hi all on the 4th of march this year, fair trading issued a warning for those very handy "lunchbox" gas cookers that most of us have or have used for camp cooking - the warning covers all brands, including some very well known camping suppliers. there's probably thousands of them out there, i know we have at least three of them, but they're now considered unreliable and dangerous. here's the link to the fair trading warning: www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/Consumers/Product_and_service_safety/Lunchbox_cookers.page?geoff 'n jude

Interesting information, GnJ. Makes me wonder how the initial approval process happens. It would appear they don't actually test the appliance before granting approval, and leave it to the poor ol' unsuspecting public to tell them there's a problem. I also now wonder whether we'll still be able to get the butane canisters here in NSW, once the stoves are taken off the market. I have an ignition torch, for lighting briquettes, which fits on those canisters. cheers, Al.

I have one of these stoves i.e. the Campmaster CN2270 which is now banned on this list. I've used one of these on a daily basis for over four years now and have found them safe and reliable. I hope they release a new "safe" model soon as they're so handy.

hi again all we just received this notice in an email from coleman's. so if you throw your old one away it can be replaced confidently with one of these. note that coleman uses propane not butane so your old cylinders may not be suitable. geoff 'n jude

G'day GnJ, I think that media release from Coleman is rather misleading. You could easily get the impression that Coleman sell the type of stove being banned here in NSW, but that their particular model runs on propane and not butane cylinders. I've had a look at the Coleman Australia website, and there are no stoves that resemble the banned type, at least that I could find. I did find a Coleman stove listed on the Walmart US website but it uses butane cylinders, not propane. So, I guess Coleman are right in saying their stoves sold in Oz are for the propane cylinders, but they are not the same stoves that are the subject of the ban. Therefore, any other stove supplier who sells camping stoves, that use other fuels, could also issue the same type of media release if they wanted to allay the fears of the buying public. It's just that we don't seem to be comparing apples with apples. cheers, Al.

(not sure about the u bit). geoff 'n jude

Just to add to the confusion I have been using this cooker in my TD and no problems ever but then I do tend to read the instructions. The danger is only there if too big a pot/pan/BBQ plate is put on it and the canister then gets overheated and will explode. While using it in the correct manner the canister gets colder as its used so used correctly there is no problem. I guess the old saying is true ....make something idiot proof and they will create better idiots. As for the canisters don't worry they will be around a long time as many other items like the heat bead igniter are still ok to use. Pete
