Was fiddling in the van today checking things over before the big trip to Broken Hill and places further afar and noticed that one of the three nuts which holds the roof hatch shut was loose. I tried to tighten it but closer examination revealed that the thread was worn away to the point that with a bit of wiggling I could remove the nut completely from the bolt without turning it. Further examination shows that the other two holding the hatch are also worn but not as badly as this one. Obviously I am pleased to find this potential problem now rather than losing the hatch out the back of Broken hill somewhere. Fortunately I had a spare and was able to complete the repair but it made me wonder how many others have this potential problem lurking within their van............it may be a good idea to check before you next take the van out for a trip. The nut should be tight on the thread with no perceptible movement and new ones are available for purchase.
Looking Forward to Broken Hill......4 weeks till we head off.

I nearly had my hatch blow off the day I purchased my van. Luckily it was just flapping in the breeze and bent the hinges. I tightened the nuts and hatch, felt ok before leaving but shit happens. I boarded the roof up and put the bent steel hatch inside.
I'm just glad I carry my tools when on a road trip.

We lost ours on the drive home after the purchase. Newbie owners don't know these things! But we never ever forget it now!

Yes we lost ours on a trip from QLD to Tassy. It was on our 68 Viscount Ambassador; wasn't the bolts though, it was the fact that the previous owner had repaired the framework with chipboard; not a smart move in an area that gets damp. Didn't know until we arrived in Victoria in the afternoon. A foldup table with a tarp wrapped around it was the roof for the night, then off to Bunnings to buy bits to fix a temp hatch for balance of the trip. I had 4 hours to get it finished before getting on the ferry for Tassy. The temp hatch held for the balance of the trip thankfully. Cheers \OZ
