Make sure all lights work including number plate light. Have weight of caravan (not necessary to produce weigh ticket in most cases!). Have a receipt or proof of ownership. Pick up the appropriate paperwork from VicRoads, make an appointment. They will measure it, check your lights & coupling & paperwork & you're done!

Good point Hughdeani. Do the reflectors have to be specific colours for each end?

When we took our van to vicroads to re register it, I took great care in getting all paper work correct but they found that the chassis number was being used by another van!? So they provided me with a new "R" chassis number to have stamped on it. Went to the mechanic around the corner, had it stamped (cost $50), then had to make another appointment and start again!!

G'day folks, Now.... remember I am only referring to unmodified caravans that you want to present in that way. If you modified the van the authorities are not interested in helping you maintain it's originality and can insist you put all the bells and whistles on it that modern vans have. OK... my reading of the Victorian regulations pertaining to vans built before 1991, and in some cases 1973 indicate you only need white reflectors on the front of a van if it is over 2.2 metres in width ( 8 (c) ) otherwise you only have to have two red reflectors at the rear. It's interesting to read the 'note' at the bottom of 8 (d) Also Interesting to read the NSW regulations where no mention is made of white reflectors. Needless to say, you might have to stand on your dig if you want to stick to 'original' to this extent otherwise.... just put white reflectors on the front and red reflectors on the rear. If I've interpreted the regulations incorrectly straighten me out, I've got broad shoulders and a thick hide Cobber.

Going to get a roadworthy for a vintage caravan is like picking lotto numbers sometimes you win , sometimes you lose! But one things for sure you never know exactly what the outcome is and it seems to change everywhere you go? ?? My experience so far has been a bit bizarre as things like brakes and tow couplings were not even mentioned but I needed a electrical compliance certificate ( I'm a sparky , and it turns out by the standard all I need to do is double pole switches in 240v socket outlets and light switches otherwise original wiring can stay as manufacturer installed it. Of course insulation resistance measurements must comply!) Here's the clincher .... The important things were: The model number on plate riveted to chassis needs to be stamped on the actual drawbar. The Caravan had to have fixed cooking facilities to be classed as a " caravan" ( no gas so original metho cooker is ok) Reflectors are to be placed on the front and rear on the sides (eye height ) ?? Go figure

I am going in to register my 1960 viscount next week in dromana, VIC. So thanks for advice and I will let you know how it goes. I have stamped new R no onto drawbar (for pre 89 vans) and have rewired it but no sparkie to give compliance cert. I know the TARE but hope I don't need a weigh bridge ticket.

Hi Viscount 60, dont forget those reflectors! Also you will need a weighbridge ticket, get it from the camping shop just near the freeway overpass on the way to rego. Dont worry about sparkie ticket, they have never asked me for one in the past,or last week.Dont forget the permit to take van on road either. Best of luck. Cheers hughdeani

When we registered Bessie it was too easy. 1. Weighbridge docket 1040kg 2. Appointment for an inspection 3. Ring vic roads and get a vin no. And stamped onto draw bar. 4. Inspection on the day checked vin and length and lights only. 4. Was asked what the gross weight was and answered 1700kq (which is now recorded on the rego) 5. Paid money and recieved plates. No electrical or gas checks or even a look inside or underneath...

No problems with registering my Viscount 60 with weighbridge docket and red reflectors at vicroads dromana. He just measured it and checked lights all working. It's been off the road for over a decade so the girl is legal now!

I wont tell you how easy mine was it would make you all cry. 1. Weigh bridge ticket 2. NSW Blue slip.. easy as. As I asked what about gas, elec, reflectors all he said was all ok van was pre compliance. 3. RMS had issues with the chassis number but that was there system. 4. Walked out with plates. It all took about 2 hours......... Are you all crying now

Yes it only took me 15 mins here in Vic as it's "pre 1989. To answer hughdeani's query, it's TARE at weighbridge was 1000kg, a little more than the 130cwt or 850kg that the original 1960 Viscount brochure said. Must be the battery and bigger drawbar I put on it.

Didn't think you would have any problems with rego in vic. Ours took about 15min too after 25+ years unregistered. Congrats on getting her tagged and legal.
