Hi guys, hard to tell really , because our research of the pre war Don caravans hasn't yet revealed the year by year build numbers. However, it would definately be pre war (pre 1939) Give me a call or PM me if you want to discuss further.... or sell it, Mark 0427251204

Hi Chenzo and Kingswood308, Welcome to the forum to both of you. How amazing to hear from you both about early Don caravans on the same day. As a person with a special interest in Dons, each of your posts immediately drew my attention! We know that the Don with serial number 30 was built in 1936. On that basis Chenzo's parents' van with the serial number 29 could also reasonably be assumed to have been built in 1936. If number 30 was built right at the beginning of 1936 then number 29 might have been built in 1935, but on balance I reckon 1936 is a pretty safe bet. Regarding Kingswood308's van, Don began building vans in 1934. The first van was originally put together for the builder's father, but then sold to someone else. We don't know when Don started full commercial production, or what their production rate was at the beginning. But knowing that number 30 was built at some point in 1936, I'll guess that number 16 was built in 1935 (ie half way between 1934 and 1936). If you want to be a bit safer you could say 1935/36. I'm sure that quite a number of people on the forum would love to hear the story of your vans, and to see some photos, if either or both of you would like to tell us more. I've sent you both a PM (Personal Message) via the forum. By the way, I think you've probably both found the thread on the history of Don caravans in the 'Down History Lane' section, but if not click on this link. Don Ricardo

Its a bit confusing all the numbers and build dates. All ours needs is a light sand back and repaint in its original colours, which is being done as we speak. Of course new tyres and bearings suspension checks.

G'day Chenzo,
Great to see the pics of your parents' Don. Nice new water tank I can see, or has it just been polished somehow?
Don usually put two small rectangular brass serial number plates on their vans. They first was located on the external kerbside wall of the van, adjacent to the left hand bottom corner of the door. The second was located internally on the wall above the stove alcove.
Let us know if you're able to find either one or both. If I haven't explained clearly enough, I can post some photos to show you where to look.

Hi Chenzo, No need to apologise. All of us find that we get a bit hazy about details that long ago, but It's good to know the actual serial number. I don't have my Don records with me at the moment, but off the top of my head I would estimate the build date of your parents' Don with the serial number 381 would be 1948. So, post war, but pre-50's, and around about 67 years old. I gather your parents bought the van new? Don Ricardo
