Haven't had much of a chance to drive the ute without the van on John but it seems to have a little more poke off the line!! ;D ;D ;D Its revving a bit harder at 100km/h obviously but not bothering me as I think it actually sits in the efficient range of the cam better. Did you catch that reference to "with the van on" ?? Yes, the ute has made it from point A to point B, towing the van, and back WITHOUT the involvment of a tilt tray or trailer!!!! And I have witnesses .... Only problem on the trip was the hubcap falling off .... Stopped to look for it on the side of the road, searched for a hundred metres or so up the road ... hmmm should have found it by now, the grass was only short . Go back toward where we came from, still no sign .... Thought, I'd better check the bus stop out but it wouldn't have got in there, would it??? Yep, there it was, chillin', just waitin' for the bus .... Anyway, its good to finally get a trip under the belt with no dramas!

Onay Doug.. Good to see pesistence paying off. If the 3;55 proves to be a bit low you could sneak up to a 3;36 . I use one in the FB van with 186 and old 3 speed... happy all day everyday with van on at 100KPH/3000RPM ... 14"wheels. It hangs on a bit better on hills with 13"wheels Hope everything holds together now on the phantom ... vanning season ( warmer weather ) is fast approaching. Regards Reddo

Well that was an expensive way to find a simple fault. Probably what cooked the other trans. You must be getting a lot of frequent flyer points with the towies by now !

Well seems I may have counted a few chickens .....
Just got back from the auto specialists and while they say that the crush on the cooler wouldn't be helping cooling wise, its not likely to be bad enough to allow enough pressure in the line to blow the pump seal out of it ...
So back to not really having a definitive solution as to why this is happening :x :x
Cheers Doug.

Well I might be on to something ( again) this time! I took the locator down to my friendly auto specialist and he pointed out it has been ground down! When I checked it for play, I pushed it all the way on to the convertor (as you would) and there wasn't a lot of play there, but when you pull it back a bit to where it would sit with the bit ground off, there is quite a bit of play! Awaiting word from the "guru" at the workshop for his opinion of if this is the problem.... Cheers Doug

The Phantom strikes again. That was a perfectly good trans when it was in Diannes ute. LOL Had to be something weird like what you just found to cause the on-going dramas. Hope this is the end of it.

You and me both I am definately over it - if it goes again there may be a cheap ute on the market! The box is still good - when it has trans fluid in it!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well today was test day since we are heading to Evans Head tomorrow, so I figured I'd rather mess about with the ute if its going to break today rather than on our holidays!! Soooo ... Hooked up the van and headed for the nearest decent hill, that being Maleny, and the ute performed admirably, temp on around 90 degrees indicated most of the way, sneaking up and nudging 100 on the steepest part of the climb. I have put some of that water wetter in this time and I reckon its probably running a little cooler but it seems to me to be recovering when it gets a little hotter going up the hills a bit quicker. It made it up no probs ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D So onwards and downwards I went, I decided to head out to Kenilworth, for those that don't know the area, this road goes back down the range and twists and turns with a few short sharp hills, stopped and had a bite to eat opposite the excellent cheese factory After lunch headed back up the range again to Maleny and then Mapletown, which runs along the ridge line and has heaps of up and down, slow hauls up the hill etc. Topped up the tank at Mapletown, and for 137km of up and down dale it used 27.5 litres, that’s around 20 litres per hundred or 15 mpg for you oldies. About twice its normal rate if I am just driving normally - I reckon this must be about right as the Commodore near doubles its consumption too when towing the van. I don't really care how much fuel it uses, I am just keen to have a good handle on the range of the tank - at that rate its around 150 - 200 km since its the standard 45 litre tank, don't think I'll be driving past too many servos aye!!! So from Mapleton headed back down the range and onto the highway for a good decent run at highway speed - I pushed it along at 100km/h to see what sort of temp it would run at, and it actually runs hotter at around 95 indicated - just goes to show how hard the car has to work to push along through that air. Fuel consumption confirmed just how hard it was working, the last 77 km used 15 litres, thats around 19.5 litres per 100 km, near enough the same as working up and down the hills. Practically speaking a more realistic cruising speed will be more like 90km/h as the van gets to swaying very easily at 100km/h, just coming into an open area or having a truck overtake gets it to start swaying and feeling uncomfortable, this is much reduced at 90. I might look in to sway bars but realistically, the goat tracks we call highways just dont normally have the conditions to travel safely at 100km/h with the van on anyway, and when it is safe to do it more often than not it will be on a multi lane road anyway so sitting at 90 doesn't hold anyone up. So, the ute made it back home no probs and is now all packed and ready to go on holidays tomorrow!! Roads must have been a bit rough as this doesn't normally happen - its only light rubbing though so not too concerned. Hopefully I haven't jinxed myself with this post Cheers, catch you all in a week or so Doug.
