It has been slow moving since I first got my Furness caravan this year but I am finally ready to start getting some serious work done on it, otherwise my mum start getting stressed out that it will stay in her shed forever!
Over the past few months I have simply been clearing it out and getting rid of some old dust and grime on the inside and outside. I have almost removed all of the hinges and latches from the doors which i plan to remove the rust from and have them electroplated so they look like new (well depending on the cost and my budget).
This week my brother was finally able to come and have a look at it and give me some advice on the electricals. Thankfully he is willing to do them for me and help me source what I will need for it.
I have found a two areas which i will need to replace the masonite on the outside and I'm hoping that when I strip it back I won't find any more.
I am looking forward to redoing the roof original with canvas. It appears to have to join lines down the middle of it so I may sew mine to be the same. If anyone could give me advice on the exact process or recommend products/brands that would be very helpful.

Sorry I have been having a bit of trouble trying to upload my photos from my phone but I think I have worked it out now. Here is a link to an earlier thread which shows a few photos of my caravan when I first got it. Furness Caravan

Here you can see the lines of paint cracking on the roof of the caravan which I believe are the joins in the canvas roof Here shows a close up on the back of the roof where the canvas is laid over some black stuff, i assume it is something like asphalt and will waterproof the roof. Can anyone give me more insight? Then there is also the pink tape that goes over the canvas. I am considering using fibreglass instead of the tape and have had a friend confirm that it will give the same effect under paint anyway. This is a nice close up that shows how the paint on the outside has faded over the years. I will try to match my new paint with this colour. Underneath The water tank which has a small whole in the bottom.

Hi Amy love the old Furness's with their sliding Windows and racing stripes ! They are hard to come by so you are very privileged to get your hands on one! Keep the picks coming of inside and out! Do you have a history on your van? Would love to hear more ! Well done Andrew

Thanks Andrew it is a real beauty and Im becoming more aware of how lucky I am, it was certainly right place at the right time. As for the history I have a small bit of information the previous owner got it off of his parents who got it second hand. His parents bought it when he was a boy and it only went from Penola to as far as Beach Port. So it didnt do much travelling then and has been in a shed in Port MacDonnell since 1989, which has left it in good condition. I believe there has been some repainting done at some stage as there are some drip marks around but Phillip doesn't think his parents repainted it so that may have occurred beforehand to spruce it up for sale. Anyway next time I catch up with him I shall have to see if I can investigate any further.

The work on my Furness has been very slow as this is my first big project and I have been trying to figure out how to go about it but finally today I got a bit of work done thanks to the help of some friends too. I finally have got all of my windows off and just have a few more screws to take out for the frames, they are painted in well and rusty too. All the pink tape has been removed from the outside so I could get a good look at the sides and such. Also we started pulling up some of the canvas off the roof. I was pretty happy about the condition of most of it but we found a bit more damage than what I had originally thought (or hoped for really). At the front I thought a bit of the wood was damaged but once we pulled it off the whole underneath was rotted through too and the inside wall. So consequently I currently have a much larger window hole. There are quite a few bits around the bottom with are also no good and then also underneath. Anyway it was a good days work and has given me plenty to think about for the next week until I see it again. Just for interest: i found 824 in 2 spots This second one was on the flyscreen for the hatch. This is behind the flyscreen inside, these 2 colours are underneath the current one. I also have bits of the blueish grey on the outside, could this have possibly been the original colour?

Last weekend a friend was able to help me get my van lifted up so I could start getting under it and wire brush the chassis. I am about half way through and a few tears have already been shed about how much work I still need to do and I am moving half way across the country at the end of next month! Of course I wont be able to get it nearly finished and ready to go on the road by the new year, well short of a miracle anyway but I will just have to keep plodding along.

Hang in there Amy step back from the big picture and just focus on each little or "big" job until there isn't any left ! I'll get done eventually It's such a great van so it'll all be worth it when you finish and are enjoying the great outdoors!!

Amy, My daughter and I just purchased a Adelma van built by cappolla brothers. We understand that it is cut from the patterns of the Road master vans. We don't know the year or model as yet and haven't started our renovation. I notice your vans roof is made from the same material as ours. Our van is seriously water damaged and will need replacing but we have no idea how to start. I have searched but as yet have no helpful information. can you offer anything please? Regards Sharron

Hi Amy I'd love to talk to you about your restoration as I have just started one of my own, although my van is a little older than yours. You can contact me via andrew10122@gmail.com
