Hi all, I have just joined, having yesterday purchased a 1940's Lewis & Matthews (Glenhuntly)caravan. It is currently in Euroa in Victoria, and I need to get it to Sydney on a flat-bed truck. Anyone know someone who might do this for us?
I know nothing about this world, though we have patiently restored three 1960's Alfa Romeos (and figure if we can cope with how many bits fall off these cars, we are ready for anything). We have two small children, and are looking forward to exposing them to this whole world of quirky old things that need care and attention
I would be grateful for any leads about this manufacturer, or the van, which is in pretty bad condition but is intact (in a shed for 30 yrs)
Thanks in advance, looking forward to meeting you all online

Hi Madgirl, Congrats on the purchase, I too have two ankle-bitters and they love caravanning! ;D Hope yours will too. Dunno about getting the van out of Euroa. But I know Trewin Transport, based in Dandenong (outer Melbourne), run up the coast and probably up the hume regularly carrying vans. You may, however, need a local flatbed to get it somewhere for them to carry to Sydney. Give Trewin's a try on (03) 9768 2518, see if they go anywhere near Euroa. My experience with local tilt tray operators is somewhat dated they will charge $70-$90 per hour from their home to back there again, unless you can get a backload to share the cost. Someone else on here may have better idea Cheers, Tinnie

Hi Madgirl, Excellent price you paid for this old van!! And remember, no matter how bad it looks when it rolls into your driveway, it is NOT a box of firewood... Just remember the old vintage van mantra, "Where do we start!" (as opposed to "My Gawd, what have we done?!!"). Good luck with this project. It will give you many hours of ...(insert appropriate words here). I seem to remember another member on here about a year ago ("pcc" from memory...are you still alive pcc?) who bought his van on ebay and needed to get it trucked from Sydney to Brisbane. He rang around and found a smaller independent operator who did it for (I think) about $400. Since Euroa is not far off the Hume Highway, you should be able to get someone travelling through from Melbourne to Sydney with some space on the back. You might have to wait a bit to fit in with an opportunity. There are no responses when Googling "Lewis & Matthews" on the internet. All state and national libraries are linked on-line now and you can sometimes find snippets of info about old caravan brands. In this case, no luck, so any information will have to come from elsewhere. Welcome to a whole new world... cheers, Al.
