Hope to get pics on friday of this rather unique ute currently sitting on a mates hoist. Apparently only 50 or so made it to aust. They did not sell too well as too expensive compared to std chevs , fords and chryslers - back with more friday or sat jennison

Hiya Jeff, don't want to sound picky, but I thought I might point out that those old Ford and Merc Utes didn't come here....they were made here and only ever available here in Oz, likewise with the Chev Utes.....Oz only

Hi Kaybee What donk would that model have in it?
I used a 21 stud head V8 motor in a speedboat I built in 1963, very smooth runner, why the bloke wanted to sell motor only I'll never know, as the ute was a beauty, rag top from memory. I made my own water cooled manifolds. I have a feeling it was a '38 Mercury motor

Hi ST , Mercury engines are 239 cubic inches,3 3/16" bore....the Mercury line didn't start until 1939 and ran here until '48 , engines remained at 239 c.i. and were all 24 stud. If yours was a 21 stud , that makes it a '38 or earlier Ford , they were 221 c.i. and had 3 1/16" bore. If it came out of a ragtop Ute , it could have been one of these..... ...hope that answers your Q's ST ....cheers, Col.

AU turned a few makes into utes. There was the American Ford, GM utes built down under, plus, Vauxhalls, Vanguards, etc. This was photo was taken in California recently. Looks like some Americans are buying them over here and taking them back home ;D Cheers, Ron

Hi Col,
No thanks, I'd be killed by the better half! I already have three cars, a Suzuki Van that I use as a mobile toolbox and compressor shed, plus two Caravans ;D
All on a small house block.

Who would have done the coach work on the Merc ute back then in 46 ? Dave Dave, Ford started building Ford vehicles in Geelong from 1925, from Canadian Ford vehicles. (Commonwealth and all that ) The first Ford "Coupe" Ute was built in Australia in 1934. Ford AU always built the Canadian models and borrowed a lot of idea's from the Canadian Meteor, to build the unusual "Star Model" and the long running "Tank 1959 Model" from 1959 to 1962. As the Mercury just had slightly different changes to the normal Ford, it was most likely done at the Ford factory in Geelong. Cheers, Ron
