I've started to wire wheel the A-frame tow bar in preparation for repainting and finally noticed these brackets which are bolted to the tow bar. Can anyone tell me what they are for? They don't appear to server any purpose. Did they have a previous purpose? I'd like to take them off Cheers, Lexy

Hi Lexy they are for the stabilizer bars, if you don't have the rest of the bits you might as well take them off. PAul

Easy Lexy, they are part of anti sway bar system (probably has a flash PC name now). Special fitting was on the tow bar with holes and either 2 or 4 steel bars roughly the shape of Bo Beep's crook that ran from car to van and help prevent swaying from incorrect loading
Wont be long before someone will post a picture for you Rod
Previous comment whist I was typing, you can also leave them on and buy the rest of the set. If you like I will give you two of the bars, gratis

Thanks for all the replies, gents. Very informative! I don't have any of the other bits, so I've taken the brackets off - at least for now while I repaint the A frame. @rodnet - Thank you for the offer. I'm still trying to get my head around how these things attach and how they work. Rattles - the photo and link really explained at lot - it got me off and running on the right track. I'm now reading up on weight distribution and ball weight - something I wasn't aware off and which is actually quite important... as this Youtube video so graphically demonstrates: link to video This REALLY opened my eyes! What's the consensus on anti-sway bars? Does proper ball weight and correct weight distribution obviate the need for them? cheers, Lexy.

Getting your ball weight right is important but a Weight Distribution Hitch (anti sway bars) does help with issues such as when a big semi overtakes and creates a wash of air that can unsettle a van. I have a set from Trojan in Victoria which is made up of half leaf springs with an adjustable chain, once set up my van is very stable. Ian.

I think they can be a good thing, but I still don't understand HOW they work. More reading on my part required. Perhaps if I see one "in the flesh" it will become clearer. I'm brand new to caravan towing, so far I've only ever towed mine 3 times, first on purchase and next 2 times on the same 600km round trip - up Syd/Newcastle freeway and Pacific Hwy and then back again. I'm an experienced trailer tower, just not caravans....yet. But, from the little that I've experienced, the caravan tows very well, with no sway at all.
