Kaybee I will happily bow to your knowledge on the brakes, the FE, FC's seemed to have better brakes. Maybe Dad's brakes worked better than mine cause he travelled slower ;D It's a long time since I have driven either one so it's likely my memory is playing tricks.
One place where the later Holdens were better is power, FJ = 60 hp, FE = a whopping 68 hp with a 6.8/1 comp. ratio (I think) which went to 72hp with the later FC's and 75hp with the FB thru EJ. Greg

Groovy says: "One place where the later Holdens were better is power....".......statistically yes, practically ......no ...... The FX/FJ will outpower an FE/FC anyday ......better power to weight ratio ......and the FE/FC brakes are just soooooooo horrible ....what brakes The FX/FJ brakes aren't any better, but at least they have less weight to stop!!! How many FE/FC's did we see on the racetracks of Aus, compared with x's & j's Fe/Fc's in standard spec are basically a slug ......but I lov'em ....got two !!! Mark

Hi All, Been out snoop'n again and found four vans on the one property, of which two would be classed as vintage. the bondy has an unusual roof on it being some sort of fabric (not canvas) and it is held in place with half round timber strips, the van also has no back window. The property is some type of retreat and the vans appear to be used for sleeping quarters, when i arrived there was'nt anyone home so may head back again today. Note-- Get in your electricity meter readers ear and offer him a carton of beer for every old van he comes across on his travels and sit back and wait for results, works a treat Kingy

Hi All, Well here we go again, another spots been taken up in the shed with the addition of another BONDY ( does that cheer you up a little Reddo) I towed it home this morning, parked it, took some photo's, then got a headache thinking of where i'm going to start so i'm not looking at it again till tomorrow. I have some photos i took ages ago and put in under van hunting. Its a superlite by brand (50 years old) 12 ft x 6ft 6'' and believe me it's truly superlite, mainly due to the single skinned walls & roof. It has never been fitted with any form of refrigeration and is a really roomy van. The old guy i bought it off is the original owner and he fitted it out himself being only a rolling shell when he bought it. I will send pics shortly of the inside etc. Cheers Kingy

Hi All, Here's the photos of our latest addition i mentioned. I've been right over it and found it to be in great condition with no rot or water damage,( unlike our original bondy) At this stage we'll probably restore it inside and out and sell it , all depends on the finished result i suppose. ( hey Reddo did you say you had an ice box some time back thats for sale?, still amuses me that the vans never had any means of keeping the beer cold ) Cheers Kingy The extraction,of the vans home for the last 50+ yrs [

Attaboy kingy Another bondy bought out of the darkness. I was beginning to feel like a traitor and it appeared to be that due to my thoughtless actions of retrieving a Sunliner there was gunna be a surplus supply of f#br@glass vans in the vint van group. But you have tipped the scales back to bondwood supremacy. To reward you for your efforts I have organised an official ceremony at which at gummimint house where the PM will present you with of my AVBPS endorsed "Plywood Hunter" belt buckles and a magnificent framed picture of an aluminium van .........riddled with bullet holes She looks like a good resto proposition old mate. Already have a green one... will this one be king parrot red or just red topper. I take it you will be shopping for another shed or carport shortly. Oh bye the way. you missed the ice chest by one week. i sold it to fbmad ( terry and grum) last weekend. Will keep the eyes open for anothery for you. Harold Steptoe... Nevertiring crusader for truth , justice and Bondwood caravans...... Pres of ABVPS (Australian Bondwood Van Preservation Society) ...... and collector of Aluminium RSL drinks trays. The way i see it......If there is a shortage of the raw product then there can be no more aluminium vans aye!!! hmmmmm .....where do they mine fibreglass

Those couplings were very common in the fifties, most of them were replaced by the mid sixties due to the change in regs. Greg

Howdy All, Had a guy i do some work for me put me onto this 64 sunliner which i had a look at today and was told by the elderly owner that it will be coming on the market but not just yet. It would be a great restorer with very little work needed. It runs on volvo rims (14'') and apparantly has been converted to leaf springs. (what's the original setup ) The van is still registered but has'nt been used for four years. waiting waiting waiting Kingy

hi kingy
that's a pretty fine looking 64.
nice straight body (no apparent warping), i'm interested if it's going to sell for a reasonable price.
(by the way, i'm impressed with the number of contacts you have re old vans, more postie pointers i presume.)

Hi Geoff, Re. the contacts on vans, believe me it still surprises me the amount of vans that turn up through what is mainly word of mouth. Living in a small country town (pop. 7000) helps a lot i feel, since my bondy has been on the road behind the EH people just seem to come out of the woodwork with stories of where there is or was a van that they have seen at some stage. The fact that the area is also a holiday destination on the coast means a few are scattered around on holiday propertys etc. I've come across a lot more vans that have'nt been shown here also. This sunliner come from Sydney only 4-5 years ago so someone may recognise it. It's the old fella's fourth glass van, 2 olympics & 2 sunliners- that probarly contributed to his health problems i'd say ;D. and it's because of his health he's concidering selling. So that makes it three vans now i'm waiting to hear back from. Hope they don't all ring at once Kingy

I am also interested in the Sunliner if Geoff&Jude don't want it, although it would be a long trip from Brissy, anyone know whay type of cost it would be to at least get it to East Maitland?
Cheers
Corey
P.S Good work Kingy, keep up the good work, and sens some of these up North!!!!

Hi Cory, It's anyones guess how long it will be before the sunliner comes on the market, it seems the elderly owner ( mid seventys )is going to see if his health problems are going to improve (he rattled off a few) before he sells, could be tomorrow, could be next year Cheers kingy

G'day Kingy,
You're right - the van you discovered does have a passing resemblance to the 1934 to 1955 Dons, particularly from the front. However, there are a number of differences - proportions and silhouette of the rear end, location of the axle, placement of the door and windows, layout of the galley and construction of the overhead cupboards, not to mention the construction of the windows.
All the same, there are enough similarities that I did wonder if the builder used a Don as his template? Maybe not. Perhaps somebody else on the forum can identify the source of the design or the maker.
Don Ricardo
PS How is Moruya at this time of year? We received an email from our favourite little spot at Tuross Head offering some winter specials. Sounds tempting, but unfortunately we've got too much on!

Hi Don, Like you say, van may have taken ideas from the DON design, when i first saw it, front on, a DON was the first thing that come to mind. Hows Moruya this time of year you say, MAGIC, best time of the year weatherwise, winter seems to have taken holidays. I still have vivid memories of Melbournes winters, spent the first 32 years there (Essendon) Was offered a job up here, and arrived two days later ;D ;D Next time Tuross calls give us a yell and we'll talk timber Kingy

Hi All, Have just received an email re. this van i showed some time back and the owner is still keen to sell. He lives in Canberra, but van is located near Narooma on the coast. If anyone is interested i can pass on his details The van is quite sound and does'nt need any major work. I'd certainly like it for myself, but i'll be concerntrating on what i have at the moment - for some time yet. [ Cheers Kingy [/quote]

Hi All, Tracked down this little number (11'6'') an hour Nth. of home, and its a little beauty, some slight changes inside, but very neat and tidy. it's had an alloy sheet placed over roof, and a new inner ceiling replaces the old ,and it's been VERY well done. it's also got a huge hatch. The gizzards for the fridge are under the seat, it can also be used as an icebox. Van is registered, packed and ready to go - but has'nt been used for years The windows are very similar to the way supalite made theirs, but the brand is unknown I think this van would make an excellent Chrissy present for me Santa, you know where i live Kingy
