Took a few photos of the Canberra campsite for the MOTLW...I think you'll all agree it looks pretty good!! ;D ;D (hopefully DonR can post them soon) There were a number of cars parked on and driving on the site for whatever reason (joggers, walkers, picnickers) so so much for all the ACT govt depts parannoia and carry on about cars on the grass. For those who do not want to "jump" a gutter to get to the sites you will see as you come down the hill past the hospice and its carpark a short turn to the left which leads to a boat ramp at the waters edge. There is a small roundabout on it as well just before the ramp. As you go around the roundabout there is a driveway on the right which gives easy acces to the campsite areas beside the "beach" IMPORTANT NOTE.... DO NOT PARK THERE IN THAT BOAT RAMP/ROUNDABOUT AREA IF YOU DON'T WANT YOUR VAN AND CAR SCRATCHED as local bus services use the roundabout to turn around in after dropping off and collecting passengers at the hospice bus stop. **(THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM TO DRIVE PAST THE TURN AND DO A U TURN, PARK UP AND FIND OUT WHERE BETH WANTS YOU TO SET UP BEFORE YOU RETURN AND USE THE DRIVEWAY)** It's about a 10/12 minute bus trip to the city from that stop for those who might wish to use the bus service. $4 for an all day pensioner ticket or $8 for an all day adult ticket jenno PS a question for Beth....are they going to mow the area before we get there? It's not too long now but with the unprecedented warm weather we are having it won't take long to be knee deep!! PPS The forecast for Tuesday morning in Canberra is a balmy -2 Celcius ;D ;D but don't panic they reckon it will warm up later in the week for thursday MOTLW kick off;)

Hi All It is MargaretsMum here again. Margaret is looking forward to her trip out to Canberra all the way from (guess where) Canberra, to meet lots of other vans. Despite being 53 years old now she hasn't grown from the 10 feet she was born with. So what's with the big trip to Canberra? Such a great idea. When us and Mr and Mrs Koala tried to set up a trip to Canberra years back there was Zilch interest. How cute to find Canberra is now the centre of the universe. I remain perplexed at the reference to "beach" in the earlier email. Maybe there is a beach on Lake BG, let us hope it is as exciting a beach as COLEDALE. (Such wonderful memories.) Thanks to the very helpful Beth Sometimes and see you all Thursday or Friday. SAFE DRIVING. xxxxx

Some photos from one of the MOTLW cavalcades, posted on behalf of Jennison:Ray and Sandra's HQ and Viscount: Bethsometimes and her Gracemur: Tooley's Buick and Valiant (with finger): HD Holden and unidentified van: Paul's homemade: Jennison's Jennison Pathfinder and Chrysler: Kylie and Chad's homemade: Marjie2's Chesney and FJ: Les and Eve's Fiesta: Greg and Marion's Wanda and Dodge: Sandra and Dennis: Possible Caravan Industries caravan: Jennison with fellow travellers: One of the tow cars: And this evening the side of Jennison's Pathfinder served as a screen for the showing of a film. This included a photo of John Jennison and his wife taken beside their Nomad caravan at Newport Beach in 1939. John Jennison was the founder of Jennison caravans and forum member Jennison's grandfather. Very appropriate that their photo should be shown on the side of one of their company's vans. Thanks for the pics Jennison. Great to see that you're having a fantastic time on the cavalcade. Don Ricardo

Some more photos from the Museum of the Long Weekend, courtesy of Jennison:Vans and cars lined up in Yass ready for the procession into Canberra: Cars and caravans as far as the eye can see! According to Jennison, forum member Lyneth has traded in her caravan on some alternative transport. Not sure how serious he is. Nice scooter though: Dusk at the campsite in Canberra last night overlooking water (Lake Burleigh Griffin I presume?): And the evening's entertainment: I'm sure there will be lots of photos of MOTLW posted after this weekend, but this gives those of us who weren't able to get there a taste. Safely home already after participating in a wonderfull week of vintage vanning with the MOTLW crowd. I would very much like to congratulate and thank Beth, Jodi and all of their many helpers and artists who worked unceasingly to make this event a truly great success. Canberra put on the most beautiful weather for the whole 3 days we were camped there as well. If Beth and co can ever find the energy to try this again I know that all involved will be lining up to sign on!! Well done and a big thankyou also to Simon for his work wth the Jenno history mini documentary as well regards jeff

A big thank you to all those that brought their terrific vintage vans and vehicles from far and wide to the Museum of the Long Weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the classic vans and seeing the time and effort that has been put in by their owners to keeping them on the road. A great event - well done.

Museum of the long weekend was a truly enjoyable event...... very well organised... in a great location... appreciated by the people of Canberra.... and it attracted a mixed collection of well presented vintage caravans, not all of them restored to original but all owned by very proud and happy people, some who traveled from Western Australia... Tasmania... South Australia... Queensland... Victoria.... New South Wales... and the Australian Capital Territory From Sydney we joined the convoy of 40 vans at Yass on Thursday morning Arriving at Grevillea Park we were directed to our designated spot alongside Lake Burley Griffin by the wonderful Jodie where we were able to enjoy some great sunsets During “happy hour” Too many caravans to show them all but as an indication of the diversity here's a few All the way from Germany All the way from Sydney.... not really my cup of tea And here is Harvey showing off some of his junk.... and somebody Else's bike And this one I was particularly pleased to see in such great restored condition by a fella called Chris who has done a few caravans for Big hArt. I sold this van to them in 2006 and they have certainly improved and looked after it. The venue was top class... they even put on a regatta for us to watch on Saturday morning At the end of the men’s eight they awarded a thing called the “Disher cup" which made us think maybe the regatta wasn't run just for us If you would like to see more of the caravans at the event I suggest you look at the YouTube footage or MOTLW Facebook siteI think Jenno and others will have more photos to post so I'll leave it to them, but I have to say how impressed everybody was with the way the team from Big hART led by Beth and Jodie worked to make this event a great success Cobber

I would like to echo Cobbers comments, we joined the convoy at Cowra and had a terrific time and really appreciated the interest from the public in our van. It is hard to estimate the number of people who inspected our van but it must have been in the hundreds over the 3 days in Canberra. At times we had people lined up waiting their turn to go inside where Judy sat to answer their questions............even cooked a few scones for them one day. As Cobber said, the Bigart team did a wonderful job but we should also mention the Cowra Caravan Park and Cowra Council who made us very welcome with a car show, BBQ and live entertainment while the people of Cowra came down to inspect our vans. Well done!!! My date scones with raspberry jam and cream cooked in our original Flavel oven. Another perfect day dawns over the 69 Franklin and 56 Buick at Grevillea Park Canberra.

This was such an extraordinary weekend. In addition to the usual enthusiasm and friendship of the vintage vanners and public, there was the added extra of the members of Big hART who were such a professional, friendly bunch. Their 'artiness' was truly inspiring, (for me especially the projections onto the vans), but also their background in helping the disadvantaged www.bighart.org. It was so nice meeting you all, truly humbling.

Hi everyone, Thanks so much for all the positive feedback, it is really appreciated and makes memories of all the hard work melt away! I really appreciate the faith people put in myself and Big hART to pull it off and we did! - with the help of all you fabulous vanners. I have just uploaded a whole lot of images to the MOTLW facebook page and they're attracting heaps of attention already - I encourage you to check them out - i'll upload a few highlights here also. If people are not facebookers or you'd like high-res pics of anything in particular or a spread of photos let me know via e-mail beth@bighart.org and I can post you a DVD. Also, Jono from the Centenary will be editing together a 15-min video about the development of the event and also Simon did some filming which he will edit together after some other projects he's finishing first. Will keep you posted on how to view these. I spoke with Bluey about making plaques for those who want them and will be in touch via e-mail to see if people would like to order as I ran out of time to sort this prior to the event! Thanks again everyone - I had a great weekend even though I was running around madly for a lot of it, the campfire singalongs, the happy faces, beautiful vans, the story telling, the moments of intimate exchange and private parties inside vans all over camp, all of it made it so worth it. We estimate there were close to 3000 visitors altogether over the weekend. Cheers! Beth (the fossicker)

G'day Beth, Can't wait to see what Bluey comes up with for a commemorative plaque (for those who don't know Bluey, he's not on the Internet ... he told me he's just an old fashion bloke) this is his rig made it himself. Please let us know what video or DVD becomes available of the event. I'd like to get hold of a copy of that story/poem Jessie ( I think ? ) recited about the life of the aboriginal girl... would that be available ? An unforgettable long weekend, did you sleep at all Cobber.

As a total newbie all I can say is WOW what a great weekend. It was nice to put faces to names. Beth and her team excelled in providing a great location, amenities & support to all the VVaners. The quality and diversity of the vans was inspiring to a couple of newbies. I can't wait for the Nats. We would like to thank one and all for accepting us into your fold and as in our vintage car movement we hope to make some life long friends in the VV. Mr & Mrs Gypsy

I too wish to thank Beth, Jodie and her extraordinary team for a wonderful "long weekend". The artists caravans were amazing especially at night and the afterhours entertainment was great It was great to catch up with old friends, I even had a swap meet with Harvey (a new diff for my '63 ute). I finally met Gypsy10 and we talked about restoring our Gypsy vans, and I kept bumping into this bloke called Koala... ;D I'm glad to hear from Beth the crowd numbers as I was amazed at having so many people peeping into my little van, here a some photos Cruisin from Yass to Canberra behind Vikki from Vintage Caravan Magazine Minus 3.5 degrees on Friday morning – welcome to Canberra in October !! 1964 Crusader A front view of Bluey’s Combo – it sounds great too!! Very nice Brown Valiant combo The beautiful Mortisha owned by Lyn Three lovely ladies outside my Gypsy The purple people eater stopped by Kit & The Fossiker And finally the “cute & cuddly” Koala havin a bit ‘o’ fun.
