After doing Fisher's Resto we have now finished our '59 Homebuilt vintage van called Bessie we're now contemplating where to put pictures of our travels. Eventually I decided to start a new thread here. Unfortunately I have got a bit behind as we have been out on four trips in Bessie so far. The first trip which I am calling trip zero was when she was hitched up for the first time after about 30 years and driven to the weigh bridge for weighing. I've also included the quick trip to vic-roads for rego into trip zero. Last good byes as she heads off on her maiden trip It was a bit sad seeing her drive off up the road after all the hard work we had put in Her next short trip was up to vic-roads for registration. Funny how not even vic-roads noticed that the temporary permit was hanging upside down in the window! Here in vic registering Bessie was too easy. 1. Weighbridge docket 1040kg 2. Appointment 3. Ring vic roads and get a vin no. And stamped onto draw bar. 4. Inspection checked vin and length and lights only. 4. Was asked what the gross weight was and answered 1700kq (which is now recorded on the rego) 5. Paid money and recieved plates. No electrical or gas checks or even a look inside or underneath... Now onto writing up trip No1 – Glen Chromie

Lovely looking van ! I find it amazing how some people have to jump through so many hoops to get their van registered, from brakes to lights to tow couplings to vin numbers etc! There just seems to be no consistency even in the same state !!! I don't understand??? Anyway really glad you had no hitches!!!!

When we registered our first van at vic roads, the vin number didnt match what it said in their system so they simply changed it on their computer to match ours, checked the lights and gave me the plates after they got their money, we hope our vv registration is going to be just as easy Frank and Barb

Hi KFisher A wonderful travelogue - some very pretty windswept scenery. And birds everywhere - I'm sure your wife was nervously eyeing them off, like Tippi Hedron! Looks to be an enjoyable weekend: Mum, Dad, Monopoly, making dinner, drunken Tigers...oh that old chestnut... Cute! Seeshell

HiKam, thanks for the pictures, Cowes is a favourite place for me,in the early 60,s my grandfather built a holiday house in the street behind that van park. On the other side of the road was another van park, now filled with houses. Each school holidays we jump into pa,s 50 chev and take the 3hr trip from Dandy west to Cowes, stopping at least twice so nanna could have a cup of tea,on the side of the sth gippy hwy of course. The speed or lack of it would be at a guess 35mph, with everybody passing us, single lane both ways in those days.On rare occassions we,d travel down in dad,s 58 volkswagen, he,d be cursin if we got stuck behind a bloody caravan.I vividly remember watching old bondwoods swaying all over the road, hoping we,d actually get up enough steam in the beetle to pass one, we seldom did. Childhood memories of playing in that very same rock pool you photographed hunting for crabs, and on one case taking them home in an empty coffee jar only to have it tip over in the car at hampton park, crabs everywhere, mum yellin at dad and my sister and i upset that our crabs were gone. The caravans had such an impact on me,i,d get my dad to draw some for me, he was very talented with a pencil, i,d carry them around wishing we could own the real thing, but a vw for a tow car meant it remained a dream. A house that backed onto nanna,s had a bondwood parked under a carport, i,d spend hours staring over the fence at it. So many happy times spent at `Phillip Island, and lots on the way. Cheers Dave

Since getting back from the NATS we have been rather busy with life and I had not yet got around to sorting through the 2,500+ photos, a little overwhelmed with the task of picking out not too many to show on the forum.
So finally started the sorting process so I should have something to show for my efforts soon.

Sorry for the long delay posting the NATS and Mexican tour photos but I was a little overwhelmed every time I taught about sorting through the thousands of photos... It all started a couple of days before departure where Bessie was put in the drive way and given a good bath and filled up with the supplies for her most epic adventure with us so far. This will be Bessie's 5th trip. We headed out to wards Wedderburn one day early (for the Mexican Tour) on 19th April stopping at Kyneton for lunch after a bit of geo-caching on the way. After lunch wandered over to get some mineral water out of the pump but it was closed for business Luckily a new pump had been installed not too far away and we filled up the bottles and headed out of the parking area. On the way out it was decided that the toilets were needed and we came around and drove back into the parking area. On the way in I heard an almighty bang coming from inside Bessie. We pulled up and I looked into the windows to see what had made the noise that was clearly heard inside the car. I peered into Bessie and noticed something looked not quite right, but it took a few seconds to scan around before I noticed that the poor girl had had a wardrobe malfunction, and a little more serious than the catwalk variety. Her wardrobe door had fallen off and was sitting diagonally in the entry just behind the main door. A few not so G rated words later as I peered through the window in disbelief, I eventually took in the scene and went and surveyed the damage in greater detail. I suspect that the door flung open and ripped the screws holding the hinges right out of the 'bog' that they were screwed into. I carefully placed the wardrobe door on the bed and we continued on to Wedderburn. We decided to make our way to Wedderburn and go straight to the caravan park and check in then look for a big green shed to get a chisel and saw to effect some temporary repairs. As I drove into Wedderburn my heart sunk (no shed!) and then I blinked, we were heading out the other side of town... Not being as well traveled as some I expected it to be a little larger than it was, as a town... Oh well looks like the repairs might have to wait till later. We checked in, the staff were great and loaned me a couple of extremely blunt chisels and a saw. Luckily I had the rest and especially a fine file which brought the chisel back to being a lot sharper. The rest of that day (Which I was originally planning to relax and sit back and enjoy) was spent chiseling out the wood so that a new piece of wood could screwed from the back allowing the hinges to be screwed into this new block of wood (which I had with me ). Bang, Bang, Band for many hours. I pitied the others staying at the park a listening to this. I finally got the door rehung as it was just after dark. Not bad for a temporary repair, and it held out for the whole rest of the trip.

Thanks Kingfisher for your efforts in showing us what great times you and your lovely family have in enjoying the great outdoors! I for one love looking at your photos and also gaining knowledge on how to deal with caravan problems as they arise. Cheers Hughdeani
