Hi folks,
Before I agreed to display “Driftwood” in Hyde Park during Motorfest I was informed there were a total of nine vintage caravans booked to display under the “Vintagecaravans.com” banner. At the moment we know of six of them...... Belinda, Reddo, Tickos, Geoff & Jude, Maurie & me.
If the other three don't intend displaying under the Vintagecaravans.com banner on the day could you let us know so we can fill those empty spots... (Gordon is not one of the missing three)
Cobber.

Bad news guys. Late model crap chev has dudded its radiator. None available in Australia. Can get a heap of new V8 rads but would need to find a bigger shroud because thats what holds the rad in. Would also involve making a water pump /fan extension boss so that the fan sat inside the V8 shroud... gets messy... Can get one built in S.A . 14 day turnaround on me supplying sample. Expecting a reply from a U.S parts importer this morning. around 7 days before delivery.. if they have one over there So.. sorry guys, I seriuosly doubt if i will be at motorfest. A local bloke has offered me his windowless Fc Panelvan to tow my van down there. Not keen on driving someone elses car in Sydney /towing a van. So .. I offer my NRMA invitation to anyone who is keen on being there with their car and van. Need to know very soon as i will have to mail it to you. Mail to anywhere in NSW is nornmally a 2 day effort. So please consider ..and reply here quickly. Damn I am gunna miss Judes jam and scones served from the Ritz cafe'. Bugger this late model crap with thier plastic and aluminium radiators. Glad it happened now and not on the way to Maroochydore in a months time... Then again an extended holiday while waiting for parts from america wouldnt be that hard to take... Reddo... currently "Nortoning" everywhere. ;D

Rough Reddo.... Dave & Tammy from Londonderry expressed an interest in going but I don't know how to contact them (other than PM). Can't ya just pick up another car off ebay or..... take up your mates offer of the FC Panel van, knowing you... you'd do the same for him, no worries. Cobber.

Col.. My timing is impeccable.. Yukon industries was shut for a month when i was hunting a towbar for the silverado. I rang him yesterday.. recorded message. Closed - reopen early February.. seems he doent mind a vacation ever now .... an now... and again. Cobber I am heading over to the bloke with the pannos place to look at early Holden steering boxes for the FJ ute this arvo. I might ask him if he was fair dinkum about the van offer while i am there. Might even approach him about sellin the bloody thing too me as a replacement for the offending Chev ute. Just got off the phone to 'Super-formance" in QLD . They where quite confident yesterday that they could get me a radiator out of USA in a week or so... ........... .......... pretty bloody sad when the yanks aint got one either. Couldnt be bothered going down the V8 radiator, shroud and waterpump boss extension conversion path so........ Looks like My radiator will be going ta ta's to S.A in tomorrows frieght for a replica to be built. . Will check with the local dude tsarvo on the way home. Never rains but it pours "Old Bill" my 12 year old Cattledog has gone in the back legs and has trouble getting up. Off to the vets tonight... might be his last ride with me. Been all over him lookin for ticks.. cant find a thing Will let ya know how i get on with the panno ( and "Bill"..) tomorrow. Reddo Reddo

Belinda and Robert and the boys will be at Motorfest. The Austin needs a few things done to it so we'll probably give the Citroen DS an outing.

Although i still haven`t received any word from Motorfest (gave them plenty of time) I`m heading out there anyways to have a look see.Mate has his highly modded `59 Karmann entered but apart from that the whole day should prove very worthwhile given the decades of motoring interests. cheers gordon

Motorfest 2009 was a bit different for “Driftwood” & the FJ as we were succonded to the “Australia Day Council of NSW” who are the people who organise the events in Hyde Park. They had a small area in the park they called “Australian Iconic Back Yard” .... there was a small stage where musicians played all Australian music at a very moderate volume.......... I WISH !! Barbecue food was available and a marquee tent where children were doing finger painting on calico aprons or library bags, which were available to them for $2 . The Australian icons consisted of eight beautifully restored “Victa” lawn mowers.... a “Hills” Rotary cloths line and .........” Driftwood”, the FJ and the junk I usually adorn them with. All in all it was a nice family oriented venue and I think “Vintage Caravanning” was introduced to an audience who may not have known we existed and........ I managed to sell my extra stock of “Vintage Caravan Calendars” ;D For both our arrival and departure they had to lay a road so we didn't “compact” the lawn That's us way in the background. Plenty of lookers all day. Cobber.

Hi All Woke up at 3.30am Australia Day Morning and figured if i went back to sleep and was woken by the alarm that i had set for 4.15 am i would be cranky. So.... Out of bed. scrub up and get dressed. Cuppa.. finish packing a few odds and ends into the mates panelvan that he so kindly lent me to tow rosie to Sydney with. I hitched the van up and set sail down the highway by around 4.30am. slight drizzle but nothing to make me back off the throttle, Bit by bit i snuck the speed up and gave the wheel a flick to see what the van would do behind me. All was happy at 55 to 60mph. Pulled up about 1/2hr down the hwy and stocked up on a few goodies to eat and some ice. About 10 mins before the end of the highway i got a call from Maurie. He was just pulling out of the driveway and would meet me at Wahroonga servo. I just pulled up and was filling the panno when him and his daughter swung in behind me. in the FJ ute with Doris wobbling along behind them. So off we went. In over the cashless coathanger... ( Sydney Harbour Bridge) and around to our alocated spot in Macquarie street. Tickos where soon on the scene with the '57 Chev and Daniels van in tow. Trodler with the yellow FJ Ute and Green Propert.. 5 mins later Belindas crew with the Citroen and pink and grey Atlantic.... Thats it.. only 5 of us?? I gave it until 6.50 and rang Cobber. Yvonne answered and said that they will be setting up down the other end of Macquarie street in Hyde park. Part of a "backyard" scene or something like that. The day was overcast and quite pleasant . again we had literaley thousands of people , in , under and around our vans asking all the usual questions. "do you actually sleep in there' ... Some of the people that where asking the questions where .. weeeelllllll ..... let me say.. If they had competed against Jenny Hawkins for miss universe ... they would have one.. So.as you can well understand.... I had to self moderate my answers about using the bed for other purposes than "sleeping" No matter what time of day you glanced up and down the street at our 5 vans there was always an owner proudly displaying and explaining to the masses just what a great hobby vintage vanning is. Of course there was the usual leads obtained on the whereabouts of old vans... Of which i am not going to elaborate at the moment Also have the phone number of a bloke with a"Caravan Club plate" will speak further with him later this week. I have to pick up an old 50s English travel case with flask etc.from Lane cove. While i was yarning with the bloke with caravan club plate Di ( homemade1954) who was sitting in a deck chair next to my old malleys tin esky had been approached by an old lady from out west pennant hills. Di had the pen out and was getting details on the address for pick up of an as new tin esky along with a wicker basket with early 50s picnic setting and a few other goodies. Just gotta be in the right place at the right time i suppose. Another local got yarning with us, He has an unrestored Don 120 with dodge truck wheels on it. was owned and used by a circus. He said the body is in good condition but the chassis and supports need attention. will be a body off repair job. I steered him on the the website details and i hope to see him join up soon. Went for a walk around lunchtime to check out the cobber display. Got up there .. no sign of him and Cobberette?? There was a band playing on a stage nearby and i figured they had done a runner to get away from the noise.... AAAAAAAhhhh the price we pay for being popular old mate. Add to this the face painting stall nearby and a heap of kids dribbling ice cream near his car and i cant blame him for escaping the scene. Drizzle turned to rain around 4.30pm and the organisers removed the barracades. There was a mass exodus of the open topped convertibles. Maurie and i eventually got out and over the bridge by 5.30pm. i ran into cloud and heavy rain up around the Hawkesbury which made for slow going. Got home around 7.30pm. Big day out for the 6 of us that took our gear to Motorfest,, Bit sad that only 6 of the 12 accepted entrys made it there. I appreciate that some had circumstances which prevented them from coming and i hope everything sorts itself out for those people. Would be nice next year to see a few new ( and some of the older ones) faces at what i consider the best opportunity in NSW to showcase our vans and our hobby. I get great pleasure from seeing both young and old appreciating these great old vans . The looks on the faces of the old and the storys they have to tell about "The good old days" is priceless...... And .................. the bodys on some of "the young (females)".... .. well.. yeah.. .ummm like i said... "i get great pleasure displaying our vans ;D ;D ;D ;D Who said that?? I am not sick Reddo

Some photos from Motorfest.. In no particular order and for no particular reason I walk up and down these cars every year and in the past have taken shots of favourites. This time it was just a random shots of a few cars . Seems like Maurie will be ok if he breaks down.. got his own mobile hospital ;D These 2 cars roll up every year laden with old timber snow sking and camping gear. Big old Packard straight eight... a very imposing vehicle.. Just to show i am not bias .. heres a couple of nice old Fords enjoying the day out. Oh yeah.. and those weirdo vintage caravaners where there too Did i tell ya about the girls... ooooooo.. ya shoulda seen the girls. Was gunna reel off some happy snaps of them hanging in the door of the van.... but i thought i might get arrested. ;D Reddo
