Rather than clutter up Tooleyau's thread I thought I would create this new thread so that we can have a discussion on the subject and keep information together. Outside of the forum a couple of us have discussed the possibility of taking our vans along the Savannah Way which runs from Cairns Qld to Broome WA or at least a section of it likely Cairns to Katherine commencing May 2019. www.australia.com/en/itineraries/qld-savannah-way.htmlYou can do the entire trip Cairns to Katherine entirely on sealed road or be a bit more adventurous and include a bit of dirt. This is a quote from one of the tourism sites heading west to east. `Travellers in a two wheel drive or with a caravan can stay on the bitumen via Daly Waters and Cape Crawford as far as Borroloola and its great fishing. Two wheel drivers heading across the continent should look at travelling via Three Ways (near Tennant Creek), Camooweal and Mount Isa. Head north at Cloncurry along the Matilda Highway to Normanton and Cairns for a fully sealed journey maximizing your Savannah Way experience.' This may not even happen as a group but I am doing it anyway as part of my retirement plan so have a think about it and throw in your two bobs worth. Upfront I will state that I would not be planning a regimented trip. Koala

Did this trip some years ago without van in tow and just camped. Went from Cairns to Normanton, Karumba, Mt Isa Borrolooloo and across to Darwin. Just need to watch out for them wedge-tailed eagles - they can mess up your windscreen!!! But still a great adventure.

The little bit I have travelled in the Gulf we had a tough camper, no problems, the gravel varied from brilliant to lousy, it would depend on the recent weather. I guess one would not go this far without an excursion to Darwin (never been there). With a group at least there would be help if a VV did break down.
When we used to ride to a Ulysses AGM, we nominated a camp that night & everyone travelled at their desired pace, saw what they wanted & met up at night, if members didn't want to convoy this could be an alternative?
Does any one know roughly how many kilometers of gravel there is between Normanton & Daly Waters? We have 13 wind out windows in the Viscount!!!!!!!

... I guess one would not go this far without an excursion to Darwin (never been there).... Been there. Shenannigans great irish pub. Funny story. In 2007 a few mates and I travelled to England for the rugby world cup. We did a detour to visit my brother in Ireland. One of my mates said that he had always wanted to visit an Irish pub and be served a Guinness by an Irish barmaid. So a told my brother this and we went to his local. My mate ordered his Guinness, but was served by a delightful lass from Italy. Two weeks later I was in Darwin for work and found the Irish pub Shenannigans and walked in and ordered a Guinness, only to be served by a Irish lass from Dublin. I jumped on the phone and phoned my mate and said "just walked into an Irish pub and ordered a Guinness. I was served by an irish lass. We could have saved a bucket load of cash if we went to darwin insteadof ireland. Laugh, laugh , laugh." I won't repeat his response. Mike

We have done almost all of this on two trips in the Vagabond towing the Sportsman teardrop. Great trip with no real hassles apart from breaking a rear main spring leaf coming into Normanton. This was not a problem as I was carrying a spare!
The Vauxhall nutters long range group is currently planning our next trip - Katherine to Kalgoorlie via Kunnanurra. Early days yet but probably 2019 and we would be leaving Katherine around the time you are there. Perhaps some might like to join us and carry on doing what you started.
Leigh.

So if you are thinking of retiring or just tired of the rat race this is your chance to get away from it all in May 2019 for what I am sure will be a memorable trip through a very scenic part of Australia. I am not looking for a large number of starters but if you are interested then this notice gives you plenty of time to service your van for the trip. The plan is for bitumen only so any van should be capable of completing the trip providing it is in good condition. As per the format of previous successful tours which I have organised I only organise the broad outline of the trip and we bounce off each other and locals along the way with information and make short plans for the next day or two. We will not be booking caravan parks in advance along the way as I do not want to be tied to a timetable and we will likely free camp at times. Here are some photos to stir your interest. www.bing.com/images/search?q=savannah+way+photos&id=8F285A4B2ADD9C476098861688DB4F2DAE28999C&FORM=IQFRBAKoala

Now that the trip is bitumen, I would dearly love to do this, just for one thing that we are retired but back at work!!! (be it from home)

Hi Graeme I am still trying to get my head around how to get the best value out of the holiday. We would all be investing a amount of money in fuel cost which would not change much whether we do the distance over 1 week or 3 weeks so i am currently thinking of going slowly taking about 3 weeks to go Cairns to Katherine. Judy and i may choose to go on to Broome but i am not really including this leg in this tour........but i may be swayed if there is interest. Happy to consider any ideas. Graeme maybe we could deliver you back home to WA.👍😊 Koala
