Well I am doing really good so far, I have moved on and am now on a soft food diet, custards, yogurts, ice creams and the like will hopefully start puréed food today or tomorrow and maybe home by Midweek, I am now walking around on my own so I no longer have to carry the nurses, this morning before breakfast I think I did about 12 laps, off for a nice shower now so will call back later.

Thank you franni, I have met only a handful of members also but here on the forum we are one big happy family, I have just now had my surgeon come visit me and provided everyone else is happy I should be going home tomorrow.

Hi Derk,
Well the hard bit is behind you now. Time heals most things I believe, & you just have to take it one day at a time. Before you know it you will be feeling much better.
All the best

Good to see you back on the road to recovery Derk. At least you live in a nice area for a peaceful recovery. Just don't let the neighbours bother you too much! Oh, I just remembered, she's a nurse!! Ya gotta keep on her good side!!
All the best

Hello all, well been a little over a week now that I've been home and feeling better all the time other than sleep which eludes me, still have a bit of tenderness where the two large drain tubes were so it keeps me awake, can only get an hour or two at a time plus a few nanna naps during the day helps. Eating isn't to bad either but have to be carefull I don't over do it or I pay the price till it settles which isn't fun, even a cup of tea can be to much but other wise I'm doing good, can drive the car okay and have even had the FJ out and about, may even go to a car show Sunday to get some sun and fresh air.

Saw my surgeon this afternoon and he could not have been happier, pathology said that it was an aggressive tumor (7 cms in size) with some nasties involved but all the margins were clear and there was no evidence of migration to any lymph nodes so all is good, next step is to see the oncologist next week to organize some follow up chemo.

Just another update for those who are interested, saw my Surgeon last week, he took one look at me and said " I don't know what you are doing but keep doing it and come back and see me in June" have started my next round of chemo but in hindsight I would rather not have started, I feel like absolute crap, but as they say "no pain no gain"

Well here I am again with another update, had the last lot of Chemo yesterday and now just have another 21 day cycle of tablets left to endure, today I feel like complete crap but am hoping it will get better from hereon out, got stronger anti nausea drugs but they don't seem to be doing to much but time will tell.

G'day Dirk, So much of the medication we have to take has unpleasant side effects, but usually it does also do the job it is meant to do. Now that the chemo is finished I hope the tablets work with minimum side effects..... hang in there, you've been doing it tough and I feel for you ...... look forward to seeing you back working on vintage caravans, and going places in them Cobber.

Okay, so further to my last update where I was suffering nausea, it got worse, to the point I took myself back to hospital for three days to get over it, this helped and I saw my oncologist the following thursday where he told me to stop any further tablets I had and I just went forward in leaps and bounds from there, I have now been back at work full time for about two months now and it is all good, I went to see my surgeon on the 1st of June and he was pleased with how I was going, he asked when I next saw the oncologist which is on the 2nd of September, he said fine come back and see me in December, so there you have it, my weight is sitting steady around 81-82 kg but my stamina is not yet back, I find I can only manage a few hours at a time when the work get to heavy so most things are taking a lot longer to complete but I'm hoping it will get better with time.

Hi Derk,
Stick with it mate. The problem is that medication is a lot of guesswork on the doctors behalf.
I recently found myself having breathing difficulties, & went to the Doctor. With my local surgery you have to wait up to 6 weeks to get to the doctor of your choice, but sometimes you can get lucky & get in sooner if you have an immediate problem
So I got to see a doctor I knew, & found my heart rate was very low. But I was on a tablet (for about 10 years) to lower my heart rate. Stopped taking it, & guess what, I went back to normal. Now they are talking about putting me on a pacemaker, which I dont like the idea of. I have heard that I wouldn't be able to weld or use electric motors.
I dont have a lot of faith in doctors most of the time, so I guess I have to go back to the Cardiac specialist, who told me a couple of months ago I was going so good that he didnt need to see me for 2 years. Go figure.
I guess the options to doctors isn't that brilliant

G'day JBJ, yes you are right in that Doctors are still learning themselves but they can only work with what they have at their disposal every day they learn something new, my Surgeon has done three more ops like mine since he did me, with me he went in through my back, the next two he did was both keyhole and an incision through the neck and the last he did completely keyhole so even he is still learning after having done god knows how many of these Ivor Lewis jobs, but all is good so I no complain

Hello all, just a quick update on my health, working full time now with no problems and have spent the last 2 weekends out in my shed with plans to do the same this weekend, I have been doing a little work on my Panel van resto and am hoping to maybe take a closer look at the Roadcruiser to determine a plan of attack when time permits.
