hey guys i have a sixteentwo carapark van id like to move on to someone that is into these old rigs. its currently not in the best of shape and is just being used to store tools and such . i have lived in the van previously and it was watertight. however over the last few years the rivets have started letting go. the roof is still sealed as i did that about 6 yrs back and covered the rivets with roofing sealant . she is in a bit of a sorry state so i am only asking $100. pics are too large for this forum so i will make an album on my facebook and post the link here . im selling the old girl because i am just too far disabled these days to be able to do the work that is required to restore her to former glory. feel free to message me on face book with any questions so i can reply to you sooner. i would hate to see it go to scrap as they are getting hard to find these days and in thier day were a fine example of hand built craftsmanship. pics are at www.facebook.com/lee.meredith.90EDIT: should be a 12/9

this van is a 12/9 not a 16/2 A bit too long to be a 12 footer Just look at the pic, 16/2`s have a window just before the door & a port hole on the other side, this van is a 12/9 with a sloping roof.

im not entirely sure how they are measured but from the end of the drawbar to the back of the van is 16ft2 and a bit. inside is around 12 1/2 or so been very hard to find info on this van and i cant find a serial number on it. could be hidden under layers of rust and or paint lol . from what i understand also is that any of the vans could be customised ie floorplans and number of windows etc but i may of course be wrong. folks are more than welcome to come and have a look at it and give me any info if they can . it has no idenifying stickers that i can find as to model type . was used as an onsite office for a lot of its life i beleive and may have had things changed on it over the years but i beleive the exterior is original . does have an old sticker on the rear of the van for the hire company it used to belong to but is hard to read . van is located in mt gambier in sa . feel free to pm me or message on facebook on the links provided further up the page . im not asking a huge price for it as i know it will be a lot of work to restore and i dont want to see it scrapped.

if the drawbar isnt included in the size then it may well be a 12-9. i had a look at the back of the van and cannot find any evidence of a sticker indicating model/size etc . i understand that it may also be stamped somewhere on the drawbar as well. i will have to get the high pressure hose and a wire wheel out and see if i can find either but i wonder if the hire company that owned it previously removed these . i have a few photos of the van and can take plenty more if people want them but im unable to upload them here. my camera even on the lowest resolutuion is still too big for the filesize limit here. i will upload them to a image sharing site somewhere when i have the net to myself .

Out of curiosity, what's the serial number? It should be on the badge just under the back window, &/or stamped into the drawbar.

Have you posted it to the Carapark group on Facebook? I don't remember seeing it, but may have missed it.

Hi Legleg,
Hopefully somebody will rescue the Carapark you have, if they haven't already.
I note that you describe the van as being approximately 1951, however Carapark didn't introduce the aluminium "toaster" models until 1954. So your van won't be any older than that. In addition, for the first few years of the toasters the various models carried over the model names of the previous bondwood or steel models such as Hunter, Hunter Junior and Superb. In around 1958 the model names were changed to the size of the vans, such as Twelve-Nine, Ten-Nine, etc.
I'm not sure whether there are any nameplates on your van showing a model name, but if there are that will help you work out roughly when your van was built.

The name change happened a bit before '58 — my Sixteen-Two is a '57. S'why I was asking about serial number on the drawbar, that seems to include a year reference as, I agree, 1951 can't be right.

Hi Justanotheramy, Thanks for the info about the name change for Carapark models. 'Around 1958' was as close as I could get based on reading adverts, etc, so it's good to be able to be more precise based on your van. Don Ricardo

Mine has the layout advertised in 1958, with a drawbar stamp that starts 57. They may've started production before advertising. To clarify these sorts of questions (and others) I'd really like to take a bit of a census of Caraparks belonging to and known to members… model, year, serial, drawbar stamp… but no-one seems to want to play.

As an update, I purchased this van as no one else wanted it (as is clearly evident here...) and it was going to be scrapped for sure as the owner had to get rid of it. I shipped it from SA to the far south coast, it was a real wreck and is undergoing a full ground up resto in my workshops at the moment. I have had to replace about 30% of the frame and most of the cladding is roached out also. Surfice to say this van was saved but will be used for commercial use as there is no way I could recover what it will cost to do as a touring van.

Hi Stevej,
Good to see work has begun on this van.
Can you confirm it's length? Is it 12 ft 9 in, as speculated earlier on this thread? And if so, is it pre-1957/8 and therefore a Carapark Superb model (as opposed to a Twelve-Nine)? That's what the wheel arches and the livery suggest to me.
If you can let me know, I'll amend the thread name - it's a bit misleading as it is.

Yes it is a 12/9. The serial number (61S1574) indicates a 1961 supurb no 1574. Post 1957 all had the wider full width front window, fly screen insert doors and larger roof hatches . the 55 and 56 had narrow front windows, unscreened (solid) doors and small square roof hatches. Cladding all on now, windows restored and being refitted. It will be back on the road in another 6 weeks. Had to upgrade whells, hubs axle and electric brakes to comply with 2000 kg weight rating. Wheel arches have been modified (not shown) to accomadate the larger weight rated 15" wheels Cheers Steve
