I am purchasing a 63 model car which has no seatbelts. How do I go about buying some that suit the car but that are safe for my family? They have to be tan or beige too as black will not match. Wreckers, rare spares? I really have no idea.

HI Shesgotthelook, With my past experience with restoring and modifying cars, I have found wrecking yards a very good source for parts of this nature. If you try to stay with the same manufacturer there is a good chance you can match up colour and size to suit your vehicle. Things to watch out for are damage (cuts, sun or chemical). It would be a good idea to contact the local authority in regards to engineering if there aren't already fixing points. I hope this is of some help Starstuck

Hi,
I support Kaybee with that. I've bought several sets from Neil thru my upholsterer. One set about 20 years back I think, the other around 2000 for my jailbar. Custom sized & coloured.
Both sets have functioned perfectly, & still look as good as new
I also remember fitting seatbelts to my parents new EJ Holden in 64. Had to drill thru the door pillar, & floor to fit them, as the EJ had no provision for belts. Neither have any of my early cars. So if you retrofit seat belts where they never were, make sure you buy & instal properly the fitting kit for your new belts.
Inertia reel belts as currently used are sometimes a considerable job to fit, especially in the door pillars. They need a secure anchor point top & bottom. Mostly a couple of threaded bungs are welded into the pillars. Legally this requires engineers certification.
But if you instal the old style lap/sash belts, which are period correct for a 63 car, you only need a thru bolt in the pillar, & backing plates fitted to the floor mountings. Much easier to instal at home,
Reliable aftermarket belt suppliers can supply fitting kits & instructions.
Dont chase the cheap crap, buy good quality. Make sure they have an Australian Standard number & label sewn onto them.
Your life depends on your seat belt
If a seatbelt has been used in a collision, it is meant to be replaced. I believe that is written in the Australian Standard. ( but if its not, rest assured someone will come on line to correct me. Thats the way of a Forum)
So DONT buy from wreckers. Seat belts are meant to save lives.

I was under the impression it's actually illegal to sell/buy second hand seatbelts because if they were being used when the car crashed they have to be replaced, even for reasonably small collisions....
If someone is trying to sell you some I'd be a bit suspicious....

Unfortunately, I do not believe you can buy a period style buckle that complies with Australian standards. I have young children and when it comes to seatbelts, I wouldn't trust anything old or second hand. Hemco (in Ballarat) can supply a free set of webbing colour samples and have a full price list on their website: www.hemco.com.au/seatbelts.htmlI actually had my seatbelts supplied and fitted by Jamieson Auto Fit (in Sunshine), because I wasn't completely confident about the suitability of my existing anchor points. Turns out, the anchor points were OK - so I could have fitted the Hemco belts myself.

I second Hemco, we use them for work and I have a set of custom made green ones on my car as well. Very happy with the quality and options available in stalk type/length and belt length/colour/mounting style. Pretty sure they offer mounting kits for cars that never had them as well.

I prefered to buy mine for my Kombi elsewhere (from an online VW parts supplier) because they met the Ausie standard.... and I knew they would fit my Bus. Even if it cost me a little more... Especially since I had a little bingle (face planted a 4wd that pulled across in front of us) before that I was thinking of keeping them... Vanessa and Abby

Just my 2 bobs worth here... The belts ..( weather they be ebay bargains( forget it) or ..from The bloke that Kaybee or JBJ recommends. are only as good as the fixing points. aka.. the weakest link. In NSw you need to have 6 sq inches of fixing plate uner the floor or in the dor pillar to e legal and pasas an enginn=eers inspection.. This can be 2"X 3 under the floor ( or any combo that comes up with 6 sq inches) "or 1"X 6 "in a door ( B ) Pillar.if it needs to be that thin I was always of he opinion that if you where using retractable belts you had to use the stiff wire / stand up style floor mount belt bases between the seats . I was told by a NSW engineer that "floppy"centre mounts are OK with retractables when i went to get Will and Lyns 1954 F100 past for Reg in NSW . Just a bit of extra info to think about when considering fitment of belts in an old car in NSW. Oh Yeah.. if re registering an old car in NSW that has had belts fitted and are no longer in the car you will be told to refit them. My stock 1956 FJ ute has never had belts .. it feels "naked "sitting in there driving without belts...It actually hieghts your driving awareness / vunerability I think it was around 1965 that belts became standard fitment in cars I am probably wrong on all counts .. but heck.. i have given food for thought... and ... if that saves one life .. well then.. Regards Reddo

We did end up getting them made as recommended. It was very expensive & they don't look that great. The stitching looks like I did it & the buckles are ugly black & red plastic on brown webbing. A few days after getting them I was at an 'All Holden day' where folks were selling reproduction? ones that looked so much better.

Where did you get them done.....? The custom made ones that I have seen have all been better than that, and if the stitching looks like you did it... that doesn't sound all that safe to me.
Ugly black and red plastic is unfortunately the norm....!
Were te reproduction ones Australian made/made to Australian standards? The seatbelts that my boyfriend is, at this momet actually, installing in my Kombi are made in Victoria, and very professional looking.... the same company even custom makes diferent coloured ones. And they were not very expensive, the cost me $105.... for red. Black ones would have been cheaper....!
