Yo.. I have just spent the morning stripping back and sanding a metal sunvisor for the panelvan. Pleased with my efforts I took a run up to the spraypainters shop... he is getting stuck into the old van. I was only up there a fortnight ago and he was showing me the rust repairs and beating he had done in a few spots that he wasn't happy with..... At that stage he had the swinging panels painted on the inside.... Colour is a bit darker than the FB Panno..... its more like the beige/brown that the old HK,HT,HG Belmont utes and vans came out in. I turned up today with the visor and headed in to where the van has been sitting being worked on for the passed month or so... No sign of it ?? Found it in the spray booth... Apparently people haven't been crashing into each other as much the past few months, and that means not a lot of repair work coming in.. all good for me .. He has been working near full time on the van... At this rate I might have the car home by the end of September.... Reddo

G'day Reddo, This is looking great. Well done mate. I am about to purchase a 1 owner 1975 VW Kombi with full log book servicing from an elderly gent (84) who lives about 10 doors away from my house. Doctor wants him to hand in his licence on the 24th September, 2013. I will do a spruce up of the vehicle for my family requirements. What is the difference between sand blasting and soda blasting? Your little buddy, HALPS

hi halps sandblasting is abrasive and will always blowholes through thin metal areas plus it often leaves a certain amount of sand in those hard to clean places like sill cavities etc. it will also blow out any fillers that have been used, (which may be a good thing) but often leads to a lot more finishing than expected. sodablasting is non abrasive and uses bicarbonate of soda mixed with high pressure air and is a lot more gentle on the body parts than sandblasting. blasting soda is a material that has micro fragmentation on impact, literally exploding away surface materials without damage to the substrate. a lot less damage is caused to the body work, fillers etc are not effected by the sodablast and any residue is simply washed (dissolved) away with water which can easily be removed. the soda blasting process also leaves a protective coating on the bare steel that gives you some working time (up to 12 months) before primer is needed. there are a lot of companies who will come to your house to sodablast. geoff 'n jude

OK then... the last few posts have been a "blast"... Thanks for the info guys... I bought the van home yesterday ... made a bit of a start on the re-assembly today by fiddling with all the hardware on the lower tailgate... lot of odds and ends to go back on the car before it gets trotted out for a rego check... prep work wasn't brilliant ... but then again I did tell the beater it was going to be an every day driver.... NO.. I haven't painted 5 different panelvans... the flash gives a different shade of beige each photo I take.... Will shove it out in the sun tomorrow and try again with the camera... All good Reddo

Hi Sooty When i was negotiating a price/terms and conditions of contract ( so to speak) with the panelbeater one of the things I stipulated was that he fit I stipulated was that he trial fit and check gaps on all hanging panels before they where removed and painted. He done a pretty good job on everything else .... but... he overlooked the left guard. Neither of the guards had ever been fitted to the car since the repairs where done on em years ago. So ... he painted everything and when he fitted the left guard it sat high at the rear near the windscreen. no amount of adjusting would get it right... When he rang me to come and make the final payment I took one look at the guard and blew up at him. End result ... I had to shop for another guard. found one that needed a lower 1/4 in it . gave it to him to fit and weld in section.. check for fit .. and paint. Happier with new gurd so paid and brought the car home. Kept other guard ... can buy a new top corner rust repair section if I ever ( hope not) need to use that guard. Gunna bung the bumperettes on today and keep fiddling around the tailgates. Ran my left index finger through the wire wheel on the bench grinder last night.... ... Hey .. its been over 12 months since the floor of the "Shed of Invention" has seen blood... ;D Just like the good old days around here lately..... Thought I had lost my touch there for a while... ... and I have in my index finger.... Got another 9 to mangle so all is good. See ya Reddo

The scene...... 1964... somewhere in suburbia...... Wallace and grommet ( the apprentice) plumbing services are working on a job site with the new 1964 panno out the front.. Wallace asks young Grommet to go and bore some holes in a piece of plywood and bring it back to him... Grommet starts to ask "Where do I rest the piece of plywood when I am drill...." Wallace yells at Grommet..."Oh for god sake Gromet run along now.. theres a good boy"....... 10 mins late Grommet returns with a piece of ply with at least 12 holes drill in it as Wallace had requested".... Later that day when the two are packing up Wallace discovers what Grommet had used as a work bench to drill all those neat holes.... Grommet gets the sack on the spot and is now shoveling poop at 4.00am in the local horse stables... Here is where Grommet drilled the holes.... Yup.. that's right.. all over the tailgate of the new 1964 holden panelvan... Fast forward 49 years to the shed of invention and I am found toiling away with the shed gnomes doing a make over on young Grommets handywork.... hmmmm.. what ta do... thinkity think.. got it... I have some aluminium left over from the " Not Everyones Cuppa Tea" Tear drop project 2 hours later and grommets handywork is no more... Individual pieces of aluminium stuck down between raised sections with liquid nails....wasn't I lucky the manler didn't drill holes in the raised sections..... So .. at the end of the day I have left the stuck on bits with a few weights holding them down to ensure adhesion... Arent I lucky I have a fetish for collecting towbar goosenecks.... I knew they would come in handy one day.. ;D ;D ;D Cheers Reddo

Yo.... Most of the chrome back on the outside. Bonnet, doors and tailgate gaps adjusted to the best of my ability. Poor old van had been shunted around a wrecking yard by another vehicle that simply ploughed into the front guards to move it .. first the left ,,, then the right. I straightened most of the radiator support and inner guards before I took it to the beaters. Always knew it was going to be difficult getting things right.. especially after the beater didn't spend much time on checking gaps etc after repairing / welding lower 1/4s in etc.... I guess that's my fault for saying "its just going to be an everyday driver" Not to worry... its coming together and should get close to being sorted some time in January... been rubbing the dash down and trying to sort the wiring out... Can get all the front and back parking lights and number plate light working on the first position on the light switch... pull it out to the second position... I loose all the parking and number plate lights and the headlights work perfectly ... Tried another switch... no difference.. walked away and messed about with the motorbikes for the rest of the arvo. Gunna take the Holden manual to work and blow the wiring diagram up to A3 on the photocopier so I can read the bloody thing without my eyes bleeding Cheers fa now Reddontmesswithwires

Hey Blossom, I reckon you've got your tail lights and parkers on the park terminal , which will go out on the headlight position.....find the right tailight terminal and split the lights up, you should get a result. ciao,c

Low voltage Electrizzitee Why cant cars have 415V so ya get a good fizz at the connections... sorta let emselves "weld" emselves together when a fault occurs.. rather than mamby pambying around with dim old 12 volt. Crud and bad earths...is the enemy... they must be conquered .. Cleaned up the 8 wire flat plug that pushes on to the light switch terminals. Had surface rust in the female plug section....don't know how moisture would have got to the switch.. its a fair way from any windscreen leaks etc.. Got all lights working .... then moved on to the indicators... A dud blinker can and a hot join which had caused the 3 pin indicator can plug to partially melt .... then bad earths on the two rear lights...and right front Have got the front indicators winking at me ... got to pull the rear lights out and make up separate earths to the body to ensure good earths. BLOSSOM..... ... You just wait . and.. with a name like Redman ya can expect a bit of spark, smoke and flame on the odd occasion..... you can also expect "Odd" as well. ;D ;D ;D Reddo

Well... Its been a Looooonnnnggggg year... what with building the Td and juggling work on the Panelvan it seems like have spent most of my spare hours in the shed bashing away at things... But they say persistence and toil pays off , Got the TD finshed to a point where I can start enjoying it.. still has 12v and 240 v lighting to wire up... but it is useable as is... so batted on with the van and now have the windscreen in... interior only needs door trims and a bit of a spruce up in the back. Fitted the visor and mirrors yesterday.... so... the suspence got too much today.... gave its squirt up and down the street and took it down the back yard for a few pix... Just couldn't help but introduce it to its tag a long mate... ;D I have all the gear to do the door trims. Laser cut replicas from Better Rubber in QLD for $28 ea. Couple of metres of brown Vinyl $35. Flat sheet stuff cant be that difficult to trim up... Even dug out the jewel in the crown and fitted it.... A genuine N.O.S 1980s Kmart Terry Towelling seat cover( complete with fitting instructions 1. stretch cover over top half of bench seat 2. stretch cover over bottom half of bench seat.... ... wooda been stuffed without that little lot aye.. ;D ;D) I picked it up for $5 at Kempsey swap a while back. Once its registered I can play around with other odds and sods like dual batteries.....sports steering wheel ... 5 speed... big block Chev.....ummmmmmmmmm... I'll get back to ya when shes registered... Hoping ta give it a whoopin to Golburn swap ... 19th Jan Reddo... I'm stoked....

Hey Reddo . Panno's looking great. Lurve the Honey Beige colour. It and the tear drop look like they were made for each other!! Can't wait to see'em in the flesh!
ps While at the Golburn Swap, why dontcha keep ya eye out for a set of widened ht /k/g 14" steelies ? Paint 'em body colour with caps and trim rings.........purrfect IMO.......don't get me wrong....existing mags are looking the goods too.... Cheers Sutcac.
