Has anybody heard of/used a product called 'Sylglas waterproofing tape'? I had ordered some Denso tape but what has turned up is not the same as what I used on the Viscount. Black one is what I used previously (not enough left to do whole vsn) Brown gelatinous looking one is what's arrived today. Are there any other products recommended that might be available in a hardware or plumbing shop? It is to go under the J mould. Thanks, SGTL

G'day sgtl, That's pretty interesting. When I did a bit of a search on the internet, it seems the two products are related: Sylglas - Denso tapeFrom what I can see on the web, the Sylglas tape would be quite satisfactory for use under the J-mould. I know when I dismantled my 1956 Franklin van, every joint in the exterior plywood was covered with a strip of cotton webbing impregnated with some sort of sticky brown substance. I never did find out what it was, but maybe it was a Denso type of tape... A timber cover strip was nailed over the top of the waterproof tape, and the joints were in very good condition when I pulled the tape off a few years ago, which was approx 50 years after it was applied. I would think that if Sylglas has been making tape since 1958, they must be doing something right. cheers, Al.

Just for interest when I was doing some work in process control many years ago now, we occasionally used denso tape, which was exactly like the one pictured on the bottom roll. It was the most sticky stuff you could ever imagine, worse than putting your hand in a bucket of slugs. It was used to wrap around pipes, cable entries, etc.. to keep them water tight. From what I was told at the time it is made up of pig fat which is why it is quite soft and sticky. When wrapped around a pipe the sticky fat can be smoothed out to form a watertight cocoon layer.

So happy to find this thread. We are just about to put the roof and j molding back on our bondwood van. When I was sanding the van I did notice this tape like substance and I thought that it was just glue but after seeing this I realize that it must have been this tape. We are doing a canvas roof and I was wondering if the tape should go under the canvas or over the top? Also can anyone recommend which tape is better for use on bondwood?
