Hello all, This is my first post. I love this board! I am a big fan of vintage caravans as everybody on here is. I have been looking at a few different models to buy. I particularly like some of the NZ vintage caravans such as the Crusader, Caravalle, Concorde and Starliner models. I like the large windows which allow a lot of light in.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in importing a vintage caravan from NZ? What was the experience?
Cheers, Chrissie

hi the reason for the large front and rear windows on nz vans is that they follow the same basic design rules as the british vans - ie. the driver must be able to clearly see following traffic through the van when looking into the rear view mirror of the tow vehicle. (it's covered in british caravan design - 1953, rule 138, section 5, subsections a, d and e. (although i might have just made that last bit up. )) geoff 'n jude

Definitely love the Concorde vans. It is rumoured that they copied (and improved) the Sunliner shape.

"I reckon those Kiwi vans have got big windows coz when they're eating there fush and chups and enjoying plenty of puss in the frudge, they can enjoy the view ....."
This is hillbilly 's explanation for big windows.

Hi Geoff 'n Jude, The reason you mention for the size of front and rear windows of NZ vans has been referred to on the forum a number of times, however some time ago I discussed it with an NZ caravan dealer and V V tragic who used to be a member of the forum. She told me that she had never heard of such a design rule and that she thought it was an urban myth in Australia. Her belief was that the size of the windows on NZ vans (as opposed to UK vans) was purely stylistic. Of course I don't know whether the caravan dealer I corresponded with knew what she was talking about or not, but she and her husband had been involved in the NZ caravan industry for a number of years, so quite possibly was correct. I wonder if anyone has a copy of the aforesaid NZ design rules, and in particular a rule referring to the need to see through the van? Don Ricardo

Definitely love the Concorde vans. It is rumoured that they copied (and improved) the Sunliner shape. Atog G'day ATOG, True, at this point we don't have the "smoking gun" in the form of a statement or contract to prove that Concord used the Sunliner molds to build their vans...but if you look at the earliest Concords (1967) here they are almost identical (externally at least) with the last of the Sunliners. On that basis it seems almost certain to my mind that the Concords were birthed out of Sunliners, and it fits the Sunliner business model where Bert Tickner licensed various other people to build Sunliners or Sunliner variants. Hi Chrissie05, Importing caravans into Australia from overseas - NZ elsewhere - can apparently lead to a number of problems. If you decide to go that way - and I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't if you wish - there is an article in the latest edition of Vintage Caravans Magazine on this exact topic that you may want to read before you get too far into the process. It lists some very useful tips. Don Ricardo
