hi y'all i recall awhile ago someone suggested that the members of the vintage caravan mob meet somewhere in the middle of oz for a get together and check each other out , and the vans too. being a hot rodder at heart and the fact that the nationals are being held in the renmark area of south oz next year [ 2006 ] on the anzac day long week end, i got to thinkin, that maybe we could organise something of a cross country cruze from all over oz and meet up at last we could meet at port augusta which is pretty close to half way to anywhere, actually kimba is halfway across oz, but what the hey, is big enough for heaps of vans [ three big parks ] and the roads from wherever all meet there maybe the week end before [ easter ] would be a good time and those of us interested can rock on to the nationals the following week end down the road a bit. if it is going to happen we need to get organised as no doubt the van parks get booked out real early in the piece, especially easter in a place like pt augusta. if anyone is interested lets know and i can start the wheels turning and get sites booked or at least make some inquiries what do you reckon? cheers for now

Input for the thinktank. Port Augusta & Ceduna both have their problems with 'racial tensions' as I recollect from my last trip over that way (2001). Kimba as you mentioned before is a beautiful little town, but nowhere to go to from there. At both the aforementioned large towns It was reccommended to me that I do not leave my car or caravan unattended. Is there someone from that side who can research??? I'm ready to go!! just get a firm date.

I plan to be at Phillip Island (vic) at Easter next year for the FE FC Holden club nationals, so I'll be over that way at this time. I plan to take my FC with "Ditzy" in tow: Mark

I'm up for it... ;D.....but.... From a "locals" point of view though.... There is not a great deal in Pt Augusta.....and I'm sad to say they do have problems that could detract from the fun ...! I generally drive through with little more than a petrol stop......big snapper if you get out on the water..hmmm!? You might remember the Mayors'youth curfew a while back.....not that that will apply to too many of us,,,,,, I've rellies out Kimba way but would not suggest it had much in the way of attractions!! Renmark area could be worth a shot,,,,river towns....wineries...van parks with green grass...and not that much further! Not that the Barossa Valleyis far from there either...world class destination......!!!!!! Ahh beautiful S.A......... baffled by choice!!! ;D

hi y'all
am working on the details and at the moment i've heard of a place called morgan at the top of the claire valley
it's supposed to be pretty good, on the murray river and it's not to far from any wine cellars [ which sounds good to me ]
i was thinking of the three days between easter and the anzac day w/end [ april 18 thro to the 20th ]
that way we west ozzies can travel over on the easter break, make the stop over for the vintage vans, meet all the rest of you poor mad addicted vanners, and then move onto the hot rod nationals in bamera the following w/end
the gp will be in victoria for the fc nationals and he will join us in SA for the van- a- thon and then come with us to the real car nationals. [ i think he should be there as he is the original grand poo bah, global moderator, instigator etc, you get the picture ] and although he's a died in the wool holden man, he's not THAT bad.
if that sounds good enough, give me some feed back and i'll get things moving from this end.
i will need some numbers to book sites etc as the moragn c/park only has 98 powered sites and i would hate to book the place out and not leave room for all you vanners coming from all over oz [ ;D
let's make it happen and let's make it big
see u

Hi Dave,
not sure if it was Gemma that told you about Morgan...but if it wasn't, we were passing through there only a couple of weeks ago on our way back from the FE-FC Nationals and were very impressed by the pretty spot on the river where the caravan park was. There is also a free ferry right on the caravan park entrance to go across the river and head south for the Barossa Valley....a very nice spot we thought.....
There's also an interesting town called Burra about 80 - 90 Km back toward the Flinders that we enjoyed....they have a caravan park on the little river/creek as well but not as big (I think) as Morgan....plus, not as close to wineries.....but worth a visit as you pass through if you get the chance.
We'll be going to Phillip Island at Easter, but not driving old cars across this time....flying to Melb so we won't be joining you at the "Meet in the Middle" this time....
cheers.......Brad

Great run count me in when you confirm dates. I stayed at Burra Caravan park a couple of weeks ago and Burra was a great place to stay in regards to the town the caravan park let it down a little. Morgan is also very pretty. We stayed a Waikerie last weekend and this too is on the river (short walk) and the town has a bit to offer. Other places would be Loxton or Barmera.
Keep me informed as I can ring around for info.

hi ya'll am just piecing it together at the moment morgan sounds like the go on the banks of the mighty murray should be real nice and cosy, laid back for a few tinnies and a bit of bench racing how does this sound? easter friday[ 14/04/06 ] the wa mob leave for south oz, travel to morgan and arrive easter monday arvo [ 17/04/06 and thats not to bad a drive and not to taxing on the vehicles and people either ] we meet form all over oz, kick back and do whatever [ i would suggest doing nothing except having a few coldies and wffling rubbish myself but that's a person thing ]and stay until fri [ 21/04/06 ] then move on to the street rod nationals in bamera, just up the road a bit. that gives us all about 3 days of togethernes the street rod nats are from 21/04/06 through to 25/04/06 for those who are going and those not attending it should give you plenty of time for the trip home as it's a short week then because of anzac day the 25th. for the west ozzies we can take off wed 26th and still be home by sat 29th in plenty of time the wa school holidays are exactly the same days ie frid 14th thro to sun 30th so it works out just dandy for those who wish to attend the street rods you don't have to be a member of the association to come along and it will cost $40 each adult for 5 days entertainment and $20 per night to camp at the grounds where it's all happening. all tucked in and secure [ not bad aye ] for info go to www.bigrivernationals.comso far we have about 5 vans attending from west oz so it will be great to catch up with all our eastern states maniac vintage van cousins if that all sounds fair we will go for it ;D see ya on the street and keep cruzin dave

Hi Loveshack! She who must be ........ has stuck her hand up for this one as soon as she heard "Clare Valley" mentioned. Doubt whether I would have the Chesney anywhere near finished by then, so will probably bring the Propert. Hi everyone,
This sounds like a good run. It is really strange how the old car & van adventures go. We had never been to Canberra before we got old cars, now we have been there several times. Same thing is happening now. I have never been to Adelaide before and we are heading there in September this year via the Great Ocean Road to the Chev Festival and the Bay To Birdwood run. (would love to know if anyone on this forum are going to either event, would like to say hello) now with this "meet in the middle" I'm trying to join you. We also want to do the FE FC Nats in Phillip Island, but we don't tow the van with the FC only the Chev. I wonder if they will object if we turn up in a Chev instead of FC, then travel to "Meet in the middle" All these problems and more will have to be sorted before we can make our decisions. will update when we sort out. Dave, doing a great job here, You can pencil two more (people) in for this trip, actually you can use your biro, I feel sure. It looks like four vans from amongst the team who are going to Coledale in October will also join up with you in Morgan. We will no doubt talk about it at Coledale. Being in a state of retirement, (redundant was the way they put it) I most likely will be away from home for a few weeks, I have yet to work out whether we will “tour” before or after “Morgan”. Looking forward to it. Cobber.

G'Day Wrongsiders You can scratch me down as a "definite maybe" for Morgan . The idea of kicking back for a few days in Morgan without hanging on to a steering wheel sounds great. Overnighters within a few hundred K's of home are not an issue for SWMBO but she doesn't like travelling long distances. Might work on her with the slant that she will be able to enjoy a "reddo free week" if she lets me run away from home on my own. might even do the unthinkable and sell one of my bikes to help finance the trip. keep up the good work Dave and let us know what the sites are worth etc. is there a web site for the C/V Park in Morgan. hope not. Some of the best parks to stay at are the ones that dont advertise. Willing to sacrifice a few stars on the park rating if it means that your not getting snared in ten million tent ropes on the way to the crapper Reddo - have esky - will travel !!!

Info on Morgan Been scratching around on the net and google searched Morgan South Australia. there is a few pictures on the site and all look good to me. Morgan Caravan Park - has a pool . Ph: 088542207 2 pubs in town . The Commercial and the Terminus. Every town has a Commercial hotel!!! Better get em to order a keg of Tooheys Port Morgan Rail Museum Historic walks Carmines Antiques - Might be worth a scrounge around. Landseers Wharehouse - would be a good spot for a photo shoot of the tow cars and vans. There is a good picture of the river and sandy banks. Great place for a swim. and how about this , the real clincher is that in 1830 Morgan was known as "the great bend" or "the great elbow". So if you combine the 2 you get "The Great Bend of the Elbow" Sounds like a great venue, Bending the elbow with stubby attached is great passtime and a perfect name for the run. hi yall have booked 20 sites at morgan for monday 17/04/06 thro to thurs 20/04/06 that seemed to be the number of vintage vanner nutcases who showed interest in the "2006 National Vintage Caravan Great bend of the Elbow Rally - Morgan S.A. " reddo, you are the man , naming the event. It's perfect but....i don't know about that slab of tooheys. last time i tried a tooheys back in coogee or bondi or wherever it was in the 60's, the bloke stood a spoon upright in the middy and eventually the beer ate the thing and it dissapeared somewhere into the glass [ strange brew ] strong stuff that tooheys old, hate to think what it can do for your insides but i've seen what it can do for the outsides. makes the ground uneven and eventually you fall down and go sleepy byes for the night and half of the next day. anyway, the park manager said the numbers where not a problem at the moment but the school holidays are the same time in SA so if left any closer to the dates we may have a problem with booking extra sites if anyone not mentioned on the above list decides to come along i would STRONGLY suggest letting me know and i will keep booking the sites as req'd or book yourself in. ask for peter or brenton on [08] 85402207 and mention the vintage caravan mob and they'll look after you i hate going somewhere and rocking up and the joint is booked out when it would have only cost a phone call and you would be in like flynn the west ozzies attending are going on to the street rod nats up at bamera the following weekend, so am booking 6 sites for that as well. if anyone else is wishing to attend and keep the party going for a few more days of merryment and juice [ if it holds out ,jailbar ] please get on the net at www.bigrivernationals.com remember...you don't have to be a member of the street rod association to come along and enjoy the fun so zip off an entry form and be there. the latest estimate is about 600 cars, so it will be a great turn out. we can show the rest of oz that the vintage caravan scene is up and running and that we can have a hell of a time with our pants on as well any probs...let me know and if anyone decides to pull out PLEASE let me know so i can cancel the sites. the blokes are pretty touchy about that especially during school holls cu ya there if you can see sky...it's to high

hi y'all just a quick note for those attending the street rod nationals next year at bamera [ thats if you carry on from the vintge van nationals/rally, at morgan] if you intend to book, unless you ask to be stuck with the vintage van mob, you will be put in with people from whatever state you come from the organisers are seperating eveyone into state by state groups theory is so at least you will know someone, but i have asked for our mob from the west to be put together :)so if you want to join ,mention it on your entry form or call the guy who's organising accomodation, graham, and the vintage van mob can stick together and rock up a storm or two as air bags, jailbar. i have them on the vicky and they are great for towing. when it comes time to hook up i just raise the back end up to the tow hitch and away i go. the heavier the load the better it rides. when i get where i want, drop the car to unhook and drive away...easy peezzie then..i can cruise around about 2" off the deck till my little hearts content..i just have to avoid bottle tops and the like as they get trapped up under the bumper..he he he ;D i made mine so it only drops to 2" off terra firma at the chassis...juuuust in case something baaaad happens at 100 kmph down the freeway. that way the car won't hit the deck, dig in, and spiral me and the little lady out thro the windscreen. [ windscreens are damm expensive you know ] cu soon low life is "the" life

Is anybody booking in to Morgan for the Easter weekend prior to the week that is already booked? I rang the caravan park and they have no more powered sites left for Easter. Has anybody booked Easter? Does anybody want to go to a nearby caravan park if we can't get in ? I may not be able to attend the whole week of "The Great Bend of the Elbow" due to holidays later in the year. I will confirm this later.
Please keep me informed.

Hi all, I finally got a chance to sit and ponder on what we are doing with this run. I then realised that unless we organise the right hand side we"ll have caravans & towcars running in all sorts of directions. I recently discovered www.travelmate.com.au. Its a great site for planning trips. So with its help I suggest the following could work as a travel path. At this stage I'm working on Ray from Yarraman, me from Alstonville, Reddo from Newcastle, & others hopefully from Sydney & Wollongong. Ray leaves & travels to Coonabarabran, & I meet him there, & we camp in a park there. About 7-10 hours driving each. We both travel next day to Hay. About 8-10 hours driving. We camp in a park there & meet the others. They leave from wherever & meet at maybe Bathurst. They decide whether to aim for Hay, but its a big drive. Whatever timing happens with southerners , Ray & I should leave Hay on Monday morning for Morgan, supposedly about a 7 hour drive, hopefully with everyone else in tow. I realise my times are a bit longer than Travelmate shows, but Suzie Q & I cant go for too long without coffee & loo stops, & the Jailbar is very thirsty. So what do you other attendees of the run think.? After Retros comment about caravan parks over Easter, which is when we'll be travelling, we need to have stopovers booked very soon.

Hi Den I use travelmate a fair bit. great when you spot something for sale in some place you have never heard of and you want a fix on whereisit!!!and how far in hours. Get a route map and driving directions while your on there. can also use it to find outaccomodation current fuel prices in each town .
I have also been thinkin about which way and where to stop on the way to Morgan. Not keen on towing the van up Kurrajong hieghts and over bells line rd to Lithgow and bathurst. The old grey will die b4 i get outta NSW. Thought i might head up the new england to singleton and cut across through Merriwa and dubbo., down through grenfell, west wyalong and on to Hay. Could possibly hook up with you northerners at Coonabarabran or somewhere south of there on day 2.
Not too concerned about booking in anywhere . With the luxury of ice, 12 volts and metho i can stop at any roadside getoff or unpowered site in a van park just like our pioneering forefathers would have done. Mind you i draw the line at "Kangarooing behind a gum tree " when it comes to toilet breaks and "Number 2's"
Planning going on all the time.... stay tuned.

Jailbarjuice, Reddo, Retro1, Both Travelmate-- www.travelmate.com.au/MapMaker/MapMaker.aspand the NRMA one-- www.mynrma.com.au/travel_planner.asptell me I should go down the Hume hwy--through Wagga Wagga and meet you all at Hay. But then again, I could make an executive decision--ignore those high tech. things--if anybody want’s to go via Penrith and Katoomba--zoom down Mount Victoria and go to Morgan via Cowra-- West Wyalong & Hay, I could do that. Like Reddo, I reckon we will be able to find somewhere to park over-night. Talk about it at Coledale eh? I won’t be there the week before Retro unless a few others from this part of the world want to make a slow trip down to Morgan. Cobber.

G'Day Cobber The Wagga route seems to take forever. I am all for going in the straightest line possible between 2 points. Except if there is a big lump to get over. If your saying that your humpy Holden can drag your van up to Katoomba and down the other side of the "Sandstone curtain" known as the Great Divide then i am with you. I just get horrible visions of boiling radiators or buggered gearboxes up around the Kurrajong hairpins. Been years since i went up via Wentworth, Blaxland etc. So that route is cool with me. Once we conquer the divide then the rest is pretty much flat going . West wyalong, Hay plains, Balrenald, Mildura sit like bubbles in the middle of a spirit level.
Might pack a "cruise control " house brick for the accelerator pedal on the long flat bits. As you say we can talk about it and draw plans in the sand at Coledale.

I like the idea JBJ!! I wonder whether we are worrying too much about the availability of Caravan parks out west. I have never had trouble in the past, and, Jailbar, at the very worst, you could end up with an unpowered site, but still have your ameneties there for your wakeup exercises, OH YOU WHO ARE SO MUCH YOUNGER THAN ME!!! I will leave the planning to you guys who seem to do it so much better. Just tell me where to go and I will (sometimes) ;D ;D Cheers Ray

Ok, Ok, Ok!!!
Have listened long enough to complaints about hot showers in the morning and a proper place to "Go".... Gawd strewth bloody pensioners ~~~. Next thing ya know they will want thier daily fix of Chook raffles or Bingo at every RSL we pass. Talk about doing it tough.!!! I am packing a kero driven supercharged 454 cube.steam cleaner for that early morning freshen up/hose down. If 4000psi @ 100 degrees C around the private bits @ 5.30am on the roadside doesnt blow away the cobwebs then i am sorry i cant help you.
Also specially for Mr and Mr JB Juice i am toying with a "B Double X double" concept and fabricating a tow bar on the back of "Just Croozn" so i can tow a "His and Hers Port.a.loo" for those unplanned events where you get caught short between crappers halfway across the Hay plains ( No trees ) and have to "Unload" yesterdays camp cooking or that Big Mac that your stomach can no longer tolerate.
As stated before planning going on all the time.
