New window stays and incomplete original set.
Picture of the window stay I am after. I am after two window stays for my 1965 Valiant. I ordered two from caravans plus but have decided not to use them, as they are 1cm longer and I would have to drill new holes in my window frames to fit them. I am thinking of pulling the new ones apart and shortening the inner arm thingy? I do have the original outer sleeve and the brackets, just missing the inner arm bit and knurled nuts. I can get replacement knurled nuts from caravans plus. Would be willing to trade the two new ones for the inner arm bit, if anyone has two spare. The new window stays measure 100m from centre of knob to base of outer sleeve (as per diagram on caravans plus site).

Thanks True Blue, but that is the same as the one that I purchased that doesn't fit.

So why doesn`t it fit? Other than the screw swivel fitment lengths they appear to be basically the same. DC3TD

It is 10mm longer and I don't want to drill new holes.

G'day mel,
Your existing window stays are 90mm length, and the shortest available stay on the market today is 100mm, yes?
You can cut the sliding arm from the new stay as Gordon suggests - cut at the window end, and shorten it by 10mm, and redrill the hole. I would recommend using the new sleeves as well, but you may have to cut these to make them shorter in length to match the original sleeves. Obviously you would cut the end of the sleeve that doesn't have the bracket attached.
I would also recommend you substitute aluminium brackets for the original zinc plated brackets which are starting to go rusty. You can buy aluminium angle from Bunnings or other Hardware stores, and trace around the old brackets. See how I did it a few years ago, for the front awning on a 1977 Millard poptop here. (scroll down to the end of that post).
With a bit of time and effort, you can convert the new stays to something that will fit nicely and last many years.
cheers, Al.

Great, thanks everyone. Yes Al, the closest size I have found is 100m. I will have a go at shortening them.

Great, thanks everyone. Yes Al, the closest size I have found is 100m. I will have a go at shortening them. If you remake the brackets in aluminium you may be able to off set and lengthen the bracket, thus moving the pivot point further apart and avoid cutting the 100mm slides (neater and less chance of rusting of the cut end), as the extra length will only be a problem in the closed position.
