Hi All Back in 2008 on the way to the Vintage Van Nats at Mt Gambier i was ämbushed"at the local servo by a fellow who has a few vans on his property near Portland. I followed him around to his address and looked at his collection. Left my contact details. I contacted him a few weeks back and his now selling a couple of his vans. He posted me these photos. 1st is a "holdfast"which he is asking $1500 for.. Sorry about the quality of the photos i have taken them from the prints Peter sent me. Second is.a "crusader "alloy sides with F/glass roof and ends.. very tidy . New tyres, brakes etc.. asking $3500.. The photos dont do this van justice... its a very tidy van inside single bed either side at rear., kitchen across the front.. no sign of a table ? I am working on pete as he has a third van that interests me..... was gunna sell it to me.. buit since speaking with him and the photos arriving with an accompaining letter .. he has changed his mind... I hope to speak with him again today .. I will ask permission to post his contact details if anyone is interested in purchasing either of these 2 vans. I would like the timber van .. but i am slowing up in my old age and just cant get excited about travelling that far to collect it. Cheers Reddo

Hi folks, Elpea is correct, but here are Reddo's original pics from 2008. No internal shots at that point unfortunately: Hawthorn at Portland Has "Holdfast" near door but almost cert it is a Hawthorn. Also KB3s van that was at Mt Gambier.. "Hawthorn " ?? or is it a "Greythorn" ?? Reddo When Reddo posted the photos he commented that the van looked like a Hawthorn to him. The vans to which he refers were built by Rowvan in South Australia and sold under the name of Hawthorn in Victoria (and a few other names as well, including Playtime). It looks to me as if the 'Holdfast' is South Australian built because of the exposed roof ribs in the ceiling, which was a characteristic of almost all South Australian built caravans from the 30's right through to the 70's and perhaps beyond. (Mark T recently told me that this is known as a 'Tudor ceiling' which makes sense.) However, there are a number of differences between the 'Holdfast' and mid-50's Rowvans, including the curve of the roof, the lack of a porthole window (characteristic of most if not all bondwood Rowvans), the size of the windows, the placement of the door, the placement of the panel joins, the shape of the wheel arch, etc, etc. These make me question if the van is a Rowvan (or a Hawthorn), but I may be quite wrong. What about the name 'Holdfast'? I can't find any reference to Holdfast anywhere in terms of a caravan brand name, but Holdfast Bay is a location near the suburb of Glenelg in Adelaide where there are - and presumably were - a number of caravan parks, even though it's within spitting distance (almost) of Adelaide airport. Three suggestions then: 1. The name Holdfast refers to the Holdfast caravan owner's favourite holiday destination, and this particular caravan was nicknamed Holdfast by its owner. 2. The van was built by someone living around Glenelg who thought Holdfast was a good name for their caravan, and was a little pun on how well it traveled behind the tow car. 3. A manufacturer around the Glenelg area build Holdfast caravans on a commercial basis, and we just haven't come across any other than this one. Maybe Lazza can tell if any of the above is likely... Any thoughts Lazza? Don Ricardo

Hi All I have steered several people on to Peter the owner of these vans. As far as i am aware no - one has purchased either van... Sooooooooooo... Here is Petes contact details... Peter Birch Ph: 03 55232679 Sorry about the delay, But i did promise those people that had pm'd me that i would give them time to approach Pete about his vans. He seems like a nice bloke. So please take your time to ask relevant questions about the vans condition and what needs doing to it ( them) before making a decidson to buy either of them. As i understand it the Holdfast needs a wheel bearing and i would imagine that the roof would need close scrutiny before attempting to tow the van home. It will be a rare older style bearing .. not your average garden variety that you would find at a parts shop.... Ideally you would float it home on a car trailer... so factor that into your costs as well. Good Luck and let us all know how you get on Reddo
