what is the best way to apply internal ply sheeting?

Hi,

I am needing to reline the inside of my van (65 viscount Valiant) and just wondering what the best way to do that it?

I have been sanding back the wardrobe and found the evidence of little staples and have been looking down this path. We have a few Ryobi one+ tools and batteries and found the Ryobi one+18V cordless crown stapler may be an option? (we do not currently have an air compressor).

Does anyone have one? thoughts? Or is there a better or alternative way?

Hi Sonja,
Your request seems a simple one but without an image it is difficult to comment with advice.
Have you removed any ply to view the condition of the frame?

If the frame is solid (timber) then you have different alternatives to aluminium.

We replaced the ply in our 65 Valiant vintagecaravans.proboards.com/thread/15027/clementine-valiant-work-begun.

I borrowed an air compressor and used a Ryobi staple/brad gun. We used a 3mm ply and staples as I wanted to copy how it was originally. We then used brads to secure the timber strips that cover the joins in the ply. Canite was used for the ceiling. My advice is to take heaps of before photos. Next time I would use a better grade of ply, as it took a lot of patching and coats of paint to get it looking smooth.

The frame is timber and needs quite significant repair, it is more a case of the ply has fallen off internally as opposed to me removing it ; )
She got home in more pieces than when we picked her up (even on a car trailer).

So anyway I am getting quite ahead of myself really as I need to sort the frame first. However I am on night shifts and need to fill the time somehow. Research.....Research.......Research!

I will look into your work with interest Mel, thanks. I will take as many pics as possible however the roof and some of the walls have been replaced prior and look terrible so not really a good plan to base anything on.

I will try and upload a pic but at the moment, photobucket will not let me create an account. I need to get the 4 outer metal strips of the chassis replaced before I think about fixing the frame. With Christmas and the New Year rapidly approaching, I probably will not get into the full swing of things until at least mid January.

Nice to know what you are up against. As you are a researcher there are multiple Viscount renos here to read.
Nothing wrong with buying ahead, I did this when I could see where I was going, especially screws/sealers & the like.

It sounds like you have a good plan. Replace sections of chassis, get the van level then replace framing.

I would use a beed of sickaflex on the frame then push the ply against that and either use tiny nails like those used to apply window beading, or staples to hold it in place till the sikaflex sets. Nails are easier to fill but harder to bang in. However a pneumatic staple gun is fantastically easy. This is how I did the outside ply on Bessie (with nails and an tacking hammer) in Fisher's Resto. I cant imagine that the inside ply would be any different on a wood frame.

I am in the middle of doing the same thing. Replacing the frame. We glued, screwed and staple gunned our way through. More photos to come.

I am currently replacing the ply in our Olympic. I used a BC 3.6mm ply which has a good face for painting, but for smooth finish it took a lot of painting and sanding. If my crystal ball was working I would have bought a ply with a better surface such as an "A" surface as said by a previous poster. I have put a lot of thought in the way to secure the ply to the framing. Where I can clamp the ply I will use an adhesive, but If cannot clamp the ply I will use adhesive still but hold it in place with brad nails, then fill the hads with filler. I will used a polyurethane wood glue for the cupbords and a sikaflex type adhesive for the walls. I looked at staples but the fine wire gauge staple don't appear to be avaialable anymore.
