Hi All
When we caught up with Mr and Mrs Kaybee some weeks ago they had a lovely idea of arranging a Victorian weekend away - it's true we don't do it enough down south! They mentioned a place to stay in Drouin which might be the oldest van park in Australia – the Glen Cromie Caravan Park. I thought I would have a crack at arranging a time away for anyone interested, but I’ve had a little trouble locating the planned events thread for 2013 for Victoria.
I’ve made a few guesses:
If I’ve overlooked something let me know.
Based on what I could find and guess, it seemed reasonable to try for something in September – slightly better weather (though it can be rainy!), not too close to other events. Having looked at what is available, and what might also be going on in the area which might be of interest, I propose Father’s Day weekend 2013 (Friday 30th August through Monday 2 September).
If you are interested in joining in on the VIC Weekend Away, could you reply to this thread and indicate how many people and what days you want to be there (see dates below)?
DETAILS of the Vic Weekend Away
Location: Glen Cromie Caravan Park – 1:10h from Melbourne CBD
Address: 850 Main Neerim Road, Drouin West, VIC
Proposed Dates: Friday 30 August through Monday September 2 (weekend only 31 August/1 September). Avoids school holidays.
Easily accessed from the Monash Freeway. 35 acres of secluded valley filled with gum trees and ferms. Walking tracks, and the Tarago River running through it. There is a swimming hole. Fires are allowed in the drums and pits, and dogs are allowed.

Fees: Powered sites are $30-$35.
Local Attractions held on the Proposed Weekend:
On Your Doorstep: Longwarry Market – Bennet Street
15 minutes away from park. Crafts, fresh food, trash and treasure, first Sunday of every month from 8am – 1pm.
A Short Jaunt: Old Gippstown - Moe
Closer to the park, at Moe, is a heritage township which is host to a Fathers’ Day Car Show featuring an abundance of hot rods, classics and muscle cars which might be a nice diversion. This year Father’s Day is on Sunday, September 1.
30 min by highway, 45 minute scenic drive from park. Open 7am-5pm. High Tea available. $7 entry fee. Pets permitted on leashes.
A complete Historical Township filled with authentic buildings and décor, renowned for its Coach house which contains one of Victoria’s best collections of horse-drawn vehicles. There is also a large variety of agricultural and industrial machinery ranging from horse drawn, steam-driven or manually operated, and the blacksmiths forge, in which many were manufactured. The general store and dressmaking shop contain displays of original implements used around the home in the 1850s.
Further Afield: Walhalla
A bit over an hour and fifteen minutes from the park is Walhalla which was a very rich goldrush town, and has some nice attractions if you’re staying on, or just wanting something else to do rather than laying about through the weekend! There is a trail walk along the old tramline, as well as an old town to explore. Specific attractions include:
Walhalla Township
Full of old buildings and shops to explore. Available at all times.
Walhalla Goldfields Railway
Tickets are $20 return for a one-hour journey on the scenic railway originally completed in 1910.
Trains run at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays in September and October. A detailed map of the journey can be found here.

Walhalla Ghost Tours
Runs each Saturday Night. $25 per adult. 7:30 pm start time – runs 2 hours. Leaves from Walhalla Corner Store. Tickets can be purchased online or from the corner stores prior to 4pm on the day of the tour (subject to availability).
