Ok Geoff & Jude, it's approaching 6 months since there was any mention about the topless JFK batmobile?
Have you had the minor defects touched up? Any top secret things going on? Were you planning on surprising us all with this 300hp beast? Come on guys........give us something!
Cheers Adam

hi adam
absolutely no different to the day i got it home.
much to the dissapointment of many others, i haven't been inspired to do anything to it yet.
as they say, it won't happen overnight - but it will happen.

My god, how did I miss this post.
I know that i'm now up in QLD and that life has been exceptionally busy over the last year, but I can't believe I missed it.
Lincoln Continental - sweet.
Congrats Geoff and Jude - it looks great.

hi all
the poor old lincoln sat in the garage for over a year before i got interested in it enough to start doing something with it.
brother alan (marvin) and i have been working most fridays on it for a while to get it ready for rego (hopefully in march or april).
boy, what a task it's been and continues to be.
the electrical system is so complicated.
add to that a huge number of cut, by-passed, burned out, abraded or rat eaten wires plus faulty relays and limit switches, it's taken us over 120 man hours just to get the convertible top and the electric windows to work the way they should.
that included replacing all the convertible top cylinders, the boot lid cylinders, all the hydraulic hoses and a new hydraulic pump.
we're working in two areas now, trying to get the vacuum door lock system and the vacuum heater control system working (almost as complicated as the electrical system) and dismantling the dash to replace all the woodgrain panels that are totally rat#hit.
![[image] [image]](http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o99/jubbard/DSC00211.jpg)
![[image] [image]](http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o99/jubbard/DSC00210.jpg)
the more we pull apart, the more problems and bodgy fixes we're finding.
costs are beginning to blow out a bit but still less than i'd told judy it would take to get on the road when we were first looking at it.
fortunately, the body doesn't need any real work done on it, so that's one good thing (maybe the only one).
with a bit of luck, it'll be ready to take up to munmorah???????

hi all
thought we'd give an update on how the conti is progressing.
after many hours in the garage, alan (marvin) and i have finally got the car to a stage where it's almost ready for a roadworthy check and registration.
all the electrics are now working, thanks to alan's analytical mind - the electric windows and convertible top are working correctly - the rear windows now drop down about 2" to clear the window seals when you press the door buttons - something that commonly doesn't work very often on a lot of these models.
the hydraulic wipers now operate and the vacuum/electric window washers work - the vacuum system operates the hydraulic wiper motor to give 3 wipes when the electric washer button is pressed.
we finally got the vacuum door locks to work correctly last week.
we've had the dash pads recovered and we've replaced all the woodwork on the dash and glovebox (used tasmanian ash veneer).
all the instruments are functioning correctly except for the radio which needs to be sent away to be re-co'ed.
i've got to say that in all the years i've been working on old cars, i've never worked on one that is so complicated and sophisticated as the continental - lincoln wanted them to be the best in the world at the time and they certainly put a lot into them to win that status.
pretty happy with the result though.
here's a couple of pics of the dash for you to drool over - pretty cool hey.

Geoff 'n Jude,
Looks good but tell you what.... don't either of you drive it without the other riding shotgun, I see big problems with young sheilas chasing Geoff and Sugar daddies chasing Jude.
I know it's been a big job getting those electrics in order so................. well done
Good to have a smart brother ...aye ?

Going well Geoff - I can imagine what those electrics would have been like to fault find after so many years of dodgy fixes.

what a feat to sort it all out ......I would've spat the chewy for sure ...........well done guys for persisting
....the dash is excessive to say the least, but we wouldn't expect anything less from early sixties US of A cars !

hi all
had a bit of a "yahoo" moment today.
i've been waiting 3 weeks for a day where rain was not predicted to take the continental up to the local muffler place to have a new exhaust fitted, so today i took it out for a road test around home to see how it went before i take it up for the exhaust tomorrow (after 4 cancellations).
i've got to say that i was pretty happy with the way it went.
no rattles, no squeaks (although the holes in the exhaust made it sound like a race car) and it rode "as smooth as".
how could i describe the ride - smooth and wallowing - kinda like driving an ocean liner i think - certainly no sports car, especially with cross ply tyres - but it was big and impressive to drive, and definitely gets a lot of second looks as it "lumbers along the road".
if the weather holds tomorrow it'll get the new exhaust (quiet as a mouse is what i've asked for) and then up to the mechanic who did the engine in the vicky for a roadworthy test.
really looking forward to having it registered so we can have the new rag top fitted, then go for a bit of a cruise and really test it out.

Hi Geoff and Jude
Your description is right on the money. That's the patented "Rock and Roll" suspension - riding in my friend's Impala to high school was just the same (though the car wasn't vintage then, just an old banger!). Turn a corner, and we'd all slowly slide across the bench seat into the far door in a tangle - no seatbelt laws in the US.
As he used to say, "you don't park it, you dock it" and after long road trips you needed to get your land legs back.
Your Lincoln is a real head turner - enjoy all the fine weather and the wind in your hair!
Cheers Seeshell

hi ya reddo
thanks for the kind words.
now about that race.
i'm prepared to give you a bit of a go against the conti with the panno, but only under one condition.
NO CORNERS
it's got the grunt to get up a go but for some reason, when we come to a corner sharper than about 5 degrees, it doesn't seem to like it.
maybe it's hard trying to divert 2.5 tons from a straight line or maybe it's just the good old (new) cross ply tyres.
either way, that's the deal.
i'll give you an advantage to make it fair though - you go empty and i'll have the ritz on the back.
see you at the strip.
