Just got home a few hours ago & having looked at numerous houses i bought the old 1935 Cascade Brewery Depot.3-4 bedrooms, toot & bathroom on far side.Kitchen/dining/lounge this side along awning & to behind double garage under sign.Entrance accesses rear of double garage via raised walkway.Steps lead down to driveway.Huge workshop on right under the peak roof. 481m2 land x 276m2 structures.(30 squares). Two minutes walk into town.Think i did alright.

Good on ya Gordon, vintage with a bit of history attached to it no doubt, slap a bit of water based acrylic on it and she'll come up a treat. Do you know how long ago they stopped using it as a Cascade Brewery Depot, and will there be enough room to display your great collection of junk treasures We saw the 'Back Roads' programme about Queenstown recently and it looks like a town with a determination to not only survive but get better so, good luck with move Cobber.

Hi Gordon Moving is a big undertaking at the best of times. However with all your bits and bobs, as well be getting your new spot up to your usual standards, you should be busy for ages! I hope you enjoy retirement and pottering in your new shed. It certainly looks a very pretty spot - you DID do well! Cheers Seeshell

hi gordon nice to own a little bit of tasmanian history. (did you find a stash of unused product in a corner somewhere). i presume you'll keep the original signage on the shed to highlight it's past. also just wondering if the third bedroom photo should be included in the "tea towel rail" thread. good luck with the move, we hope it all goes well. geoff 'n jude

Well Gordon an official Tassie welcome unbeknown to most to the VV capital of Australia !!! I'm sure there are a few vans tucked away in sheds down your way just waiting for someone to sniff em out!! Looks like a great pad to call your own but you'll need to change the sign to Boags Brewery! A much better tassie drop!! I'm sure Tassie will agree with you and you'll get to know the locals pretty quick down that way! I'll be sure to look you up when I'm down that way and make sure you do the same when you get up this way! Enjoy moving in and make sure you have plenty of dry wood ready for the "short" Queeny winter!!! Cheers Andrew

The sign will be re-sited to front of workshop where it used to hang.Evidence points to raw timber outline just seen on front of workshop Pretty unique towel rail.Might see how much i can flog on eeebay!! Its a 30 day settlement with probably a further month to pack & transport stuff.Huge move by all accounts. gordon

Gday Andrew. Loved the week i was away there.Fresh air. NO humidity!Couple of brusque remarks from some quarters ...."oh,you`re from the mainland moving here.Yeah, well we`ll see how long you stay. You know its cold here.It rains a lot. Mightn`t be what you expected". Thing is i don`t care if it rains or is cold or freezing or snowing. That`s what jumpers & gloves & wood fires or air cons are for.Besides i have a lot of work to carry on with re the inside of the building. Too late i saw a vintage teardrop. Red in colour being towed by a 4x4 about lunch time Tuesday heading out of Q/town & didn`t have time to grab a pic. I was of course in a Tassie coach as we passed it.Can`t ask the driver to pull over coming thru the 99 bends!Did see some older ali`s in various parts.Another month & i`m going down again & will have camera at hand. gordon

G'day DC3Td and Akeepsake, Good to hear about your projected move DC3Td. I trust it will be a really good one for you and that you will find it a great place to be. And Akeepsake - a bit more support for the '2018 Nationals in Tassie' push, eh? DC3Td can help sort out the western leg of the after-Nationals tour. Don Ricardo (only half joking...)

Hey Gordon, Make some enquiries so the mainlanders can use the local footy ground for a stopover on the after-nationals 2018 "tour du tassie " No namby-pamby grass there .Toughen 'em up before they go home . and the bonus is they will probably pay us to stop there

G'day Murray and DC3Td, Murray's post brings to mind staying in a tent at the caravan park at Queenstown in the early 70's. The caravan park was entirely covered with gravel and hammering the tent pegs into the "ground" was a tough exercise. At the back of the caravan park was a creek - actually a concrete channel - and from memory the footy ground was the other side of the creek. Is that correct? The treeless hills and mountains surrounding Queenstown had a stark beauty like nowhere else I've seen. Are they still like that or has the vegetation begun to grow back now that mining activity has reduced? Definitely a place to include in the 2018 V V Nationals tour! (Keep talking it up Taswegians. ) Don Ricardo

Hi Murray & Don Ricardo.I took a quick look at the oval.Forget steel cap boots rather need steel knee caps! Its a doozy of an oval i can tell you.Vast areas of regeneration have been & are in progress given the treescape was raped through the years in the name of mining. So its looking much healthier although a long way to go yet.But its happening.ABC ran a story on Queenstown a couple of weeks ago."Back Roads" with Heather Ewart.Bit of an overview rather than an in-depth episode but none the less quite good viewing as it shows Queenstown now although there are some flash backs. There are at least 3 major banks,2 IGAs,modern hospital & library.Couple of clubs one being of course an RSL.Plenty of food shops/pubs/motels,cop shop,PO,huge Museum (a must see) etc.I stayed at the Mountain View Motel which is 2 minutes walk into town.Quaint early miners quarters but are well fitted out.On site laundry/bbq.Plenty of room to park a DON!! Best make sure you have a Telstra mobile. Or at least a current Optus otherwise no contact with the outside world. cheers gordon

Bumped into SGTL and family in the last few days touring Tassie They are thumbs up for 2018 Nationals Momentum building!!

Hi Gordon Good luck with the move, they are special folk that live on the west coast of Tassie, tough!! It can be a harsh place. I had friends at Renison Bell (now just a name on the map, the town has gone) years ago and I stayed with them in 1971. Frank had lived on the west coast most of his life and didn't say much, but after I spent an afternoon in Queenstown taking photos and remarked about the lack of trees, he looked up from his paper and said, "Bloody forest there now to when I was a kid!" This is a photo from 1971, I don't know how it relates to your photo, but you can see it was pretty barren. Queenstown- Mt Lyell Mine - 1971 by viva gt, on Flickr or this view. Queenstown - Mt Lyell Mining Co by viva gt, on Flickr Looks like your place will have room for the Velox, just make sure you rust proof it. The ABC show the other night casually mentioned an annual rainfall of 3m! In 1971 I wasn't that interested in cars, but I was alarmed to see an FB Holden ute in Zeehan with football size holes rusted through the top of the front mudguards!! All the best once again. George

Hi George. Its a lot prettier looking place now.Huge swathes of regeneration over the past 20 or so years have given it a totally new look. You really have to see it up close & personal to appreciate. As for the Vauxhall it is sold to a forum member who might enlighten the purchase themself when ready to. cheers gordon

I suppose that would be me then? And very jolly excited about it too! Can't wait to get the Vauxhall on the road and dragging my Globe hither and thither across the continent, though not in time for the Nationals this year I'm afraid, will have to be satisfied with the old Subaru for a while yet.

Hi Griffin and DC3Td, I was in Queenstown in 1972, so Griffin's photo is very much how I remember it. I'm pleased to hear from an environmental point of view that there has been a lot of regeneration going on, but the bare mountains did have a certain beauty all of their own because of the colours of the rock, and the road down the mountain into Queenstown gave some breathtaking views. It will be fascinating to see how the place has changed when we go down there in 2018...after the Nationals... Don Ricardo
