Hi, Well new tyre’s all round including the little 8’’ on the dolly and a good clean to check out what’s going on, note the slight damage on the door side the van was dragged out of a burning shed, few melted clearance lights and a slight wobble but not to bad. The dolly wheel really feels comfortable when towing. Happy Holidays All Cheers S&J

She owes a lot to Millard from the same period.....but enough differences to not be a millard. If you need to replace the bushed bolts holding the dolly wheel trailing arms, they have to made in an engineering shop. Cost about $260. I haven't towed the '61 Millard yet.....I think it is finished. I might even put some photos of it if I can get some co-operation from Photoetc. Strange that my Millard with the Jones wheel also came from Belmont

Hi All What a nifty van you have - much enjoyment to come I am sure as you get out and use it. We have a Jones Wheel (as above on this van). We do regularly use our van, so we tow with it. However, be prepared to be pulled over often by the Police, as from behind I suppose it looks as if you're driving with your dolly wheel down. It is very helpful when pulling into a tight caravan park: unhook and we can push our van around and into place. Also an excellent conversation starter with people at the camp. I love it. As for the braking system - we changed to electric brakes on the van with a controller in the car (tekonsha). The front wheel has no brake of course, it is free floating. I have seen others with what looked like a hydraulic system but not sure if it was still in use that way. Enjoy Seeshell (The Blue Flyer)

I fitted electric brakes.....originally most had air operated brakes fitted. You will probably need a new axle to take the backing plate for the electric brakes....the old stud pattern for the backing plate is somewhat smaller. I think you can also get the new pattern welded onto your old axle after removing the old one via angle grinder, oxy or whatever

OK, sitting contemplating today(should be working..ha) you will notice I have found his name was Vincer not Vinger from Belmont NSW, I checked white pages and found no Vinger in the area so I rechecked an ad that came with the van and found a C not G, ok bear with me, so the first call found his cousin who said that Jack passed away some years ago so he gave me Jacks daughters number so I spent an hour learning about the man that built these great vans..so good.. wait theres more...they all used the vans and passed them on to other family members until finally they left the family......except for the first one he built in the late 50's which his great niece still has....you can guess the rest, spoke to her today and she will forward photos and we will go from there. Note: they were all built with a Jones Dolly Wheel... should have been a private detective..ha, will post pics soon. Jack was a self taught carpenter/joiner mainly doing house windows out of his joinery in Belmont and the occasional caravan. Cheers Stephen&Julie

Hi all, At last we may have solved the mystery about the origins of the following van first shown to us in 2016. It seems fairly possible that it is the “lost” fifth caravan built by Jack Vincer. As can be seen from the story of two of his vans shown higher up this thread, Jack Vincer was located in Belmont, NSW, and fitted his vans with a Jones Dolly Wheel as is this one. That’s not conclusive evidence, but it turns out that the van below passed through Stephen&julie’s hands, which allowed Stephen to compare it to the other Vincer van he owned (see above). I contacted Stephen&julie today to enquire whether the van below might be a Vincer van, and received the following reply: ”Very good chance, dolly wheel, same cladding, similar materials...”The caravan has now been renovated and is for sale on Facebook. Don Ricardo I recently received an email regarding an unusual caravan belonging to new forum member Polly, although Polly is actually the name of the caravan, not her owner - hence the question 'Who built Polly?'. The email came from Jen who wrote: "My brother, Brad who lives in Nabiac has purchased an old aluminium clad caravan which has a Jones Dolly Wheel on it.
"The story as I understand it, is that the caravan was originally purchased by a Mrs Rumbel (?) who lived on a farm somewhere out beyond Dungog. She bought it for her son to live in, which he did for many years until he passed away, when it was then stored, untouched, in a shed on the farm.
"I have attached some photos in the hope that you may be able to identify it or perhaps know someone who can? Also he needs to get work done on some of the components of the dolly wheel, and the van itself, and any advice or assistance you can render will be very greatly appreciated."Photo showing the offside front corner. The piece of timber strengthening the corner is covered with the same laminex as the splashback in the galley and the shelf at the rear of the van: Overhead cupboard containing the electrical fuses and an exhaust fan (see reference below). Note also the gas light fitting below the cupboards: Nearside rear below the windows: In responding to the email, I asked Jen about the nameplate above the rear window and whether or not there were any identifying numbers on the van. She replied: "The plate says 'Belmont Caravans' and has the phone number followed by 'York' and 'Millard'...standard dealer ID?
"[Brad] cannot find a serial number anywhere on/in/under the van but yesterday found a handwritten 'H137' on an unpainted timber panel inside a cupboard near the power inlet. There is also the words 'Pacific S?' on the other side of the same outlet. Brad thinks the word could be 'Safari' but I can't make it out from the photo and I have attached copies for you. However all this could be red herring stuff.
"The dolly wheel plate has the Kingsgrove address."I was really interested to see the photos, because of some of the caravan's unusual design features, in particular the large bulkheads above the front and back windows, and also the large bodywork bulges below the windows - all much larger than I can remember seeing on a van before. As a result, the front and rear windows are very deeply recessed into the body. Based on the general design and cladding, etc, as well as the coloured panels on the side, my thinking is that the van would have a build date in the first half of the 60's. In addition the facts that it has a Jones Dolly Wheel and was bought by somebody near Dungog, suggests that it was very probably built in Sydney, or at least NSW. That might sound a bit obvious, but at least it helps to narrow down the number of possible manufacturers. And perhaps the number 'H137' - if it is a serial number - may indicate the van was built by a manufacturer beginning with 'H'. However, the only manufacturers in NSW we have listed with a name beginning with 'H' at this point are Hunter (which were apparently built by Fleetwind, and had a serial number beginning with 'F'), and Harvel (who apparently only built 6 caravans). Incidentally, the number and the writing 'Pacific S.....' are in the cupboard containing the exhaust fan referred to above and may or may not refer to the caravan itself. I am assuming that the 'Belmont Caravans' nameplate refers to a caravan dealer in the Newcastle suburb of Belmont, which would fit with the fact that the van was owned by someone from Dungog, located around 90 kms north of Belmont and Newcastle. However, the nameplate also refers to Millard and York. York caravans were only introduced by Millard in mid-1969, so that indicates that Polly has gone through Belmont Caravans hands sometime after mid-1969, and later than the apparent build date of the van. So presumably this means that Polly was sold second hand at that point. I can't remember seeing a van like Polly before on the forum, but perhaps someone else can? ...

Hi Daisy123, That’s exciting to hear about another Jack Vincer van. We’d love to hear more about it and see some photos of it. There’s information on how to post photos on the forum if you click here. It is easier to post photos on a desktop or laptop, but can be done from your mobile too. If the instructions look too hard, you’re welcome to email the photos to me and I’ll gladly post them for you and you can then post about the photos. My email address is: caravanhistory@gmail.com It will be great to see some pics of your van and how it compares to the other Vincers. Don Ricardo
