Thanks mel for providing those links. I will try and log into the Vintage Trailer Talk to view more interesting items. Have you tried making your own awning as yet? I'm curious as to how the home sewing machine copes with thick canvas as I am interested in doing one, plus making my own mattress/cushion covers out of thick'ish material?

Hi Bob, I have ordered some outdoor fabric for the awning, it should be delivered this week. I ordered mine from fabrictrader.com.au. The fabric is light weight and will easily sew on a domestic machine. I have ordered a tarp with a kedder strip sewn into it from econotarps. As the fabric I have ordered is water resistant and not waterproof, I plan to use the tarp under the awning. Spotlight have a range of outdoor fabrics, but the online fabric stores have a larger range to choose from.
I received a quote from my local canvas guy to make an awning with annexe sides, out of sunbrella (which is water resistant and not waterproof) he wanted to charge $3,500. To get one made by Martisawnings and sent over from America was going to cost approx. $1,500.
So far I have spent $260- on fabric (I have only ordered fabric for the awning so far, I plan to make the annex sides once I have figured out the awning) and $123- on the tarp. Anaconda sell the eye grommet kits for $10-. I have figured out what thread to use yet.
I have sewn my mattress/seat covers out of vinyl on one side and thick cotton on the other. It was hard work on my domestic machine. I used a heavy duty needle and upholstery cotton. My machine wouldn't let me use the upholstery cotton in the bobbin, so I used standard thread in the same colour.
I will let you know how I get on. I have curtains to finish before starting the awning, so it may be a while!!

My canvas man- made my awning, changed the van to rope track, altered the existing annexe to rope track & repaired a horse rug for $594. I think we ended up with 'Dickson' blind material which is waterproof & has been tested! Dickson has lots of suitable patterns but not many of them are available in Aus. ( I was quoted $1000 just for the awning by a QLD caravan restoration mob who wouldn't tell me where their material came from  )  |

Hi Sonja, I am really pleased with how mine turned out. I used a domestic machine and it struggled at times but generally coped quite well. I am on the lookout for an industrial machine for next time. People are impressed when they ask where I had my awning made and I tell them I made it myself!!  Here is one that Murray took (I don't seem to have any decent photos of it). |

Hi Mel, You should be very proud of yourself - it looks great!!!!! I love the colours too, I am thinking I will go with a sky blue type colour when I get to that on my van. Will check out your links above in regards to sourcing the canvas  Thanks, Sonja |

Also, forgot to mention that I ended up removing the rope that I had sewn on to feed into the awning rail. I ended up replacing it with a kedder strip that I ordered online. The kedder strip was easy to sew on and slides through the awing rail easily. The fabric I used is water resistant and keeps up dry in light to medium rain. I plan to try coating the fabric in a water proofing product.
