Hallo everyone.Firstly this is a fantastic site.I'm new to this vintage vanning but thanks to Ray (Roehm 3108) telling me about the Propert in Tassie i got bit by the bug and am buying a teardrop from Yamba which appeared here. It should go quite nicely behind my 46 Austin as it is reasonably light and shouldnt strain the Austins gradual braking system. regards don

Gidday Big Didda I saw your post and a teardrop and the 46 austin reminds me of me my teardrop was built in 1952 By a commercial Caravan builder In carlyle Western australia reputed and confirmed by the former Curator of W.As Whiteman Park motor Museum as being built from a DC3 aircraft and the first known Aluminium van in Western Australia and possibly Australia as far as they have researched Welcome to the site and hoping to see a posting of your Austin and Van Regards Will

G'day Don and welcome to the site. Good to see another vanner getting into the vintage van scene. The fact that you are on the east coast ( i think) is a bonus. The sandgropers over in W.A seem to have us out numbered. Jaillbarjuice is up Yamba way ... well Alstonville/Ballina. "Gradual Braking System" a common feature on old english cars. I learnt to drive in dads Austin A40 countryman van then progressed to a A55 cambridge. Fortunately i had saved enough money to buy a HR Holden panel Van by the time I was eligible for a license. Hey Wil . You never cease to amaze me. How many vans , cars, Hot rods have you got??? Don't forget when you update your will to leave the F100 to your old mate Reddo Reddo - Newcastle

Hi Will "Behind another 99 people eh". We'll see about that. I am on my way over with three rotweillers. The plan is to pack 'em in the van then starve 'em all the way across the Nullabour. On arrival i will "release the hounds" who will then set about gobbling up the "99". Once thier work is done i will leave the dogs behind (By dumping them in W.A it solves all the problems i have with them living next door). Then its just a matter of hitching one of your vans on behind the Black F100 ( wouldn't want to use my van again after three rotties had camped in there for week... PHEW!) and cruizin' on back home..... Too easy. What do you reckon Will .... am I on a winner here or what??? Of course there is the one small issue to resolve . You still being alive..... I am working on that one.... could be a problem ;D . i wander if the rotties could manage 100 Reddo - Fords are great mate!!

Gidday Don I have to be honest when I decided to buy Trevs Tram thats around about 49 to 50 english Caravan with sculptured coach work in aluminium It had to have an english car to tow it so I just purchased Aussie Austin about two weeks ago for that purpose it was totally restored from O to go so I thought it would be a good match for the van fixed and sliding heads man is over my head but I do know this when I turn the key even after two days no pump of the accelerator no choke it starts immediately the only thing that is not original is the carby its of a holden apart from that its the real thing apart from being a good match it is identical just a little bit smaller than 37 chev sedan but the Austin has suicide doors and the chev has conventional doors The braking is a concern so its off to the brake people to see what can be done it is a nice little car and drives extremely well plenty of power and smooth as for a 58 year old car Im looking forward to finishing of trevs Tram so I can" HIT THE ROAD DON" good to have you on board Don welcome and happy vintage vanning hope to see you next year in Sth Australia ;D best wishes Will

Hi Guys. Man, I can't get enough of those vans.
Will, love the Austin & the teardrop + all of the other toys you seem to haave (Lucky sod ;D). But, I may have to let you down regarding the teardrop being the first "Aluminium Van" built in Australia. The van I am negotiating to buy, was built by the present owners father in 1947 & is box tube steel frame & aluminium sheeted. An amazing thing to behold! He has photos & film of this van & record of it being registered in 1947. It was built by his Dad in South Australia (Name of town eludes me at this time) & when he tried to get it registered, now one knew what to do. It was also the very first caravan to get to Ayers Rock & was towed by a brand spanking Ford (He still has a chunk of Uluru his old man picked up). I haven't seen the photo of the car & he can't remember the model name. I hope to get down there this weekend & will get some photos + maybe some of his original pictures. I will let you know how I go, once I get the photos & the REAL proof.
Man, I love that Austin of yours!!
Regards, Rob J

hey you Austin lovers , I had a 58 lancer a little while back, I made it run good with a 3.4 bored & stroked V6 capri engine, 5 speed Toyota box, Torana LJ diff & front discs, Volvo rear discs, Had heaps of fun in it for a few years. Then realised that you need size to perform. Jailbarjuice Great stuff jailbar While i was learning to drive in the A40 mum traded in her side valve rag top 850 two door morris minor on a series one morris major. Very similar to the lancer with a bit of badge engineering and grille work being the only difference. I was forbidden from even starting it . it had an 1800 MGB motor with twin SU's, extractors and a mild lumpy cam. lowered a few inches with "whopping " 6 inch rims shod with 195 radials. It was years ahead of its time with padded black vinyl dash and door trims, black duco and black shag pile carpet. About 4 smiths gauges set into the dash plus column mounted tacho and full harness seat belt. All this and it still had coathangers for control arms and tobacco tins for brakes. when i finally got my license i was granted a day out in it on my own. End result .... a phone call from three blocks away telling ma and pa i had let the clutch out and the diff "just fell apart". Mind you its the fastest i had ever covered those three blocks. yyyyyyeeeeeehhhhhaaaaa!!! Dad turned up and made me push the car home. every time i stopped pushin he kicked my arse. Lesson learnt. Funny times. Mum is 88 now and is running around in a corrolla. i get her to ring me when she is planning to head out in the car. i make sure i stay out of the way. Wish i knew where the little morrie ended up. Cheers Reddo the lead footed eastener.

Will, Sliding Head means sunroof, fixed head means no sunroof. Send us an email if you need any info on brakes. You'd guess they're mechanical ( rod operated ) so be very careful in traffic. don

Hi don
My brother jeff has a " drop head" tickford MG - 1939 ( i think). from what i can make out drop head refers to a roof that folds back to just behind the driver. the rest of the fabric roof is held in place by landua ( spelling???) bars.
he has always been the british car nut in the family although dad did have a few old "garden variety ' austins and morris cars. I have gone down the two wheeled path.always had a collection of british bikes - Nortons, BSA, AJS and matchless and an Australian made 1924 Waratah.
Boys and thier toys Reddo

Hey Don Just wanting to knows a bit more about your tear drop. Is it the one that was for sale here on the forum a while a go? Would love to see pics of how you are going restoring it. I know that the seller ( if it is) wanted the little beauty to go to someone who would do her justice. Is this the one? Ditzy
