hi all
we're looking at putting together another meander that will finish at the v.v. nationals in mildura in 2010 and have started this post to find out the number of members who might be interested in joining the trip.
at this point, the agenda is only a suggestion, but it has been arranged so that anyone interested in looking at the vintage collections at corowa and tocumwal has time to do that.
here's the initial suggestion.
meet at mittagong the first night
day 1 - mittagong to coolac - 243km day 2 - coolac to albury - 202km (445) day 3 - albury to tocumwal - 151km (596) day 4 - stay at tocumwal (this allows time to visit museums and have a bit of a rest) day 5 - tocumwal to echuca - 121km (717) day 6 - echuca to swan hill - 156km (873) day 7 - swan hill to mildura - 221km (1094)
the rest day has been added because the "meander to the mount" last year showed that driving and only stopping overnight for 6 days was a bit taxing for most of us.
if you are interested in joining us on the complete tour or any parts of the tour please reply on THIS THREAD not the 2010 Vintage Caravan Nationals thread.
we also thought that on this meander, we might stay overnight at a couple of "free camps" instead of using van parks each night. let us know what you think!

;D ;D ;D Onya Geoff and jude.. ;D I am really glad that you guys have picked up the batton and ran with this trip. Cant thinkl of 2 better people to head the wagon train across the prarie. It makes good sense to travel in numbers and do "easy days" with a day off along the way to just sit back and soak up the giant redgums and watch the murray lazily makes its way west. Unfortunately i have been saddled with a whole new breed ( university grads) at work that think that they are gunna change the world.... unfortunately there is a few in positions above me and they think that i should spend more time at work in a stinking office than gadding about the countryside. Most are in thier late 20s and unfortunately i cant put old heads on young shoulders.... So..." no more wil i go waltzing my matilda "..... Good luck with the meander and i pray for cooler weather than last years extremes on the way to the nationals. May your cylinder head gasket stay put and your spinnakers full. Reddo

G'day Geffo and Judeo Well..... I'm with you on this run. I particularly like the idea of free camps.... not because they're free but because they're the best. When we went “around the block” the free camps, especially if they were “bush camps”, are the ones we remember best. Caravan Parks are......... caravan parks Should not be hard to find camp sites for two Vintage Caravans aye? Cobber.

good on ya cobber
even if it's only the 2 of us we'll have a good 'old' time getting down there.
to answer centura-quest's question, the nationals start on the 10th may so if it's a 7 day trip the first night in mittagong will be monday 3rd (i expect).
it's all still a bit previous so things might change a tad by then.
might even be worthwile leaving on the weekend and having a couple more rest days along the way.

Hey G & J,
We would probably meet up at Albury and tag along from there.
I think stopping at free camps is a good idea but you would have to arrive fairly early, me thinks you are going to have more than just a couple of other vans following you and Cobber!
Thanks for the input, much appreciated.
Cheers, Leigh & Karon.

G'day, I may be in it from Echuca also, like Impala I'm coming from south gippsland. Closer to the time I will see what 'Goingrey' is up to as he might like to travel in a convoy Plus he might need a hand to push his FC (or i might need a hand to push my HJ!) Cheers, yellowuki

Gedday Yellowuki/ Impala, Sounds like we may have ourselves a convoy I`ll talk to gristy coz I reckon he`ll be in as well. Dunno `bout pushin the FC though... with a bit of luck I`ll have the Wayfarer registered and it will need more than the 70 grey horses available in the FC. I will apply for leave tommorrow. Chow, Goingrey

Dear Geoff & Jude, This is the first time that I have seen this post, but am glad that I found it. At present, I am planning on going to Mildura so the Meander down the Murray sounds like the way to go. Therefore please add me into the mix. Kind regards Di

hi all i spoke to spyder today and he asked if the "meander down the murray" included a stop-over at the steam rally at lake goldsmith in victoria on 1-2 may next year. i had a look at the 'agenda' and although it adds a few more days to the trip, i decided to re-organise the meander to include the rally. so here it is: meet at camden caravan park (the one humpty talked about) on saturday april 24. april 25 - camden to coolac - 316km. april 26 - coolac to albury - 211km (527km). april 27 - albury to tocumwal - 151km (678km). april 28 - stay at tocumwal (this allows time to visit museums and have a bit of a rest). april 29 - tocumwal to echuca - 120km (798km). april 30 - echuca to lake goldsmith steam rally - 262km (1060km). stay at the steam rally may 1 (saturday) and may 2 (sunday). may 3 to may 8 - back to the murray via echuca and amble along the murray freecamping until we arrive at mildura on sunday may 9 - 638km over 7 days (1698km). what we do and where we stay on this last leg would be decided each day (after looking in the camps 5 book for the next free camp). 16 days touring (from april 24 to may 9) to get to the nationals, then 6 days in mildura (may 10 to may 15). so who's said they're coming so far: us cobber spyder 54homemade jennison mustangpal then some mexicans said they might join us along the way, namely: impala sportsman1 yellowuki goingrey gristy marjie2 so that's about it for now. once the numbers are a bit more solid, i'll book caravan parks for the first leg from camden to the lake. the second leg from the lake to mildura is planned to be all 'freecamping along the murray', hopefully with a shower from time to time. so who's in and who's out, let me know on this thread not the 2010 nationals thread. oops! almost forgot to include the link to the steam rally on trodlers website. can't even think about the return trip right now, my head hurts. (anyway, might leave that up to the nrma). geoff ps. if this new plan isn't suitable we can revert to the original plan (at the start of this thread).

As much as I would like to, I am unsure if I can sqeeze three weeks leave(nearly 4 by the time I travel back home) for the revised meander as I am having a couple of weeks off over christmas . Unfortunately for me the original timings are probably more achievable for my situation work and homewise - don't let me be a damper to anyones plans though, it sounds/looks like a great idea jennison

G'day Geoff 'n Jude, We are still up for this leisurely meander along the Murray to the Lake Goldsmith steam rally, and then onto the third Vintage caravans.com national rally at Mildura. I can understand the average hard working tax payer might have trouble getting out of the yoke for that extended length of time but ........................................................... who cares (Well, you can't have lots of money AND lots of free time) Cobber.

Hi Geoff n Jude,
I'm a bit like Jennison - I can't take enough time off work to do the whole meander. Sadly, I can't manage Lake Goldsmith either, but I'm thinking that maybe I could link up with you on the Friday or Saturday before Mildura, depending on where you plan to be at that point.
And just to clarify - I presume that the free parks you mention don't have electricity?? If not, I'll have to work out some logistics - our old van was built before they fitted gas. I know...maybe I could bring a nice loud generator... Yes, yes, I know - bad idea!!

don and jeff et al.
this meander is going to be a lot more casual after we leave 'the lake' than the mt. gambier meander.
a mobile phone call will let you know where we're headed on any given day so it'll be easy (?) to meet up.

Hope to catch up with a few VVers . Steve

Hi Everone
The meander down the Murray sounds great , unfortunately I'm unable to go along. further to "Jennison's " comments on time restraints, maybe between you all , some follow the original itenerary whilst others follow the revised itenerary. Just a thought that may satisfy individual requirements as to time available.
regards
