G'day Mark,
Depending on body and chassis numbers I'd say that this coupe utility was manufactured in Australia (SA) somewhere between '52 & 54 as it has a split windscreen. 1955 onwards had a one piece windscreen. (There was some overlap of sales however into '56 more so with cab chassis type vehicles with split widsreens)
The chassis number can be found on the left chassis rail near the front axle with the body number located on the firewall. NB this type of vehicle was not made in the USA but is based on the US type unit but with imported parts being sourced from Canada.
In Australia Dodge utes & trucks were distributed by Dodge dealers, Fargo through Plymouth dealers & DeSoto via DeSoto dealers, this arrangement lasted untill the late '50's when Chrysler Australia finalised state and dealer distribution arrangements.
This ute should have a 250 ci sidevale 6cyl motor with a 3 speed coloum change gear box along with drum brakes, 12v electrics etc.
Regards
Rob

thanks for that Rob, I knew a "knowledgeable" reply would surface sooner or later. I didn't know whether it was late 40's, or early 50's, but now I do ......and Terry was "on the money" !! Mark

Gday.
I realise this reply is a few months old but wanted to correct some details on years for your fargo.
The body style you have was introduced 1949 (pos '48?) and ended around '56 and the split windscreen was only used in the first year before going to the curved screen for all others.
Hope this was helpful.

G'day Mark,
Your utes body style was introduced after 1952. Utes manufactured from 1949 through to end of '52 or start of '53 did not have the quarter glass behind the doors and shared the same cab as the the trucks, they did have the small corner glass fitted.
As I stated before the split windscreen ran from 1949 through to end of '54 into the begining of '55. There was however some over lap of the use of split windsreen cabs but mainly with the truck cabins.
It must be remembered that I am referring to truck and ute bodies that were built in Australia, by Chrysler Australia, and not Chrysler USA. There were some major differences between the Australian built vehicles and the Yank models from 1954 onwards.
The coupe ute was only built in Australia along with some pick up types that were also manufactured here.
I'd say that your ute is a '53-54 model.
I've had a look at the brouchure and I think that it is a bit all over the place. The picture of the coupe ute shown on the first page is a 55/56 model. The green model shown further on is a '49/52. The vans appear to be '49-53 models.
I forgot about the 4 speed gear box, it was mainly seen in the long wheel base cab chassis 30cwt model.
Trust that this info' is of some assistance.
Regards
Rob

If anyone is interested, I know the owner of one of these Fargo utes, sitting on a farm and unlikely to ever get done up. Owner may be convinced to part with it...
Cheers Chris

I know it's been a long time...
But there's a couple of points which could be raised.
First, it is either a Dodge or a Fargo, as implied by the post from wroe. There is no such thing as a 'Dodge Fargo'.
Second, this style of roof, and probably the rear of the body, was shared with Internationals. Chrysler stamped the Inter bodies for many years. To my recollection of looking at traffic in the street when I was a kid, most of these models were of the 'pilot house' style with the vertical rear window and wrap-around corner windows each side of the rear window.
minicamper, where is your farm? Is the Fargo still there?

The images of the ute from original post seem to be deleted or at least I cannot view them. Perhaps someone can repost the images?.
Thanks, Jamie

Jamie, a lot of photobucket pics dropped off a few years ago, when photobucket decided that they want to withdraw the free forum download service and charged exorbitant membership fees. So these pics, along with a lot of others have most probably been lost. The administrator has been able to reconstruct a lot of the Down History Lane information at his own cost and time, for which we are always thankful.
