Could you please help me with a question i have about my beloved Caravan? She is a 1979 Eccles Ci Topaz and I love her.
My name is Kate, thank you for letting me join. I live in Mere Wiltshire, which is right on the border of Somerset and Dorset. I had a caravan man come over to fix my brake lights and he told me all about the new health and safety laws for built in gas lamps etc. Anyways he said my caravan is dry all except for one side where the guttering (whatever it would be called) at the bottom has come away and the wood is rotten just on one side along the bottom. He said what needs doing is to unscrew the guttering metal (?) and then put a new strip of wood and then put the metal back on. Can you help point me in the right direction please. Everyone seems to only do modern caravans, and i feel like i've been sent out to the wastelands for my caravan to be decommissioned under health and safety guidelines that don't allow anything retro. lol.
Thank you

Hi Katrina, Welcome to the forum and thanks for telling us about your Eccles. Sorry to hear about the wood rot problem you've discovered. That's a shame, but not uncommon in older caravans unfortunately. As you may be aware, this forum is focused on Australian vintage caravans. So, while we can tell you lots about Australian caravans, not many of us have experience with UK vans, and for that reason we may only be of limited assistance. Having said that, we are always happy to hear from vintage vanners form other parts of the world, and if we can give you any helpful pointers we will. It's a bit hard to know where to start unless we see some photos of your van (which we'll be interested to see in any case). There is information on how to post photos on the forum by clicking here. If you need someone to help you carry out some repairs on your van in your part of the world, have you tried the Retro Caravan Club in the UK? They cover caravans up to 1985, and 1990 in some cases, so you're well within their area of interest. Hope that's a starter? Don Ricardo

Hi there I have had a similar problem with my bespoke pre 1960 reproduction vintage bondwood van At edge exterior plywood panel the rot was repairable using Timbermate products available in Australia you may be able to source them in the UK or globally online They are : 1) Earl's Wood Hardener ( ok if it's not structural timber) works a treat retiring wood fibres affected by rot before filling 2) Fill with flexible filler in same line named Porion These are great DIY products for small imperfections as getting tradesperson assistance can be very costly Hope this is of some assistance Also when you say "guttering" do you mean aluminium trim? or what we term mouldings ? Please send a photo if you can Best of luck VeeVee
