Canungra Showground has been a location that we’ve used for many years for our Xmas event in northern NSW/southern Q’land, usually in late November. Many people feel a great fondness for this location and want to continue going to Canungra while we still enjoy the place but out of school holidays and the heat of summer.
So for this year the idea is to have Christmas in July there, out of school holidays, and hopefully have the place almost to our selves. For those of you that haven’t been to Canungra, it’s a lovely little village west of the Gold Coast with plenty of things to do around the area, such as O’Reillys Guesthouse, Lamington Plateau, wineyards, hot air ballooning etc etc.
Details are:
Camping at Canungra Showgrounds, fires, dogs allowed, normally $25/night/couple powered site, but they will do Group rate of $22/night. No need to book with caretaker, just post in this thread or let me know you’re coming and pay me when you’re there to get Group rate. The caretaker has reserved an area up the top, but really there won’t be anyone there except for us so we can pick & choose spots.
Xmas Dinner in July at Canungra Hotel on Saturday 18 July $22/person, is the cost for a set dinner of roast turkey & ham, roast & steamed vegetables, plum pudding, tea/coffee/bonbons in the dining room with open fireplace. Hotel has courtesy bus that will pick us up from/to Showgrounds! We will definitely need numbers for dinner in advance for the dinner so PM/email me if you want to be on the list as I need to confirm numbers of people by end June.
Friday night will most likely be camp ovens or stews, as this is definitely the time of year to have a nice big fire with a wagon train of vans!

Looks like it's going to be a good turnout for this event. 17 vans booked in for this one so far. If I don't hear any differently, I'll assume everyone wants to come to dinner? OK? smiles

Hi all
2 course meals are $10 for kids & adults $22 so I've booked in 34 adults, 4 kids so far. Hotel is happy to have final numbers a week before 18 July. They have booked us in for 5.30-6.00pm. Courtesy bus will probably take us there in 2 runs & back again.
Any thoughts from people on whether we want a shared or individual camp oven roast or stew night on Friday night? Obviously we will have a nice big fire so contribute your thoughts guys! Last year we did our own thing near the fire, I recall Julie etc carving up roasts on Steve's work ute back with people shining torches. It all worked out well with a brilliant meal rounded out by Trev & Julie's dessert. Now that's real vintage camping! Cathie

Hi Cathie,Looks like a good roll up for Canungra. Friday night dinner?? My suggestion just leave it open for people to do their own thing,But in saying that we always enjoy a camp oven roastie, cannot waste the coals hey.
So either bring food to share or be individual,a good time will still be had by all.
Hope your wrist on the mend.
Cheers Sue.

Hi all
A few additions minus a few going to Stockton (have fun Boblor & Steve) so that makes our numbers up to 19 vans including 4 kids.
If anyone else wants to come , just let me know up until about 11-12 July.
We'll get to Canungra Friday morning with Overland so Rob will throw some wood on back of ute & light a fire. Not the ute silly! Hopefully we can get a nice warm fire close to everyone's vans without risk to bond woods! Rob will bring 12volt chainsaw in case we need to scavenge for extra wood. One year we got good flood wood out of the creek bank.
Yep so sounds as though we will do our own thing dinner wise on Friday night but I'm betting on it being near the fire. Rob n I plan on taking a small roast & camp oven. smiles

Hi Cathie Would love to spend the weekend at Canungra but can only get one day off. I would like to bring my 1938 Morris 8/40 and Teardrop van up for the display day. Which is the best day if this is possible please ? Need to do a test run before I send the "rig" to New Zealand in January for a rally and a month's touring. Hope to be back for the Nationals in 2016. Regards Syd Norman (Morrie and Midge)

Hi Syd
Saturday is probably best day for a day visit. You know the story, Friday for coming, Sat for staying & Sunday for going!
I've confirmed our Sat night Xmas in July dinner booking for 38 adults, 4 kids. Booking is 5.30 for 6.00. Looks like 16 seater courtesy bus will be making 3 trips.
I also just talked to Showground Manager. We can have an open fire on grass up the top flat near vans as long as it's in a drum on top of bricks so grass doesn't get burnt. Manager will supply bricks So Rob will bring a 44gal drum bottom for the fire. Rob will bring some wood but it would be great if others could throw in a bag of wood too.
Jean wants to make 2 baking dishes of apple crumble for dessert + Custard for Friday night. She wants to know if other people have larger microwaves to reheat the dessert? Could you post on here if you do? I've got a whole pumpkin that screams out "soup me up" so that will be my contribution to Friday night dinner! So if everyone else decides to do their own thing on Friday night, that's fine! The 4 of us can have soup & dessert! Cheers Cathie
