Opinions please...
My homemade bondwood resto is coming along nicely and we are just about to drop the chassis out to check it over.
The old hitch is a 2 1/8" ball with the flower nut on top ( I don't know the real name for it) but it seems to be flogged out so I'll need a new hitch. We also weighed it and it will be very close to 750kg unladen which has made me wonder about putting brakes on it.
I was trying to keep this van as period as possible and keep costs down but safety first, so...
1) get an old style hitch and hope it stays under 750kg 2) new hitch with hydraulic/mechanical brakes 3) new hitch with hidden electric brakes 4) new with electric and mechanical override so it doesn't limit my tow vehicle
Suggestions welcome

Personally I'd upgrade to a standard 50mm hitch and ball - much safer.
If you believe your van will go over the 750kg, then it would be wise to add brakes for insurance purposes. If your over the limit and have an accident, insurance will not pay. You may also need to upgrade your rego with correct weights.
Override brakes would be adequate - you should be able to buy brake drums to suit your wheel size. You will need an override hitch. Electric is an option but may require upgrade of wheel & tyre size. Electric will cost more, plus you need a brake controller fitted to your tow vehicle.

Thanks Greg. I have an elect brake controller already in my car, but I'm guessing my mates with vintage cars that may borrow the van won't be too keen to fit one. Moving to brakes will mean a new axle, and likely new springs anyway... $$$ 😣
