A few of us were reminiscing around the camp fire on Saturday night and the subject of past good and memorable events came up. One of the more memorable was the Museum of the Long Weekend which was held in Canberra and very well attended by forum members. We recalled that the organisers touched on the possibility of a future similar event to be held in Tasmania and I was elected to contact the organisers for an update. The following is the response received from Beth;
Hi Ken,
Lovely to hear from you.
I had a great time at Museum of the Long Weekend also!
Last year Scott (Big hART's creative director) was in conversation with the artistic director of the Tasmania Arts Festival about hosting another MOTLW as part of that festival (formerly known as Ten Days on the Island). However the festival didn't have the $$$ to put towards it, so it didn't get up - although a couple of other Big hART projects did - Acoustic Life of Sheds and Blue Angel.
I know that Scott, myself and other Big hART people feel as though there were some really great things that happened in that project that could be explored again and if the right partnering opportunity came along there is definitely the possibility that we would re-initiate something similar and get in touch.
As a company we work very hard to create projects that give voice to stories we feel Australia (and the world) needs to focus on, and raising money to fund these projects is endless tiring work. I'm not sure if you heard but the government last week made major changes to the way arts funding is channeled that will make this work even more challenging. MOTLW cost a lot of money to produce and a lot of the reason I think it went so well was the amount of time and energy dedicated by the artists/producers/production ppl working behind the scenes. The kind of producing relationship that happened with the Centenary of Canberra in 2013 made all that possible. I'm not sure at this stage if another opportunity like that currently exists - these things can be very right-place/right-time by nature. But if you guys know or hear of anything then certainly get in touch.
I hope that the many caravanners & others involved in MOTLW have taken aspects of what we created together through into other get togethers and partnerships. I hope that people will seek other ways to partner with the arts and individual artists, as through unlikely collaborations and interactions we learn a lot about each other and the world is a more interesting/richer/empathetic place!
Stay in touch and please pass on my response to the others.
