Work is progressing ....when the rain stops that is.. I thought I would get it painted this weekend but have found a few more bits to bog! Can recommend auto bog...does a great job sealing cracks...sands easy and seals and shapes well!! And have reworked the earlier work on the back because the timber was cracked deeper than I thought did not take the sealer as well as I had hoped!! Another lesson learnt...more preparation..better result! Thought I would insert this pic Retro1 sent in response to my request for information on these vans! Thanks Retro! This.....is what I'm going to end up with...I hope!! ;D ;D ;D ;D Marc

Marc are you going to keep the colours original? If so remember to keep a sample of the old paint before you remove it all. Make sure you prime all surfaces well and don't forget these old vans were painted with lead based paints which can be toxic once they are turned into dust.

Thanks for the tips! ;D Now that there is nothing left to sand I do think I could have been a bit more careful with the dust. After the first weekend of intensive sanding I did feel a bit awf!! But that could have been shock...not used to it...or the fact that the whole weekend was in full sun.....the same weekend Mrs Retro forgot to slip, slop, slap and ended up looking like Rudolph for a week!!! ;D We are aiming to keep it as close to original as possible...Jane has been reminding me to keep some paint for matching.....just not sure which layer is the original!! The green and cream won't be a problem....matching the Orange has not been easy!! I have been getting some good tips from a local paint store: PRIMES PAINTS Foodland shopping centre ...Blackwood... Nice bloke with plenty of time for vintage van restorers looking for help!! All surfaces have now been "primed" with pink sealer! Ditzy would love I think! ;D My 5 year old got a bit excited until she found out it is not the top coat colour!!! ;D As far as garden gnomes go Will, you've got that one for yourself ....loosing the hair we have in common!!! 1 week to the final colour....2 weeks to its first trip away,,,,,,...........................times a tickin' ;D!!!!!

Trev, I'll take some shots and run a tape over the bunk this evening...no problem! I can't believe there is another one under restoration...there is mine plus Reidy's as well...!! ;D I often wonder if many survived the years....with 3 lasting there must be more!!!! ?? Of course the price is you have to post or send me shots of your van...... !!!! ;D ;D Soon..... Cheers, Marc

Here you go Trev, ;D all dimensions are in inches...cause thats what they were! The bunk is effectively a shelf 74 1/2 x 27" Made of ply on a frame of 6 cross pieces of 3/4" x 1 3/4" timber. .this shows the hinge system and "up wards stop" the hinge is a triangular pate 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 3 1/2" hinge is screwed into the side of the bunk with its bottom edge flush with the underneath face of the shelf frame. the bottom rear corner of the triangle is 1 3/4" in from the back edge of the shelf. The "upstop" is designed to stop the bunk at a certain point, which lines the slide bolt up (one each end)with a hole in the vans side wall......these slide bolts are what holds it front corners up!....slide bolts in to drop down to form a seat backrest. The second shot.... shows the bunk supports attached to the vans inside front wall. They are 3/4" timber ...3" x 9"..shaped for effect. As the shelf swings up, its base comes in cotact with the top of these two main supports (supports are spaced about 16" apart). this shot of the backstop attached to the side walls.. The length of this stop sets the angle of the backrest..it is 5" ...but could be more comfortable if you set it longer...try a few off cuts out.. They are fixed about 9" above the bottom bunk. You can also see the slide bolt in the top corner. In this pic of the shelf down, you can see the lip that stops the mattress sliding off...it is 3 1/2" high and finished anout 1 1/4" from the ends of the shelf...giving room to clear the up stop as you lift the shelf. It also shows the hinge! Fianal shot is a wide view... If all this has made sense you will have a picture in your head that is worth a couple of thousand more words.... if not give me a hoy! Good luck! ;D

A shot of Paintwork in progress.... We since decided that the original colours had a silver top.....but if you were to be stuck behind us on a sunny day you would soon be both blind and cursing messers Botterill and Fraser!! So a last minute change was made...even taking this photo the glare was a shocker!! Hope you had a good Easter... ;D We just got back from our first trip away.... Van towed without any problems.... ;D Well there was one "moment" when were miles from anywhere and started hearing a horrible sound from the back end......but to our relief.....the newly added safety chains had just got a "rattle up" on an undulating stretch of "road"...if you have travelled SA's Yorke Penninsula you will know the Curramulka dippers well!!! To say that I was dissaponted we had to take the van in a "not quite finished" state is an understatement. So I am only posting pics of the back end!! Ha Ha Hope to finish the little bits to be done on Saturday! This is about a km from where we stayed... If ever you want to see SA at its best...head for Innes national park..its at the toe end of the Penninsula!! If you go during any Easter you will probably see a funny old van about the place!! Drop in for a feed of fresh fish...or if you find us on the right day..... ;D ;D Dont grow tht big in WA do they Will !! More later! ;D

;D It looks like your girls are having a hard time lifting that cray .. so freeze it and send it west !! The van looks great Marc. It sure is a beautiful shape, I bet you got a few looks on your travels. Where did you get the giant cray from, out of the water or over the counter? I wouldnt like to be paying by the kilo if you payed for that baby .. you wont be taking holidays for a while .. save some for us, instead of going to London well go to S.A.and help you demolish it! Curried Crayfish not!!!! Looking forward to the ongoing adventures with Marcs Mob and the jazhow journeys.. Regards Will Caravan and Crayfish Connisseur (Im not sure which one comes first)

G'Day Will, And I was thinking your trip sounded pretty good...swap you the tail of the biggest one for it!! Either that or a day alone with your Chevy!!!! We spend most Easters chasing fish and cray ...small boat....big waves....and every now and then a monster 5 kg one turns up!! ;D A monster this big would never make to an Ausie market...but you might find one near it whilst travelling Japan!! Heres another taste,,, ;D ;D This lot in one night then nothing for the next 4 tries!! As a mate of mine always says when we pull an empty pot....."They dont cost $50 a kg because they're easy to catch,,,,," The following pick is of the van at our "secret spot"... Must say too ..the old ice chest worked a treat for the milk and cold stuff....with its new seals, and careful packing, freezing what we could, a bag of ice lasted 2 or 3 days...leaving room in the portable 3 way chescold freezer...for they cray and fish fillets...mmmm! The ice sits on a tray at the top of the ice box, and as it melts the water runs down a pipe to the outside... The local birds and wallabies soon found the drip tray was a good source of water over night! Worked out better than the old esky...no bacon swimming in the melted ice for us anymore!! The natural convection(invection??) ie heat rises so cold falls, kept everything fresh all trip! ;D Belinda and Reddo, my fridge packer / advisers would be proud! ;D (Reddo), the freezer runs outside.. as you quite rightly pointed out...we don't have a normal/modern cons like a fridge or cooker in this one!! Here's the freezer next to our van...under the bubbly...just to the right of ...oh yeah,....another cray.... ;D I have however, just picked up a gas cooker for the van from Dennis (thanks jailbarjuice)...so next trip the kids can cook the chips inside!! Can you ask for more!!! Marc

G'Day will! ;D Seem's like years.. . I've been absent for a while and it is staggering how much has been posted in the last 6 to 8 weeks !!! I've just got back from a trip to NZ...had to be there when the Aussies lost to nearly everyone in the cricket and NZ beat us in the netball...and they are still dirty about "the under arm" incident! Not much progress on the vanning home front either due to winter kids sport taking up most Satudays and Sundays....hope to get back into things soon! I'm still trying to find time to catch up with all the postings...hence this entry from work!... Great to see the membership slide past 200! ;D Sorry to take a month to realise you had noticed my abscence! Cheers mate! ;D
