Hi Guys, I have been fortune enough to purchase this early Viscount Royal caravan and was wondering if anyone could help me determine the year it was built. The van itself is actually in very good original condition considering its age, the lady selling it thought it was about a 63 but I think it may be a bit earlier. One of the interesting things is the word Adelaide hand written bottom left of the door which made me think it might have been built in SA and I believe Viscount relocated in 58?, serial number or id number welded on the draw bar seems to read 630, the rear window has been replaced at some stage with a double opening type and a gas/electric fridge installed as well at some time, other than those two things the van seems totally original including the original four colour interior paint, cloud pink, china blue, primrose and dawn grey, also written in pencil on the bottom of the draws. Amazingly the van is still registered and due to its great condition I would love to restore it back to its former glory, and our young family are extremely excited at the thought of heading away in our (new) caravan!, any information would be greatly appreciated as well as any leads on new old stock parts such as window rubbers, hinges, tail lights, running lights etc or any aftermarket manufactures you might be aware of. Thanks for your time and I’m very much looking forward to hearing from you and discovering out a bit more about this rolling blast from the past, cheers Shane. s1168.photobucket.com/user/Retrovanman/library/

G'day Shane, I see sgtl has directed you to the Viscount thread in our Down History Lane section but, after you troll through pages 1 to 3 you will come across mention of your very own caravan HERE which if you read it carefully will direct you to another thread HERE where your very own caravan is mentioned AGAIN ! ( depending on whether your serial # is 630 or 603 ? ) I leave it to you to analyse the information contained in those threads Cobber.

Thanks Cobber, yes I have found those threads, was a big surprise to see it on here!, its definitely the same van, I'm 100% sure, I think the 603 mentioned might of been a typo because I definitely read it 630, just added it to photobucket s1168.photobucket.com/user/Retrovanman/library/Either way glad to pick it up, like I mentioned the condition is quite amazing for its age, worst thing is slight, and I meant very slight rot on one side to the bulkhead?, (well that's what I'll call it), or panel that runs underneath the length of the front window, I will replace, besides that the whole thing is rock solid, all timber, floor etc are n fantastic condition, all paint inside is original, although there's a nice coating of smoke and grease gunk covering the paint, that's my next challenge to remove that without effecting the pretty amazing gloss and flat original finish, I was thinking of respraying but you would be hard pressed to get a better finish than it has now. The original black and white checked floor has been covered over in the 70's by a ugly print lol, will strip that and take it back to original. Besides that I'm going to replace all window rubbers, front curved windows, polish out all aluminum trims, replace or rechrome cupboard hinges etc, replace tail lights, and do something about the terrible silver frost paint that someone has gone over it with, repaint original signage etc, possible brake upgrade, by the time I do that it should be a very tidy and original van.
