I hope some-one has had experience with these before. Van is a 1961 Millard....the clearance lights etc appear to be earthed to the aluminium body of the van.....surely not!!

That's fairly standard for the old aluminium vans, humpty2. The earth lead from the car/tow plug goes to the nearest light (usually a clearance light), and the rest of the 12V lights rely on the aluminium cladding to provide the earth return. Works great until you get corrosion building up behind light fittings, and suddenly the screws no longer make good contact, and you get one or more lights no longer working. That's why I always encourage people on the forum who are dismantling/stripping aluminium vans back to the shell, to seriously think about putting in dedicated earth leads to every 12V light fitting, and to make sure the earth wiring leads back to the tow plug. Some of the aluminium Franklin models don't even have an earth lead going from the van to the tow plug. The one earth lead from the van goes to the chassis under the van, and then it's up to the safety chains and/or coupling to complete the circuit from the van back to the car. I think they call the process "cost cutting"... cheers, Al.

I was hoping that you would see this post Al. Will be rewiring with dedicated earth to each light using 7 core (I love electric brakes!) Thanks for the info Al.
