Hey Will No, no, no Will . I don,t think this David Jones is THE David Jones as in "Theres no other store like........." Howya goin' David glad to see another New South Welshman signing up. As Will has suggested try and get a few pictures up so we can help I.D your van. Is it Ply, Aluminium or Fibreglass??? Vangaurds are tough old cars. I got in trouble off a girls father years ago for bringing her home late from the drive in. The Vangaurd Spacemaster pooped itself coming up a big hill. When i got out to check what was wrong under the bonnet. I found the inlet manifold was glowing a dull orange causing the fuel to vapourise before making it to the cylinders. We climbed over the back and carried on where we had left off at the movies . Car cooled down ....and we heated up ;D Finally got home 2 hours late. Look forward to the pix of the van and dads vangaurd. i was gunna suggest you paint the van black and white hounds tooth chequers like the "David Jones store bags" Sorry mate!!! Ya need a sense of humour to survive around here. Reddo - Newcastle

Hey Will, Humpty2and other tren setters. Coledale camp clothing acceptable clothing. I will be packing my usual wardrobe that i take when i go "motorcycling" for a week of so. 2 - "Norton" T shirts 1 - "Real Motorcycles are made in england" T shirt. 1 - pair of oil stained Levis 1 - pair of Oliver steel capped boots ( just in case there is any cats that need kickin') 1 - pair of thongs ( for those formal occasions) 2 - pair of soxs and undies - wear them in the shower to wash them then hang them on the handlebars to dry while riding ( be carefull not to stretch the elastic in the undies). I find this very effective as you can quickly identify if you haven't done a proper job of scrubbin' your undies. 1 - hanky which mum ties my lunch money in..........this also is handy if the bike breaks down . I usually have enough tied in the corner of the hanky for a bus fare home........ brilliant. Reddo - "ONE" more sleep . cant wait, can't wait........Are we there yet???.... Dad I need a pee!!! ...Who farted ?. We want Maccas!!! .....Whats that noise.... sounds like a flat tyre..... thud, thud, thud. I told you we should have got new tyres before we left home.... Geeez dont start nagging me now woman!! ....Little Johnny stop poking your sister in the eye with a pencil!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh caravanning... aint it grand ;D

Tim 39, Shar similar age, Lilli 2 and Tessy about 2000 dog years, but nobody has told her so she still acts like a pup. Blue Mountains, NSW. Recently acquired ali clad Wayfarer, about 12', 50s, portholes, very spiffy. Put wheels on it, pulled it out of the shed it was built into in Gippsland and drove home - didn't even check the bearings (they felt fine). More, and pics, when I get a chance (few other projects to get through like the Art Deco kitchen in a Cronulla house we bought on ebay for $39 last weekend).
Been enjoying the site for awhile and have been bitten by the vvbug veeeery badly.

Retrovan, Coledale is on the Illawarra Coast near Wollongong. It is a meeting of like minded old caravans their owners and their various towing vehicles. It is held the weekend after the October hols ( i think that makes it 20,21,22 Oct this year but im sure to be corrected if wrong. if you are interested in going you better ring Norm on 02 42674302 and book cause i think theres quite a crowd going this year. By the way where in Blue Mtns are you? im in beautiful Blackheath ;D ;D don

Hi Kris (or do you prefer kaybee?), I'm a Melbournite born and bred....still have two brothers in the Dandenongs, and mum is still in the family home at Parkville (Melb Uni, hospitals, Royal Park, zoo, etc). Yep, we are looking forward to sharing our growing obsession - and whatever else - with all you obsessed.
Ain't ebay fun? Think we got a bargain with the kitchen, but have yet to try and take it out yet! The seller says that the tiles in the kitchen are glass...but I cannot think of a way of removing them intact. We live in a deco house and are going to install the kitchen in Shar's studio-to-be (which is in fact our existing kitchen, but that is being relocated - looks like the Wayfarer may be waiting longer than I would like to think).
ciao Tim

G'day Don,
Thanks for that info...have read so many references to Coledale here. Will chat to Shar, but methinks we are strong contenders for fronting up, so will ring Norm.....do you reckon the crowd will cope with a feisty 3 yr old (as she will be by then)? She does love "cabbabans".
Beautiful Blackheath? We're in wonderful Wentworth Falls! Hi upper mountain neighbour. Tell us about your van please.

mrfj55 - absolutely, for sure, yep. We'll be in it....although, as previously mentioned, our van will not be ready for a little while...
Actually, it is dry, sound and towable, so maybe with a bit of a clean and a blueslip, we could be mobile at shorter notice.
Let's start planning!!

Tim, One Propert Folding Van for people under 6 foot high, One unusual Clestory type roofed van handmade by a cabinet maker in the 50's. Both on the road and towable by a 46 Austin for when you need a near death experience, a 64 Toyota for graceful travel and a 76 Dolomite for when you want to get there yesterday. Isnt insanity fun. regards don

Don,
Funnily put. I am guessing you are over 6'. I have a particular interest in most things unusual and skillfully made, especially of timber, so would love to see your clerestory van one day. The shape of Dolomites, and their big cousins Stags have always appealled to me....but I would need some evidence that graceful Toyota is not an oxymoron - I have no position here mind you, if I can be shown a graceful old Toyota, I will be happy to enjoy its existence. One of our nondescripts in an 80s series Landcruiser, and although it has all the charm of Tupperware, I admire its solid reliability.
I reckon insanity is not only fun, it is so mandatory for an interesting life, that to not possess a bit is madness.

Whats it worth?...........what are you prepared to pay.......and then spend on it. the owner may have"sentimental value"...........tell him he can keep that, you just want the van to restore it to its former glory. Good luck, I hope you get it.
If you get it, start a new thread so we watch you progress.

Hello vintage vanners and trend-setters I'm 33yo and have a late 40's or early 50's (not quite sure) Teardrop Camper. I will be looking later in the year for a full size ply van from the 60's to restore... I'm just another loon from the beautiful Blue Mountains... As my username suggests I have a 1965 VW Beetle and a 1973 VW Type 3 Station Sedan... The latter is currently awaiting resurection. Anybody in the area wishing to meet up feel free to shoot me an email. Bigdidda is a good mate of mine as well... So the more the merrier Cheers Greg
