Well I've had a couple of good productive days this weekend have got most of the painting completed also did some staining and a little varnishing, the varnished items now need to dry so I can give them a light sand before another coat or two which I will be able to do during the week after work, I also fitted an overhead light to the hatch and have also got my draw pulls so I'm nearly there just a few little fiddle bits here and there and then I will make up the new drawbar (just to safe)

Still tinkering in the shed, fitted clips to hold windows shut, a bit more of a tidy up in the kitchen area and added a little something extra, what do all think?

Noice I say.

Am taking him for a little road trip to work Friday to have a couple of vintage struts fitted to rear hatch, so a big day for STU with his first unofficial outing, gives me a chance to give him a shake down and see how he travels and what may fall off ;D

Well I took STU to work with me on friday and he behaved himself really well, didn't even know he was there behind me, little man came out and has fitted the upper brackets and supplied me with a pair of struts he tells me will do the job but I need to get out there and find a secure way of fitting the lower brackets :-/ don't fancy cutting big holes to fit mounting blocks to screw into so will have to take some time and give it some thought.

Cowra time is nearing Soooo thought it was time to give STU a test sleep :D, dragged him out onto the drive yesterday (cos there wont be a shed at Cowra) and settled in around 12.30, first thing I noticed was how challenging it is getting undressed but have put that down to my portly frame or in good aussie slang my fat guts, only smacked my knees twice on the cupboards so should get used to that, other than that I slept quite well, spend most of yesterday sorting things to take and organizing some sort of shelter for the rear of STU, I had some old tarps and tent flys around the place so went throught it all and came up with a roof and two walls so at least I will have some sort of shelter, will one day try to find an old Auto tent I can use instead, see you all in Cowra.

tonoos here humpyboy,
I am only new at this but found your tear drop restoration fascinating. Is looking at buying one from a Queensland company for $8,000:00. I don't know whether it was new or second hand. If you restored yours for more than this, I think I would look to buy new, if it is new. If it is second-hand I don't think I would be game enough or able to restor it. Great project. Is Cowra on every year? If so, I would hope to get there one year. Regards tonoos. email.tonyharris@gmail.com

I'm not really one for talking money/costs on an open forum but will say that I think I would have got change out of $8000.
Cowra is not an annual event, this year it was selected for the Vintage Caravan Nationals which happens once every two years and is held in a different location which is decided on by our moderating team, 2014 has not yet been discussed by the team but we will be told in due coarse.

When I was first looking for a van I seriously considered a new teardrop.... $8,000 must be seccond hand (at least) as everything I looked at was about $10,000 for the empty shell and at least another $2,000 on top of that if you wanted the bare basics to use it for camping.... no fridge or gas stove, sink, watertank etc, just a bed and simple cupbaords.

Vanessa

PS. None of them were half as cool as Stu anyway ;D ;D

There was a chap in Brissy making Teardrop with a starting price of $8000 for just the shell and you fit it out yourself. Don't know if he's still around, cos he used to import those 3 wheeled bikes with VW motors to tow his Teardrop. Spoke to him in Nanango once, several years ago, and they were a great looking combo. From memory, his name was Reiner, and he had a website too.

G'day Derk, Ray,Vanessa and Tony,

I'm not talking NEW teardrops here you understand because.... the bloke you mentioned Ray, apart from his website also hosts a
yahoo Groups site where he actually encourages and gives advice to people who want to build their own teardrop..... sounds like a pretty nice bloke aye?
I have, on a couple of occasions, to people who have mistakenly come on our forum wanting to build new teardrops suggested they look at Reiners sites ::)

I expect if somebody wanted to build a fair dinkum genuine REPLICA teardrop to conform with this forums guidelines he would probably help out there also (if there was a particular problem that couldn't be sorted out right here....... most unlikely aye Derk ;))

Cobber.

Yes you are probably right there cobber, I'm sure there is enough knowledge on this forum to complete a build from scratch if that was the way you wanted to go, I am actually a member of Reiner's teardrop group and have also visited him last time time I was up north, a very pleasent gentleman and very free with info relating to teardrops but having said that I have found the group to be a little bit more focused on NEW builds rather than restorations as we do but hey that's just me.

Just a quick update on my progress, have decided not to post pics, if you wanna see it come to Cowra ;)have fitted my bench top with a step down section under the water tank so that I will be able to get a pot or kettle under it for filling ;) had enough of my special formica/laminex left over to fit a splash back to match the bench top :D

Sorry for the late reply and pics of my Kitchen but then better late than never, since getting back from Cowra I've been flat out with all the things I had put off during the rebuild of STU.
