I was doin about 40 mph, on my way to a club suasage sizzle fund raiser at Bunnings this morning so had it dragged back home where I got into the other car (that's why we have more than one) and took off in the sedan, turned up a couple of hours late but still had a good day, just need to sort it out now, plenty of oil and water so suspect that the oil pump has stopped pumping so need to find out why and what has welded itself together.

Just a quick update on my engine woes, Thursday night, got home from work and began disconnecting wires, linkages and hoses, then had a thought so dropped a cup full of Diesel in each pot and left it for the night, Friday, disconnect the rest of the bits and rip the engine out, today pull gearbox off then grab "BIG" screw driver and work the ring gear levering against one of the gearbox locating dowels and it moves ever so slightly with the unmistakable sqeak that you get with tight metal parts , so how do you make squeaky metal not squeaky throw a cup full of oil in each pot then leave, come back an hour or so later and try again, this time it moves without the squeak , and now it goes round and round ;D so with a little luck on my side it may not be as badly damaged as I had first thought, stay tuned, updates as they come to hand.

Well took the motor down to my mates place today and did the big strip down. What did we find? Well to begin with not much as we worked from the top down, once we tipped it on it’s head and began on the bottom end all became clear crank, bearings and maybe even con rods will need replacing, we also found one broken ring not sure how this happened though, fortunately all cylinders are good as are the cam journals and lifters. Much discussion takes place as what may have gone wrong, everything points to oil pump, nothing loose or missing, pull apart no undue wear or damage to pump gears, pressure relief valve fine, mate now frustrated and wanders off to do something else while he gives it more thought, meanwhile I return to oil pump and decide to remove the gear that is attached to the drive shaft for a better look, pull drive shaft out and gear looks fine but what’s this I see at the top of the drive shaft? Looks to me that something has been spinning so I dig around in the box of bits and locate the dizzy and guess what, the bottom of the dizzy shaft is a perfect match for the wear on the top of the oil pump drive shaft, so what happened? If you recall I had and earlier problem where my engine wouldn't rev you may remember that while trying to fix this problem we changed dizzies, the replacement one had the retaining collar mounted to low on the shaft thus not allowing the drive to mesh fully with the oil pump, this is one thing we didn’t even think to look at because we were so preoccupied with the other problem and ultimately lead to the failure of the oil pressure, when looking more closely it appears that the drive was engaged by only about 1 mm so it was doomed to failure it was only a matter of time.

UPDATE!! Rang crank man Friday arvo, Crack test? GOOD, Straight? Yes, oilways cleaned and preped, so how long? not to sure but it's being loaded into the machine for grinding, Okay will ring Wednesday , mate has located replacement set of Conrods so it looks like we are on track for getting it back on the road soon

Picked up my bits and pieces today for rebuild No2, the crank finished up with the Mains + 010" and the Big ends +020' , conrods machined to matched and a new set of bearings to suit, I will however be fitting a pressure gauge this time round, not to fussed about how it may look (new pressure gauge) but I think I have a solution to that

Been a while but spent the day over at my mates house, turned up to find his son in-law busy washing four engine blocks, two for himself one for the inlaw and mine, I set to work straight away washing all my residual bits and pieces while the other two do other things, long stroy short, four engines to build 3 blokes and a whole day to do it in, by the time 5.00pm rolls round we have a grand total of no engines finished, am hoping to have mine finished Tuesday evening when I call in on my way home so fingers crossed I may have the heart back in my Ute soon.

Hi Humpyboy.. I hope you wrapped the motor up in plastic good and tight before you went home... Last thing ya need is those pesty engine gremlins making a nest inside your motor again Hope it all comes together for you OK mate. Nothing worse than having your favourite ride off the road. Regards Reddo

Thanks for your comments Sandy and no you can't have it in your shed cos it's in mine ok ;D I had my sedan on display today at the local AG show but came home with a bit of time to spare so got out in the shed and did this. Back where it belongs, tomorrow I will get back out there and start hooking up all the bits and pieces and get it ready to turn over.

Well it lives again, 20lb on the gauge at idle and up to 38lb on the road, gotta be happy with that now just have to find out why the genny light is on and what is making an awfull scrapping noise which comes and goes as you drive along.

Okay pulled the genny off today and put it back on cos it all looked fine light now off go figure, problem I have now is with the battery at full charge it wont crank enough to start add another battery with jump leads nothing try a jumppack nothing, get the work car and jump leads and it starts WTF, I have 13 volts at the starter 13 volts at earth but it wont crank, the starter was rebuilt just before I blew the motor up it has a 12 volt solenoid and a 6 volt armature, any ideas?

Why mix the 6v armature and a 12 v solenoid?......reckon your problem may well be there....a 6v arm. won't have the correct resistance for prolonged use on 12 volt, it's going to be a bit like an internal short to earth with the contacts in the solenoid being expected to carry more current than they are capable of.....so they're probably fried. Easy test, borrow a known working starter and swap it over to see what happens. If it all works OK,you know where to look. If it's still R.S., first check all the battery leads and make sure the Earth circuit is complete ( I've seen early Holdens earthing through the choke cable and even the accelerator linkages when blokes forget to fit the earth strap from the subframe to the gearbox : , if all that proves to be OK, try bridging the small solenoid terminal directly to the large Positive stud on the solenoid where the Batt. lead goes. If that makes it start, then you better look at the ign. and start button for voltage drop under load......cheers, Col. PS, it's likely your Gennie just need to be Polarised, sometimes they lose Polarity when they're out of use, usually for a long time though.

Hi Col, I'm not overly concerned with the mix on the starter as the Auto Elec that put it together told me that Ford did exactly the same thing when they went to the Cross flow motor, spose to give the starter more torque besides it works fine when I jump off the work car, I have the neg side of battery bolted straight to the motor as I had it from the start, will try and short the ignition wire direct to the main led on the starter tomorrow night.
