Spotted this one a few weeks ago and did a deal with the owners who referred to it as the 'Jellybean' Finally got the chance to pick it up today. No name so may be a home build ?? Will be a project at some stage but not till later in the year. It was parked where it was for about 21 years and we had to remove fencing and a small brick wall to get it out. Anyway just wanted to show a couple of pictures for those of us that enjoy some show & tell. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

I did a quick check today but could find no sign of a vin number or a name. It did still have the pencil marks and some calculations on the outside of the van to indicate where to mount the windows and to place the rivets. Perhaps when I strip it down I may find more info. Oddly I never realized till today that it was not equipped with either a space for a fridge/icebox or for any kind of oven or cooktop. When the time comes I hope to show some update pics. Cheers

Gday Aza. She`d look very nice polished up.You can see results of such in Tech section - 'polishing aluminium'.Somewhere in the Members Photo section are pics of Willyns Airstream & most recently theres a pic or two of another Airstream at the Lane Cove gathering which will show (if thats what you`d like)just how shiny a `van can look. gordon

I wondered if those with more knowledge than myself might know what the rims are from on this van ? It may help me with an idea of the age of the van too. They are 15inch and have 3 bullet style lugs on each rim. Im hoping to re-use then but Im not sure if they are any good still. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Well I finally made a start on this van today. First I must say... I don't believe I have the ability to attempt the kind of restorations I have seen on this forum. It is amazing how much some people can do and their ability to do such a great job as well ! As you can see this van suffered very bad bore water staining. My thinking is to clean all the cladding first and then I hope to strip all the cladding down to see what repairs are required on the frame etc. Some of the aluminium sheeting has come away in some places because the old rivets have let go and from messing around a little I have a funny feeling that re-aligning all the sheets, if and when the frame is repaired, may not be as easy as I think. Time will tell I guess. Anyway here are a few pictures of the acid clean I started today. I tried a few cleaning ideas first and im sure there are some I didn't try but this stain is so bad that acid was all that would remove it. Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Well you`ve certainly made a great start to your resto Aza.The choice now is to paint or polish eh.As for removing the sheets - photo & chalk mark/numbered strips of masking tape.Don`t texta the outer side! Fortuneatly there are flat mouldings for the panels & J mould for the edges which will cover the existing holes & allow you to drill new holes.Just know where not to drill once you`ve removed the cladding. When you`re happy with how it should all go back together hire an air rivet gun.Check all the wiring/power points once the cladding is off & redo as a matter of safety & convenience.Nothing worse than having to trace or reroute once its all together. Our parts suppliers list almost whatever is required. gordon

Thanks for the tips Gordon, I hope I don't make a mess of it when I strip it down. Although the aluminium looks much better once cleaned from the stains it does show up all the marks and imperfections. However I don't think I will paint or polish the van. Im hoping that some new trimmings such as lights etc may direct away from the imperfections and still leave the van looking its age. I really want to keep the original aluminium look. What do you think ?? Murray this is the acid wash I am using. I did not water it down but its a good idea to keep applying the acid to the area you are working on to keep it working and to prevent it from drying and possibly staining. Attachment Deleted

Gday Aza.Although a sheety by trade (coach builder) for the last thirty + years have been doing auto detailing & up to about 10 or so years ago when i owned & ran one of the biggest detailing shops on sydneys parramatta rd i used Opal Mag Wheel cleaner (Girraween based company).Totally lethal, smelt like cows p*** but anything from mag wheels/ali tray sides/concrete workshop floor was a breeze.Like any of these hazardous products one can never be too careful in how they`re & you use them.My teardrop (see the avatar pic) was 2k`d some years ago.Not something i personally would have done though suited a previous owners desire.Eventually will remove paint & machine buff.Being 60 something years old it too even through the paint shows the little dings/dents etc & even polished up will still do so but thats just how it is.I would think your van was originally polished.See the Carapark brand pics when they were built.Anyways keep up the good work. gordon
