Glad you bought the subject of old American vans up Humpty ......I love the old American Airstreams ......they look fantastic behind the old yank tanks of the day ........
I've just finished reading a book on the airstreams entitled "Airstream .....the history of the land yacht".
The book's got some unreal photos .....I'll see if I can get Ditzy to scan & post some of the pics on this thread.

Hey Humpty An easy way to fix that problem - - turn the van upside down and put the axle on the roof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ray

Ray If you turned it upside down it would then become a boat!!..but I seriously wonder if you could just pick up the body and end for end it...or would it be easier to do a panel job to relocate the door...........I luv em!!especially the interiors........but if I got one I would probably have to buy a Caddie to go with it!!(did have a 58 coupe till 2000), just wouldn't look right behind an EH
Deb.......Bring on game 3...Joeys back!!!

I was born in and spent about 13 of my 55yrs in Canada. Dad bought his first Airstream around 1956 in Montreal. In fact the 3rd photo from the top in the pics above could well be his rig. It isn't actually...but it's a dead ringer as he pulled it with his ' 56 Buick Roadmaster. The Buicks original colour was the same dark grey metalic as in the pic.
I'll see if I can dig out some of Dad's early Airstream photos with the Wally Byam Caravan club. They'll all be B&W's. If anyone is interested.
I have actually wanted to suggest something to you guys, which this thread has reminded me of.
A big part of the Airstream success story was the formation of the Wally Byam Caravan Club. It was an club that organised trips...or "caravans" for people that owned Airstreams. (That's the meaning of the word "caravan" in their name. They call the Airstreams themselves "Trailers") Every member had their membership number in big vinyl letters across the front and back. (Ours was 2620) If you saw another member on the road, you could look them up in your membership book and see who they were, where from etc etc. I thought this concept of putting identifying numbers on your vans and printing books might be something you guys in this site might like to consider. This movement is growing rapidly and I personally feel this would be a good way of tying everyone together, and making make a bit of fundraising to help finance this site? Just a thought.
Oh yeah...apart from their weight..the other main selling point of the Airstream was that they were totally self contained for periods of up to a week. Even back in 1956. No need to find a park. Just pull up anywhere and park for a week. That was what sold my Dad on them.

Well. There's at least one that I know of. Or there WAS anyway. Must be still around somewhere.
Tommy Hanlon Jnr imported one back in the 60's. He used it for his own residence when he was travelling with his circus. I recall it was old by our standards even at that time. That was Circa 1960 to 63 so I guess his van may have been mid to late 50's vintage.
Now wouldn't THAT be a find? Any detectives out there amongst you all?
And, I recall seeing another apart from his. But don't ask for details. Its a vague memory only. It might come to me.

Mark ( who still cannot navigate the scanner, photo imagining softwear etc)............. got on his knees and pleaded i put these on for him Is he having a go at me in some way? ?? Y’know, some guys learn the trick of “I’m helpless so my partner will do things for me” from previous partners or girlfriends. Then we, opps, they, go looking for a patsy who is capable of doing all those odd things. How many others have daughters who pull that trick all the time? They seem to be able to get away with it more than their mothers. Dropping and breaking the odd plate can get you out of drying the dishes. Who said that??

Hi All After reading the posts on Airstreams and having a desire to own one (but not the bank account) I contacted the company in the US to ask if they were able to export them to Aust if someone wanted to purchase one. The reply from the sales guy is reproduced below for your information.
"Your sales enquiry has been passed onto me by my associate in Ohio…
Airstream Europe is now responsible for all Airstream New Products outside the US and Japan…we do have plans to appoint Airstream Retailers in Oz, NZ and SA in the next few years ( I plan to visit Aus and NZ in December)….for now, we are concentrating on the EU markets…last month we launched Airstream onto the UK market at the NEC Boat, Caravan and Outdoor Show….orders from which should arrive into the UK in late Autumn.
I have attached an online brochure and FAQ for your interest and delectation,as you will see EU models are somewhat different to US models..in widths, weights, components and specifications…they have been designed to suit EU roads/cars/needs…which we think also believe suit the Southern Hemisphere markets too.
Certainly, you could buy one of the new Eu models direct from AEU and ship over to Oz BEFORE we appoint AUS dealerships…depends on how anxious/patient you are !...
You could be the 1st. new ’Streamer down under.

I wish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sooooooooooooooooo who is going to be the first? Definately me if I win lotto cause as much as I love my vintage van to have a new Airstream AS WELL (not instead of) for the longer trips would be cool.
If any of you want to receive the brouchure and fact sheets they sent me post your email address and I'll forward them on to you.
regards
Paul
