SOME TIME AGO I PUT A POST HERE ABOUT A TYRE THAT FLEW APART ON MY VAN THIS TIME IT IS ON ONE OF MY TOW CARS , Some of you will already know how to date a tyre ,but fort those who do not here it is again ,Below is a picture of a tyre that i got from Antique Tyre Melb , when i ordered the tyres the sales guy told me the tyres would not be more than 6 months old from the date of manufacture , in the photo you can see 0712 ( this will be on all tyres ,but may be on only one side of the tyre ) that is the 7th week in 2012 , easy isn't it . not happy . these were 18 months old when i got them . I have just ordered more tyres but from another supplier . if you do not do many miles you need to buy new ,new tyres not the ones that have been in the shelf for a year or two ,it seems that they have a life of around 6-7 years . this just happened when the car was parked ,the tyre was 9 years old ..it was still holding air , good luck ,, kel.

Hi Kel
Yup... you would think that something that has done bugger all miles would be good for a damn long time.. I am guessing that the wire used in the tyres ( or tires if you are from the US of A) has corroded and forces lamination of the tread. Either that or the load rating of the tyre is below that recommended for what you are using them on???
Apart from all that.. rubber just aint rubber anymore !!!
Was at Nabiac Motorcycle museum the other week. Bloke was getting around ewery bike with a portable compressor inflating tyres on bikes that he had checked 2 weeks earlier.. Reason?? .. He reckons that the compound in the new tubes allows air through them.. not the valves leaking. Probably explains why cars went tubeless.. Yes .. I know bikes are tubeless too nowadays.. but the issue shows up with old bikes with spoked steel wheels running tubes .. not alloy /magnesium wheels
