Looking for some advice. I bought some 300mm square x 2mm thick vinyl tiles for my wife's Ambassador. It's got some old sheet vinyl in situ which is in reasonable condition and I wondering if I can glue the new tiles directly to it. What types of adhesive would suffice? I was advised that acrylic (water based) may not be suitable as it usually requires a porous substructure in order to dry. I'm trying to avoid those nasty solvent based glues if possible. Any suggestions are welcomed. Cheers, Sam

If you take up the old you could be opening Pandora's Box, but you would then be dealing with the original substate. Why not tack some (just a little glue) in the main walk way then you would know if the whole job is going to stick?
Think you will have to use a solvent glue, to enable adhesion.

this worked for me pressure sensitive / initial cleanup with water before it sets then cleanup with turps when dry cheers Murray

Thanks for the responses. I don't want to use solvent based glue because of respiratory problems. Murray, did you use the water based one laying vinyl onto vinyl? Cheers, Sam

Only had to stick to wooden floor . Had a few tiles to take up with aid of heat gun and Scraper couldn't smell the glue but my olfactory senses are lacking. Probably need to ask supplier about suitability in sticking to old tiles. I saw it was for carpet tiles but it worked well cheers

The pressure sensitive water based adhesive is the go I was recommended it by a vinyl layer and like Murray lifted old tiles with heat gun and scraper Minimallly sanded area but wet it down first if you don't want to lift old tiles I would recommend laying some thin sheeting over them to give u a good base for adhesion Hope that helps Cheers Andrew

Thanks to all those who offered advice. I ended up using Dunlop water cleanup tile adhesive with a 1mm notched spatula. Worked really well but a bit slow to dry - took about 3 days! I've never laid vinyl tiles before but no major drama. Cheers, Sam
