Hi , my 69 viscount valiant has a custom built steel tool box at the front, a 9 litre gas bottle and a spare tyre. The nose weight is about 125 kg- which is ridiculous for a 10 ft van. I didn't add the toolbox itself, it is very useful, but I can't legally tow the van with my car ( nose weight 70) . . I have a couple of questions. Does the modifiCation make any insurance claim invalid? What so you think the caravan noseweight on this van should be? If I put the spare tyre on the back and got a 4ltre gas tank, do you think it would make any difference to the weight...and lastly, should I remove the box? ( can't afford a range rover) - any thoughts appreciared.

Hicaboodle. General rule of thumb for nose weight ( or ball weight) is approx. 10% of the mass of the van. So I guess you'd be aiming for about 60kg. Redistributing the weight by relocating the spare wheel and downsizing the gas bottle will help. You may also be able to shift other items around in the van a bit ( from front to rear ) to assist with weight distribution. Just use a set of basic bathroom scales to measure any difference. Unsure on the insurance query. Might have to ask your insurance company? Maybe you could thin the toolbox out a bit and carry less/lighter items in it. If you cant get reasonably close to your desired ball weight, I'd be giving the toolbox the flick. Sutcac.

Thanks very much Sutcac for that information. Im thinking i'll be giving the box the flick, handy as it is. Does anyone want to buy a steel toolbox?
