G'day everyone,
The restoration of my little van is in full swing thanks to some very helpful tips from retro1 on how to replace the top part of the frame-work. The next hurdle i've been faced with is what material should I use to re-skin the side and roof? I've had a couple of quotes on marine ply, but as these are custom boards the price is out of this world! Do you think a normal exterior ply would be good enough? cheers, John

All plys are different. An external ply is made the same way as marine but it normally has faults in the matching middle ply which may trap water. The best way to check external ply in thin sheets is to hold it to the light and look for thin spots. Large sheets of ply should be joined over a solid timber brace . Custom sheets can be "scarfed" but this is way to expensive for the average restorer.External ply is okay for the sides but I would only use marine on the roof. All glues vary on cheaper plys. I hope this has helped you out Cheers retro1

Whilst we are on the topic of re-skinning and plywoods, has anybody heard of RUSTDEGATED PLYWOOD? According to the company advertising it, it "has been coated with a plastic coating on one side in a light grey colour. It holds its shape very well and is easy to work with. No painting required" Sounds almost too good to be true. I have written to the company asking for more details about it, but wondered if anyone has ever come across it? Ta Ray

Re RUSTDEGATED PLYWOOD, have heard back from the company marketing it. Unfortunately it is suitable for interior use only, nowhere near the grade of marine ply.
Adding to Retro1's comments about ply, when using external ply for the walls, it all depends on what quality of finish you want. According to the manufacturers, Austral, the best quality paint finish is definitely on the marine grade ply. It is a much closer grain ply, made from Hoop pine. Hence the better paint finish. It's very much a case of you get what you pay for. Cheers Ray

Thanks everyone, Haven't decided what to do yet but your help is muchly appreciated. One question to retro1 (again!, you may as well have done this van up yourself!) your comment about "scarf" joining is very true (expensive), is your suggestion to "butt' up the ply on the frame and then seal this join? Sorry if this seams like a dumb question, but i am a mere trumpet player that likes old vans! They didn't teach us this at the fancy pantsy music school !!

Hi John Brad and I have used 6mm exterior ply on the walls of our van and 3mm exterior ply for the roof. 2 coats of exterior undercoat and 2 coats of enamel gloss paint. the roof will probably get a 3rd coat.We hope to catch up with you in the near future on one of the runs. regards Gemma
