Hi guys, can somebody tell me when Viscount first produced this design of Ali caravan. People with the 1958 or 1959 edition of "Australian Caravan & Touring manual" maybe able to tell me....... These are from the 1960 edition. Also does anybody know when Viscount vans first started? Cheers Mark Ps: you'll need your magnifying glass ......for some reason the scanner is scanning the pic too small

Mark Viscount was started by John Carr, originally in Adelaide in I believe 1956, then moved to Lansvale in Sydney around 1958. The Sydney van differed from the Adelaide van only in having a wider front opening window, while keeping the wraparound front corner windows. They were timber framed and I think the first vans to use the embossed ally, and all the cupboard doors and drawers were painted different colours. My family had a 1959 12' 6" model. Greg

Mark.. This is a 1955 Viscount with aluminium cladding. It was built in Adelaide before they shifted to Sydney a few years later. It was on display as a 50th Anniversary model last year. As mentioned the front window is smaller than later production, but with the distinctive wrap arounds. All the signs and logos are hand painted and as Gary mentioned the aluminium is a stipple embossed pattern. The interior in this van is original, complete with ice chest. It’s a very pleasant interior and in excellent condition. The chassis number (below) could be a clue to when production first started. Exterior Interior Stipple aluminium cladding (complete with perished rubbers) and raw aluminium window surrounds The cladding is difficult to clean and get an even finish. Chassis number I cant remember if it’s 133 or 433, but the number could be a clue to when production started, probably 54 or earlier. The hydraulic over run brakes and load distribution system are original on the van.

thanks Jim ......I doubted that the Viscount van pictured is a 1955 model, thats why I was seeking some evidence material, either a caravanning mag of the time or whatever else.
I thought it would have been built around 1958, because in the 1957 copy of Australian Caravan & Touring Manual, there is no mention of Viscount vans, but in the 1960 copy of the same mag the Viscount is advertised. I was hoping somebody with the 58 & 59 editions of the same mag could tell me.

Hi Mark I was away on the weekend on a vint bike run at a -place called Valla Park up near Coffs Harbour. . came around a corner off the highway heading into the van park and two blokes where in the front yard of a house taking to a viscoount ali van with an axe. i rode straight into thier yard on the bike and virtually crash tackled them. SSSSStttttooooppppp!!!!!!
They had a fire going and they where burning things as they tore them off the van . it was down to floor level. I managed to save three old light fittings. the sink and the ice chest. Yep... an ice chest. Not a fridge. Also managed to salvage a unique roof hatch winding mech from amongst the shrapnel. If i had been half hour later then the whole thing would have been destroyed. I always thought that ali vans like viscount had fridges. The van had signwriting up above the front window 'Viscount"and had alumin cladding like Jims picture shows. also was plumbed for gas . All this seems to indicate that Viscount hit the scene at that transitional stage between metho stoves, and ice chests to gas stoves and electric fridges. '58/'59/60 Will post a pix of the bomb site tomorrow. Cheers Reddo
